Book excerpt: Ad hoc networks consist of a set of homogeneous nodes (computers or embedded devices) that move in an independent fashion and communicate with the other node in the topology over a wireless channel. Such networks are logically realized as a set of clusters by grouping together nodes which are in close proximity with one another or through another wireless node. Clusters are formed by clubbing together nodes along the wireless links. Cluster Heads are the nodes which communicate with the other nodes that it can cover under its communication range. Cluster Heads form a virtual backbone and may be used to route packets for nodes in their cluster. Nodes, being in an Ad Hoc network, are presumed to have a non-deterministic mobility pattern. Different heuristics employ different policies to elect Cluster Heads. Many of these policies are biased in favor of some nodes. As a result, these nodes shoulder greater responsibility which may deplete their energy faster due higher number of communication made, causing them to drop out of the network. Therefore, there is a need for load-balancing among Cluster Heads to allow all nodes the opportunity to serve as a Cluster Head. I propose a few enhancements to existing algorithms to remove the unbalanced distribution of nodes under the Cluster Heads and increase the active life of a node in a network.

Thus, this collaborative and distributed computing environment demands interoperatibilty among the devices. The additional features never come for free as they make the routing and other services more challenging and causes vulnerabilities in network services. Resource constrained, battery powered wireless mobile nodes not only have to self configure and self monitor them but also generates a very accommodating, trustworthy and affable environment. A classification of routing protocols and their brief description, based on their operating principles and underlying features is explained in this paper.

Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

In scenarios where same intermediate node is used for longer time, this behavior may cause the traffic concentration on few intermediate nodes resulting in large latency and depletion of battery power at the nodes. To overcome this problem, a load balancing algorithm is proposed in this thesis. Each node forwards its residual energy information to all its neighbor nodes using reserved fields in the hello packets. Each node calculates a desirability metric, for each of its neighbor, based on the neighbor's energy information and the available bandwidth towards it. The choice of a particular route depends upon the desirability metric of the next hop. The proposed scheme is independent of the underlying routing protocol however the routing protocol should be able to save multiple routes to a destination and be able to put and retrieve the energy information to and from the hello messages.
