A computer program, developed to solve for the required excitation coefficients, is outlined and appended. Numerical examples of independent excitations, which provide the maximum sum pattern gain factor or maximum difference pattern angular sensitivity factor, are compared with other reported aperture distributions. A tandem series-feed network capable of providing independent array excitations is described and the listing of a computer program for the practical design of a feed network is appended. Phased array applications to Displaced Phase Center Antennas, as used in airborne MTI systems, were investigated and the monopulse excitation requirements have been determined. (Author).

Book excerpt: Monopulse antenna patterns can be conveniently obtained by phase comparing the two halves of an equiphased line source aperture. The generally unsatisfactory sidelobe performance of this type antenna has, however, seriously limited its application. A mathematical derivation and physical interpretation of line source excitations which maximize sum gain, subject to sum and difference pattern sidelobe constraints, are presented in this report. A computer program to solve for the required excitation coefficients is outlined and the Fortran IV listing is appended. Numerical examples are included for a representative number of practical cases and one of the derived aperture excitations is selected as the design basis for an experimental linear array. A discussion of the array feed design is followed by a summary of laboratory and pattern range measurement data. (Author).

Current techniques utilize only the antenna amplitude distribution to produce lower sidelobes. This report presents results of an investigation of combined amplitude and phase tapering to produce lower sidelobes. Combinations of phase and amplitude distributions and the resulting far-field patterns were studied theoretically through computer analysis. Gaussian phase tapers with cosine and modified Taylor amplitude distributions were studied in detail. Experimental work included the construction of a dielectric lens for a horn antenna that significantly lowered the sidelobe level. Design information was compiled to demonstrate tradeoffs between amplitude tapering alone and combined phase and amplitude tapering. (Author).
