Book excerpt: The 25 papers in this proceedings were presented by national and international information systems experts, development planners, and scholars at a seminar that was jointly sponsored by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development and the city of Kawasaki, Japan. Designed to reach a wider group of interested planning practitioners and information systems specialists, the report begins with two keynote addresses: "Information Technology and Regional Development--Challenges and Opportunities for Developing Countries" (Hidehiko Sazanami); and "Public/Private Partnerships in Information Systems in Public Administration" (Jean V. Salmona). The texts of 22 papers are then presented in five categories: (1) The Challenges of Information Systems Today; (2) Comparative Case Studies of Information Systems Projects; (3) Training in Information Systems; (4) Developing and Implementing Effective Information Systems Strategies; and (5) The Advanced Information City. A synthesis of the findings of research on information systems implementation in developing countries concludes the report.
