Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boundaries of Counties and Parishes in Scotland as Settled by the Boundary Commissioners Under the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889 The number of those to whom I am indebted for assistance makes it impossible to thank them all by name. In the course of a some what voluminous correspondence, I have uniformly met with the utmost readiness to assist, without any regard on the part of my correspondents to the trouble entailed on them. Inspectors of Poor especially have laid me under obligations, of which I am the more sensible when I recall the many valuable public services which they habitually render without remuneration. But I cannot too warmly thank Mr. Anemone Bans, formerly County Assessor. Perth, and now City Assessor, Aberdeen, for his unwearied and efficient aid, without which it would have been impossible for me to ascertain the various subjects affected by the complicated readjustments of area in Perthshire. For details as to the portions of Railway Lines trans ferred I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. W. Munro, Assessor of Railways and Canals. Book The Town Council Seals of Scotland

Download or read book The Town Council Seals of Scotland written by Alexander Porteous and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Town Council Seals of Scotland: Historical, Legendary and Heraldic Ection 55 of the Burgh Police (scotland) Act 1892 ordains that: (1) The S Commissioners shall be a body corporate, having a Common Seal. The Seal shall bear a device to be fixed on by the Commissioners at a meeting to be held for the purpose. Again, Section 5 of the Town Councils (scotland) Act, 1900, ordains that: A Town Council shall be elected for every Burgh under the provisions of this Act, and shall be designated by the corporate name of 'the provost, magis trates and councillors of the Burgh, and the Common Seal will be used and adhibited under their authority and subject to their directions. Under this latter Act the Commissioners thus became Town Councillors, and it was necessary to alter the legends round the Seals accordingly. In most cases this has been done, but a few still retain the word Commissioners. All Royal and Parliamentary Burghs used Seals long previous to the passing of the Act of 1892 which they still retain, but it is now necessary for all municipalities to have a Common Seal. Book Handbook of Town Planning

Download or read book Handbook of Town Planning written by John L. Jack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Town Planning: As Applicable to Scotland The importance of the town planning provisions of the Act is likely to induce many local authorities in Scotland, in the near future, to take the matter up, either on their own initiative or at the instance of the Local Government Board. Perhaps one of the best features of a town planning scheme is that pro visions may be made therein for restricting the number of buildings which may be erected per acre, and the height and character thereof. The fact that the provisions for town planning are embraced in the Acts dealing with the housing of the working classes is apt to convey the impression that these provisions form a complicated piece of machinery, and the imten tion of the present handbook is to give such a general outline of the town planning provisions applicable to Scotland, and the steps of procedure connected there with, as will be readily followed by town and county councillors and others interested in carrying out the Act. The Appendix hereto contains a copy of the Act and the Regulations of the Local Government Board for Scotland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
