Book The Word Value First Latin Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Word Value First Latin Book Classic Reprint written by Ephraim Cutler Shedd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Word-Value; First Latin Book The reading contains in all about eleven thousand words, and the written exercises about six thousand. Thus the words found in the special lists each occur from sixty to seventy times in the book. Naturally some occur more fre quently than others, but scarcely more than six less than thirty or forty times. There are also lists of English words derived from the Latin, Allied Words, which aid the memory when aid is most needed. The Latin words are thus so impressed upon the memory by repetition and the association of ideas that the pupil can scarcely choose but learn them. It is believed that this method has never before been applied so thoroughly and systematically.' The saving of time thus secured permits the introduction of reading lessons of some length, and of sentences with a complex word order. The value of the latter as a prepara tion for classical Latin is obvious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Word and Phrase

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Word and Phrase: True and False Use in English Language is the amber in which a thousand precious and subtle thoughts have been safely imbedded and preserved. It has arrested ten thousand flashes of genius which, unless thus fixed and arrested, might have been as bright, but would also have been as quickly pass ing and perishing, as the lightning. Words convey the mental treas ures of one generation to the generations that follow; and laden with this. Their precious freight, they sail safely across gulfs of time in which empires have suffered shipwreck and the languages of common life have sunk into oblivion. And for all these reasons far more and mightier every way is a language than any one of the works which have been composed in it. - trench, Study qf Words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Lessons for Beginners Y and Z began to be used in the first century b.c., in a few words borrowed from the Greeks, to represent sounds foreign to Latin. The Romans themselves used but one Sign V for both the vowel U and the semi consonantal V (pronounced w), and similarly one sign I for both the vowel I and the semi-consonantal J (pronounced y). For the sake of convenience and clearness, however, many modern books (especially those for beginners in Latin) follow the custom that arose in the middle ages, of using distinct signs for the different sounds. Book Borrowed Words

Download or read book Borrowed Words written by Philip Durkin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 871 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich variety of the English vocabulary reflects the vast number of words it has taken from other languages. These range from Latin, Greek, Scandinavian, Celtic, French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian to, among others, Hebrew, Maori, Malay, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, andYiddish. Philip Durkin's full and accessible history reveals how, when, and why. He shows how to discover the origins of loanwords, when and why they were adopted, and what happens to them once they have been. The long documented history of English includes contact with languages in a variety of contexts, including: the dissemination of Christian culture in Latin in Anglo-Saxon England, and the interactions of French, Latin, Scandinavian, Celtic, and English during the Middle Ages; exposure to languages throughout the world during the colonial era; and the effects of using English as an international language of science. Philip Durkin describes these and other historical inputs, introducing the approaches each requires, from the comparative method for the earliest period to documentary and corpus research in the modern. The discussion is illustrated at every point with examples taken from a variety of different sources. The framework Dr Durkin develops can be used to explore lexical borrowing in any language. This outstanding book is for everyone interested in English etymology and in loanwords more generally. It will appeal to a wide general public and at the same time offers a valuable reference for scholars and students of the history of English.
