Book Symplectic 4 Manifolds and Algebraic Surfaces

Download or read book Symplectic 4 Manifolds and Algebraic Surfaces written by Fabrizio Catanese and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern approaches to the study of symplectic 4-manifolds and algebraic surfaces combine a wide range of techniques and sources of inspiration. Gauge theory, symplectic geometry, pseudoholomorphic curves, singularity theory, moduli spaces, braid groups, monodromy, in addition to classical topology and algebraic geometry, combine to make this one of the most vibrant and active areas of research in mathematics. It is our hope that the five lectures of the present volume given at the C.I.M.E. Summer School held in Cetraro, Italy, September 2-10, 2003 will be useful to people working in related areas of mathematics and will become standard references on these topics. The volume is a coherent exposition of an active field of current research focusing on the introduction of new methods for the study of moduli spaces of complex structures on algebraic surfaces, and for the investigation of symplectic topology in dimension 4 and higher.

Book Enumerative Invariants in Algebraic Geometry and String Theory

Download or read book Enumerative Invariants in Algebraic Geometry and String Theory written by Marcos Marino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the middle of the 80s, there has been a growing and fruitful interaction between algebraic geometry and certain areas of theoretical high-energy physics, especially the various versions of string theory. Physical heuristics have provided inspiration for new mathematical definitions (such as that of Gromov-Witten invariants) leading in turn to the solution of problems in enumerative geometry. Conversely, the availability of mathematically rigorous definitions and theorems has benefited the physics research by providing the required evidence in fields where experimental testing seems problematic. The aim of this volume, a result of the CIME Summer School held in Cetraro, Italy, in 2005, is to cover part of the most recent and interesting findings in this subject.

Book Pseudo Differential Operators

Download or read book Pseudo Differential Operators written by Hans G. Feichtinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudo-differential operators were initiated by Kohn, Nirenberg and Hörmander in the sixties of the last century. Beside applications in the general theory of partial differential equations, they have their roots also in the study of quantization first envisaged by Hermann Weyl thirty years earlier. Thanks to the understanding of the connections of wavelets with other branches of mathematical analysis, quantum physics and engineering, such operators have been used under different names as mathematical models in signal analysis since the last decade of the last century. The volume investigates the mathematics of quantization and signals in the context of pseudo-differential operators, Weyl transforms, Daubechies operators, Wick quantization and time-frequency localization operators. Applications to quantization, signal analysis and the modern theory of PDE are highlighted.

Book Nonlinear and Optimal Control Theory

Download or read book Nonlinear and Optimal Control Theory written by Andrei A. Agrachev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-06-24 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lectures gathered in this volume present some of the different aspects of Mathematical Control Theory. Adopting the point of view of Geometric Control Theory and of Nonlinear Control Theory, the lectures focus on some aspects of the Optimization and Control of nonlinear, not necessarily smooth, dynamical systems. Specifically, three of the five lectures discuss respectively: logic-based switching control, sliding mode control and the input to the state stability paradigm for the control and stability of nonlinear systems. The remaining two lectures are devoted to Optimal Control: one investigates the connections between Optimal Control Theory, Dynamical Systems and Differential Geometry, while the second presents a very general version, in a non-smooth context, of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. The arguments of the whole volume are self-contained and are directed to everyone working in Control Theory. They offer a sound presentation of the methods employed in the control and optimization of nonlinear dynamical systems.

Book The Global Theory of Minimal Surfaces in Flat Spaces

Download or read book The Global Theory of Minimal Surfaces in Flat Spaces written by William Meeks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second half of the twentieth century the global theory of minimal surface in flat space had an unexpected and rapid blossoming. Some of the classical problems were solved and new classes of minimal surfaces found. Minimal surfaces are now studied from several different viewpoints using methods and techniques from analysis (real and complex), topology and geometry. In this lecture course, Meeks, Ros and Rosenberg, three of the main architects of the modern edifice, present some of the more recent methods and developments of the theory. The topics include moduli, asymptotic geometry and surfaces of constant mean curvature in the hyperbolic space.

Book Dynamical Systems and Small Divisors

Download or read book Dynamical Systems and Small Divisors written by Hakan Eliasson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many problems of stability in the theory of dynamical systems face the difficulty of small divisors. The most famous example is probably given by Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory in the context of Hamiltonian systems, with many applications to physics and astronomy. Other natural small divisor problems arise considering circle diffeomorphisms or quasiperiodic Schroedinger operators. In this volume Hakan Eliasson, Sergei Kuksin and Jean-Christophe Yoccoz illustrate the most recent developments of this theory both in finite and infinite dimension. A list of open problems (including some problems contributed by John Mather and Michel Herman) has been included.

Book Mixed Finite Elements Compatibility Conditions and Applications

Download or read book Mixed Finite Elements Compatibility Conditions and Applications written by Daniele Boffi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 70's, mixed finite elements have been the object of a wide and deep study by the mathematical and engineering communities. The fundamental role of this method for many application fields has been worldwide recognized and its use has been introduced in several commercial codes. An important feature of mixed finite elements is the interplay between theory and application. Discretization spaces for mixed schemes require suitable compatibilities, so that simple minded approximations generally do not work and the design of appropriate stabilizations gives rise to challenging mathematical problems. This volume collects the lecture notes of a C.I.M.E. course held in Summer 2006, when some of the most world recognized experts in the field reviewed the rigorous setting of mixed finite elements and revisited it after more than 30 years of practice. Applications, in this volume, range from traditional ones, like fluid-dynamics or elasticity, to more recent and active fields, like electromagnetism.
