Essential for exploiting their potential is the ability to reliably predict their mechanical behaviour, particularly the onset and propagation of failure. Part One investigates numerical modeling approaches to interlaminar failure in advanced composite materials. Part Two considers numerical modelling approaches to intralaminar failure. Part Three presents new and emerging advanced numerical algorithms for modeling and simulation of failure. Part Four closes by examining the various engineering and scientific applications of numerical modeling for analysis of failure in advanced composite materials, such as prediction of impact damage, failure in textile composites, and fracture behavior in through-thickness reinforced laminates. - Examines the most recent analysis models for advanced composite materials in a coherent and comprehensive manner - Investigates numerical modelling approaches to interlaminar failure and intralaminar failure in advanced composite materials - Reviews advanced numerical algorithms for modeling and simulation of failure - Examines various engineering and scientific applications of numerical modelling for analysis of failure in advanced composite materials

Download or read book Multi Scale Modelling of Composite Material Systems written by C Soutis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-08-29 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important and exciting areas of composites research is the development of modelling techniques to predict the response of composite materials to different types of stress. Predictive modelling provides the opportunity both to understand better how composites behave in different conditions and to develop materials with enhanced performance for particular industrial applications. Multi-scale modelling of composite material systems summarises the key research in this area and its implications for industry. The book covers modelling approaches ranging from the micron to the metre in scale, and from the single fibre to complete composite structures. Individual chapters discuss a variety of material types from laminates and fibre-reinforced composites to monolithic and sandwich composites. They also analyse a range of types of stress and stress response from fracture and impact to wear and fatigue. Authors also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of particular models. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Multi-scale modelling of composite material systems is a standard reference for both academics and manufacturers in such areas as aerospace, automotive and civil engineering. - Extensive coverage of this important and exciting area of composites research - Understand how composites behave in different circumstances - Compiled by an expert panel of authors and editors
Download or read book Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites written by Peter Beaumont and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites: Innovative Modelling Methods and Intelligent Design presents scientific and technological research from leading composite materials scientists and engineers that showcase the fundamental issues and practical problems that affect the development and exploitation of large composite structures. As predicting precisely where cracks may develop in materials under stress is an age old mystery in the design and building of large-scale engineering structures, the burden of testing to provide "fracture safe design" is imperative. Readers will learn to transfer key ideas from research and development to both the design engineer and end-user of composite materials. This comprehensive text provides the information users need to understand deformation and fracture phenomena resulting from impact, fatigue, creep, and stress corrosion cracking and how these phenomena can affect reliability, life expectancy, and the durability of structures. - Presents scientific and technological research from leading composite materials scientists and engineers that showcase fundamental issues and practical problems - Provides the information users need to understand deformation and fracture phenomena resulting from impact, fatigue, creep, and stress corrosion cracking - Enables readers to transfer key ideas from research and development to both the design engineer and end-user of composite materials

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Matrix Cracking and Delamination in Glass epoxy Laminates written by M. Caslini and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on characterizing matrix cracking and delamination behavior in multidirectional laminates. Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. Keywords: Fatigue(Mechanics), and Stiffness loss.

Download or read book Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures written by Rikard Benton Heslehurst and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advantages of composite materials include a high specific strength and stiffness, formability, and a comparative resistance to fatigue cracking and corrosion. However, not forsaking these advantages, composite materials are prone to a wide range of defects and damage that can significantly reduce the residual strength and stiffness of a structure or result in unfavorable load paths. Emphasizing defect identification and restitution, Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures explains how defects and damage in composite materials and structures impact composite component performance. Providing ready access to an extensive, descriptive list of defects and damage types, this must-have reference: Examines defect criticality in composite structures Recommends repair actions to restore structural integrity Discusses failure modes and mechanisms of composites due to defects Reviews NDI processes for finding and identifying defects in composite materials Relating defect detection methods to defect type, the author merges his experience in the field of in-service activities for composite airframe maintenance and repair with indispensable reports and articles on defects and damage in advanced composite materials from the last 50 years.
