Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charts presented give the compressive buckling coefficients for a single-truss-core and a double-truss-core sandwich plate. These charts cover a wide range of sandwich proportions and may be used for sandwiches with unequal faces. They apply to inplane compressive loads acting parallel or perpendicular to the core direction or for various combinations of these loads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made to determine the probable causes of deterioration of each of several adhesives in bonds to stainless steel at temperatures from 400 to 550 degrees F. Prellminary studies of aluminum surfaces on which ions of metals used in staLnless steel were introduced showed that iron was probably catalyzing a thermal deterioration of the adhesive. The resistance of FPL-878 adhesive to thermal deterioration at 550 degrees F on steel was improved signiffcantly by treating the steel surface to be bonded with either zinc or cerium naphthenate and firing at 1,200 degrees F. The addition of manganese dioxide to the adhesive also increased its resistance to thermal deterioration. A study of the thermal-aging properties of five different chemical types of adhesives on stainless steel and alumina revealed that a phenol-nitrile rubber adhesive was superior to a phenol-epoxy adhesive on steel, but this order was reversed on alumina. These and other observations indicated probable specific relationships among the chemical structure of the adhesive, the metal adherend, and the resultant thermal stability of bonds after aging at high temperatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1989 Cryogenic Engineering Conference, meeting jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference, was held on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles from July 24 to 28. Professor T.H.K. Frederking was the conference chairman. The Conference had previously met at U.C.L.A. in 1962 and 1969. A special symposium, "A Half Century of Superfluid Helium," was a significant part of the program of CEC-89. We were especially fortunate to have Professor Jack Allen of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland present at the Conference; his paper, "Early Superfluidity in Cambridge, 1936 to 1939," was a delightful, often humorous account of the early experimental work with superfluid helium. Professors V.L. Ginzburg and J.L. Olesen could not be present for the Symposium, but provided papers which are published in these proceedings. The late Bill Fairbank, responding graciously to a last-minute invitation from Professor Frederking, presented a wonderful account of superfluid research in the United States in the post-war years.
