This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Danville, Montour County, Pennsylvania: A Collection of Historical and Biographical Sketches In the list of secular studies history is among the most interesting and the most important. Indeed, there seems to be an almost universal desire to lift the misty veil of the past, and to note the changing scenes that mark the progress of Adams family through all the centuries past and gone. Not alone to satisfy the cravings of a curiosity that is commendable, but because the richest lessons of wisdom are drawn from the experience of the past. Still more interesting and important is the general, and, especially, the biographical history of our own locality. Here, with emotions of strange delight we trace the stern, heroic lives of the pioneers, and with ever-increasing interest watch the growing fields succeed the forest, pleasant homes supplant the rude log cabin, and the development of society as it joins the onward march to a higher civilization. On the other hand, there is a desire no less universal to be remembered by those who come after us. Thus prompted, men have sought out the most enduring material by which to transmit their names and achievements down the ages. They have reared monuments of granite, carved their deeds on the solid marble, and written their names on the everlasting rocks. But all those have yielded to the corroding power of Time, and their moldering remnants become the subjects of uncertain speculation to the antiquarian. Written history is the great conservator of the past and the most enduring memorial for the ages to come. The wondrous tower on the plains of Shinar is leveled with the dust from which it rose, and the glory of Babylon is shrouded in darkness. Book The Parochial History of Ackworth Yorks

Download or read book The Parochial History of Ackworth Yorks written by J. L. Saywell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parochial History of Ackworth, Yorks: With Archaeological, Antiquarian, and Biographical Notes Records Rev. Charles A. Wells, Organising Secretary of the Church Defence Institution. At the recent Church Congress at' Wakefield, the question of the best means of instructing the classes, as well as the masses, in the origin, history, revenues, and work Of the Church was proposed, but does not seem to have received any very definite reply. You will perhaps, therefore, allow me to make one or two practical suggestions, as to the best way of attaining the Object in hand: 1. A his tory of the Parish Church, its architecture, registers, and en dowments, written by one of the clergy, or some other well qualified person; should be' circulated in pamphlet form throughout every parish. This is the first step towards arousing interest in Church history and Church work. 2. A list of rectors or Vicars, from the foundation of the Church and formation of the parish, should be placed within or without every Church; and, where possible, the names of patrons, curates, and churchwardens should be added. If the parochial chest will not furnish requisite information, a Visit to the diocesan registry generally will. 3. Local biographies are also most interesting, of which each parish might easily furnish one or more. 4. Interest should also be secured in the local press, mis-statements should be at once corrected, and sound informa tion given; short articles and notes on Church questions, with local sketches, should be offered to the different editors. 5. Historical and instructive leaflets should be widely circulated, and lectures on Church history, illustrated by the magic lantern, should be arranged for in every parish during the winter months. Both illustrated lectures and leaflets can be obtained on application to the offices of the Church Defence Institution.' It is, therefore, most desirable that the clergy should be encouraged to do what they can towards writing a history of their own parishes. The Rev. J. L. Saywell, who has written the History of Northallerton, and who was formerly curate of Ackworth, is well qualified to write the Parochial History Of Ackworth, and it is hoped that the. Book Notes and Queries Vol 2

Download or read book Notes and Queries Vol 2 written by P. F. S. Amery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Queries, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Local History Biography and Antiquities of the County of Devon; From January 1902 to October 1903 On the completion of the second volume of Down Notes Queries, we have to express our thanks to the many contributors who have assisted us during the two years over which its publication has extended. The contents are varied, and much information, in connection with many matters relating to our county, has been collected and preserved in our pages. The supplementary parts, containing Mr. Crossing's Crosses of the Moor, which has been completed, and the Morebath Churchwardens' Accounts, edited by the Rev. J. Erskine Binney, which are still in course of printing, have been much appreciated, appealing of course to different interests. The success of the Magazine justifies our belief that such a publication was a want, and we have done our best, with the assistance of our publisher, to produce a satisfactory medium of communication between the many lovers of the history, literature and antiquities of Devon. We again ask for contributions, that the new volume commencing in January next may be worthy of its predecessors. Notes of historical events and documents, on places, things and persons will be welcome, and photo graphs of objects of archeological value will be gladly received. Book History of Dorchester County Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Dorchester County Maryland Classic Reprint written by Elias Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dorchester County, Maryland This fragmentary collection of local history and biography is only a glimpse at the interesting events occurring in Dorchester County from its origin, two hundred and thirty-three years ago, to the present day. In compiling this local record, references to State events and people have been frequently made in order to explain the cause and effect of local acts which have had their influences in county affairs. Especially has it been the purpose to note the names of the promoters of the county as well as to mention their deeds. In this fast age of book and newspaper literature when every inmate of the American home must daily read the current his tory of the world as it transpires, there is no reasonable excuse why a history of Dorchester County Should not be published. It has been the desire of the author to give a truthful narration of the events treated, and while the diction may not be all that could be desired, it is set forth as an earnest effort, to which the reader is asked to bestow that indulgence which the work merits. If due credit has not been given, either by reference or quotation, for any language used in this book, it is an act of unintentional omission. Book History of Franklin County Indiana

