Download or read book Load and Resistance Factor Design of Cold formed Stainless Steel Structural Members written by Shin-Hua Lin and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The allowable stress design (ASD) method has long been used for the design of steel structures in the United States. Recently, the probability-based load and resistance factor design (LRFD) criteria have been successfully applied to the structural design of hot-rolled steel shapes and built-up members. The AISI LRFD Specification is being developed as well for the design of structural members cold-formed from carbon and low alloy steels. This design method is based on the "Limit States Design" philosophy, which is related to the ultimate strength and serviceability of the structural members and connections. Cold-formed stainless steel sections have gained increasing use in architectural and structural applications in recent years due to their superior corrosion resistance, ease of maintenance, and attractive appearance. The current Specification for the design of cold-formed stainless steel structural members and connections was published by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) in 1974. This design Specification was based on the allowable stress design method. In order to develop the new design criteria for cold-formed stainless steel structural members, a research project entitled "Load and Resistance Factor Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel" has been conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla. This project contains two phases: (1) to prepare an updated allowable stress design specification and (2) to develop the new load and resistance factor design criteria for cold-formed stainless steel structural members and connections. The proposed new ASD Specification and Commentary for the design of cold-formed stainless steel structural members have been completed and published in the Third Progress Report of this project. This dissertation mainly discusses the development of the LRFD criteria for cold-formed stainless steel structural members and connections. These design criteria were developed on the basis of the first order probabilistic theory, for which only the mean value and coefficient of variation of variables are required. These variables reflect the uncertainties in mechanical properties of materials, load effects, design assumption, and fabrication. As the initial step of the investigation, statistical analyses of mechanical properties and thicknesses for various types of stainless steels have been evaluated. The modified Ramberg-Osgood equation has been used in this study for determining the secant modulus, tangent modulus, and plasticity reduction factor. Theoretical basis of the probability-based LRFD criteria and procedures used to calibrate the design provisions are discussed in detail. The resistance factors obtained from the calibrations have been recommended for use in the LRFD criteria. Because the LRFD method involves probabilistic considerations for uncertain variables in the design formulas, this method can provide a more uniform overall safety and reliability for structural design"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a traditional design, the Allowable Stress method has long been used for the design of cold-formed steel structures. In this design approach, the allowable stress is always used to prevent the possible structural failure by using an appropriate factor of safety selected primarily on the basis of engineering judgment and long-time experience. Recently, the concepts of risk and reliability analysis have been successfully applied to many fields of engineering. By applying the theories of probability and statistics, the load and resistance design criteria for steel structures have been developed for the design of hot-rolled steel shapes and built-up members. This method is based on the ultimate strength and serviceability of the structural members and connections. In order to develop the new design criteria for cold-formed steel structural members, a research project entitled "Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of Cold-Formed Steel" has been recently conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla and Washington University. This study has included the selection of a probabilistic model, the evaluation of load factors, the calibration of safety indexes for the allowable stress design criteria issued by the American Iron and steel Institute, and the determination of resistance factors. Based on the safety indexes selected for cold-formed steel structural members and connections, the load and resistance factor design criteria for cold-formed steel have been developed by using the first order probabilistic theory and the statistical data on mechanical properties of materials and the test results obtained from previous research. In this method, appropriate load factors and resistance factors are applied to specified loads and nominal resistance to ensure that the limit state is not exceeded. Because these factors reflect the uncertainties of analysis, design, loading, material properties and fabrication, this design method can provide a more uniform overall safety and structural reliability"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.

Book excerpt: Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members provides design criteria for the determination of the strength of stainless steel structural members and connections for use in buildings and other statically loaded structures. The members may be cold-formed to shape from annealed and cold-rolled sheet, strip, plate, or flat bar stainless steel material. Design criteria are provided for axially loaded tension or compression members, flexural members subjected to bending and shear, and members subjected to combined axial load and bending. The specification provides the design strength criteria using load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and the allowable stress design (ASD) methods. The reasoning behind and the justification for various provisions of the specification are also presented. The design strength requirements of this Standard are intended for use by structural engineers and those engaged in preparing and administrating local building codes.

Book Reliability Based Criteria for Cold formed Steel Members

Download or read book Reliability Based Criteria for Cold formed Steel Members written by Ling-En Hsiao and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the design of steel buildings, the "Allowable Stress Design (ASD)" method has long been used for cold-formed steel structural members in the United States and other countries. In this approach, member forces, or moments, determined on the basis of working loads should not exceed the allowable values. The allowable value is used to prevent the possible structural failure by using an appropriate factor of safety selected primarily on the basis of engineering judgment and long-time experience. Recently, in the United States, the concepts of risk and reliability analysis have been successfully applied to the Load and Resistance Factor Design criteria for steel buildings using hot-rolled shapes, and built-up members fabricated from steel plates. In order to develop reliability based design criteria for cold-formed steel members, a, joint research project entitled "Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of Cold-Formed Steel" was conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla, Washington University, and the University of Minnesota. This study included the selection of a reliability analysis model; the evaluation of load factors; the calibration of the design provisions; the determination of resistance factors; the comparative study of design methods for cold-formed steel; and the preparation of the LRFD design manual for cold-formed steel. However, only the development of the reliability based design criteria, and the comparative study of design methods for cold-formed steel are discussed in this dissertation"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Development of Design Criteria for Ferritic Stainless Steel Cold formed Structural Members and Connections

Download or read book Development of Design Criteria for Ferritic Stainless Steel Cold formed Structural Members and Connections written by Pieter van der Merwe and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This dissertation describes the development of the basic criteria needed for the design of structural members cold-formed from certain ferritic stainless steels. The Allowable Stress Design method as well as the Load and Resistance Factor Design method receive attention. The ferritic stainless steels under consideration are: Types AISI 409 and 430 as well as a modified Type 409 steel, designated 3CR12 steel, developed and produced by the speciality steel producing company, Middelburg Steel and Alloys in South Africa. The mechanical properties needed for structural design are established. It is shown through an experimental study that the design provisions for the carbon and low-alloy steels as well as those for the austenitic stainless steels, are suitable for the ferritic stainless steels in as far as local and post buckling behavior of flat stiffened and unstiffened compression elements of member sections are concerned. Investigations into the behavior of flexural members and axially loaded compression members indicate that aspects such as ultimate moment capacity and deflection of flexural members and overall column buckling of compression members may be predicted with confidence. The performances of bolted and welded connections are also evaluated. The experimental results are statistically analyzed to provide the information required for the development of resistance factors for the Load and Resistance Factor Design Method. The needs for future research are identified"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book Probabilistic Structural Mechanics Handbook

Download or read book Probabilistic Structural Mechanics Handbook written by C.R. Sundararajan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for a comprehensive book on probabilistic structural mechanics that brings together the many analytical and computational methods developed over the years and their applications in a wide spectrum of industries-from residential buildings to nuclear power plants, from bridges to pressure vessels, from steel structures to ceramic structures-became evident from the many discussions the editor had with practising engineers, researchers and professors. Because no single individual has the expertise to write a book with such a di.verse scope, a group of 39 authors from universities, research laboratories, and industries from six countries in three continents was invited to write 30 chapters covering the various aspects of probabilistic structural mechanics. The editor and the authors believe that this handbook will serve as a reference text to practicing engineers, teachers, students and researchers. It may also be used as a textbook for graduate-level courses in probabilistic structural mechanics. The editor wishes to thank the chapter authors for their contributions. This handbook would not have been a reality without their collaboration.