Download or read book History of Franklin County Indiana written by August J. Reifel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Franklin County, Indiana: Her People, Industries and Institutions The history of Franklin county extends over more than a hundred years, and this makes the task of the historian difficult, in view of the fact that the complete records of the countv were not available for examination. It is impossible to write history without records, and the absence of the early records of Franklin county necessarily left a gap which had to be filled from traditional accounts. However, the county is fortunate in having a file of newspapers running back for nearly eighty years, and these proved to be of inestimable value to the historian in getting first-hand information. In addition to the official records and newspapers, frequent use was made of scrap books containing much valuable data. These three sources - records, newspapers and scrap books - have been supplemented with numerous inter views with various people oi the county, and the editor is under obligation to scores of persons in all parts of the countv who have volunteered information on a wide variety of subjects. Undoubtedly, the most important source of intorniation outside of the records and newspapers was to be found in the scrap books and miscellaneous data furnished by Miss Jennie Miller, of Brookville. Her brother, James M. Miller, was an indefatigable collector of data covering all phases of Franklin county'history and at his death had the best collection of local, historical data in the county. Mr. Miller was an invalid from his boyhood, yet, despite his inability to get around, he amassed a wonderful amount of material touching the history of the county. Among other persons who tendered their private collections of historical data, should be. Mentioned Miss Lucinda Meeks, Mrs. S. S. Harrell, Mrs. W. H. Bracken, Harry M. Stoops, Mrs. Martha Goodwin, Michael Jacobs, Dr. J. E. Morton, George S. Golden, John C. Shirk, T. L. Dickerson, T. B. Thackrey, I. M. Bridgeman and M. H. Irwin. Rev. Andrew Schaaf, pastor of St. Michael's church of Brookville, gathered all of the data on the Catholic churches of the county for the his tory and rendered valuable assistance in all matters pertaining to history of Catholic affairs in the county. This would render it necessary that the book should consist rather of paragraphs than of chapters; and that these should frequently have little or no connection; many of them being very brief, because they will contain merely some observation or the notice of some fact, for which half a dozen lines will suffice. Book Autographical Notes From the Life and Letters of Ezra Michener M D Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autographical Notes From the Life and Letters of Ezra Michener, M. D It is true that my impulse was forward, and I may sometimes have uttered advanced thoughts of some merit, but they have been too often lost in the distant past or absorbed by more modern developments. I have been careful to preserve serial copies of the printed effusions of my pen, however ephemeral their import, together with many memoranda and comments relating to my life history. In this collection of over five hundred items there are many which had a mere local or temporary application, and require no further consideration some that contained, at the period when they were written, an adyanced thought which may be worth preserving; some that will only need a brief summary of their import; some that may be better represented by appropriate extracts, and some that will prefer to vindicate their claims in their own way. This task I assigned to myself two years ago, but the loss of my dear Mary, and'the severe bodily injury that I received a few days after from a fall, have' frustrated that intention. I now feel that the treasure is no longer mine it must soon become the property of others whose duty it will be to direct its disposal, whether it may be to make brief selections from the mass for preserva tion as an incentive to emulation among the young, or to consign the whole to merited oblivion. Download or read book Sketches of Hull Authors Classic Reprint written by Reginald Walter Corlass and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Hull Authors IN presenting this little work, the editors recognise the fact that, although it may be said Hull Authors have already been well chronicled, no collection of local biography has hitherto been made. As the first attempt, therefore, in this direction, the editors hope that the present volume on the lives and works of those authors who have been natives of, or intimately connected with Hull, may prove a welcome and useful addition to local literature as a work of reference, besides being of equal interest to the general reader. The Sketches comprise most of those who may be ranked as Hull Authors, and are based on a series of articles which appeared originally in the Eastern Morning News for 1876, and they are now published with considerable additional matter and corrections from the author's notes. The Sketches also include some information which has not previously appeared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Story of Old Rensselaerville written by Mary Fisher Torrance and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Old Rensselaerville: Based on Old Documents, Early Publications, Public Records, Family Letters and Data Furnished by Oldest Inhabitants, Welded Together, and Hoping to Make Sense Every school child who has studied the history of the Empire State, knows of Hendrick Hudson his sail in the little sloop The Halfmoon, scarcely larger than a pleasure boat, carrying a crew of 18 men, up the river which later was to bear his name. The story goes that he went about as far as the present site of Albany, and decided to go no further. There he planted his flag, and claimed the land in the name of the Dutch. The word went back to Holland, and the Crown wasted no time in pushing its claim. As early as the year 1618, a treaty was drawn up between the Dutch governor of the New Nether lands and the chiefs of the Five Nations, then constituting the Iroquois, stipulating that no land was to be appropriated by settlers, without first satisfying the Indians in actual posses sion. Out of this treaty, an alliance was formed that worked satisfactorily for both sides; the Dutch needed the Iroquois, as allies against the French invasions from Canada, while the Iroquois required the Dutch, with their firearms, as against the Algonquin Indians in Canada, who were getting their firearms from the French.
