Book Shipping Economics

Download or read book Shipping Economics written by Kevin Cullinane and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-06-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipping is by far the most significant mode of transportation for the carriage of freight. In terms of volume alone, no other mode comes close. Its dominance is even more overwhelming when distances are accounted for. This book is concerned with the economics of this pivotal mode of transportation. It reveals that the influences on the development and current state of shipping economics research are extremely eclectic. The various chapters in the book represent areas that are of central concern to ongoing research in the field. As such, the book is useful to students, researchers, industrialists, policy makers and consultants. The authors of the contributed chapters are some of the leading names in the world of shipping economics, addressing a number of diverse areas: The econometric modeling of shipping markets; Shipping finance (a critical issue in such a capital intensive industry); Fiscal policy (and its impact on an international industry with great asset mobility) and Safety and security (aspects that have risen to prominence with increasing concerns over the environment and international terrorism). Ultimately, while shipping as a business depends upon trade, it is absolutely certain that the business of trade depends upon shipping. The final two chapters, therefore, incorporate aspects of network economics, welfare economics and international trade theory to analyze where and how shipping sits within the wider perspective of industrial supply chains. Professor Kevin Cullinane, BA BSc MSc PhD FCILT CNI Professor Kevin Cullinane is Chair in Marine Transport and Management at the University of Newcastle in the U.K. He was previously Professor and Head of the Department of Shipping and Transport Logistics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Head of the Centre for International Shipping and Transport at Plymouth University, Senior Partner in his own transport consultancy company and Research Fellow at the University of Oxford Transport Studies Unit. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and has been a transport adviser to the governments of Hong Kong, Egypt, Chile and the U.K. He holds visiting Professorships at a number of institutions and an Honorary Professorship at the University of Hong Kong.

Download or read book Freight Derivatives and Risk Management in Shipping written by Manolis G. Kavussanos and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This advanced practical textbook deals with the issue of risk analysis, measurement and management in the shipping industry. It identifies and analyses the sources of risk in the shipping business and explores in detail the “traditional” and “modern” strategies for risk management at both the investment and operational levels of the business. The special features and characteristics of all available freight derivative products are compared and contrasted between them. Practical applications of derivatives are showcased through realistic practical examples, while a number of concepts across the contents of this book appear for the first time in the literature. The book also serves as “the reference” point for researchers in the area, helping them to enhance their knowledge of risk management and derivatives in the shipping industry, but also to students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Finally, it provides a comprehensive manual for practitioners wishing to engage in the financial risk management of maritime business. This second edition has been fully updated in order to incorporate the numerous developments in the industry since its first edition in 2006. New chapters have been introduced on topics such as Market Risk Measurement, Credit Risk and Credit Derivatives, and Statistical Methods to Quantify Risk. Furthermore, the second edition of this book builds upon the successful first edition which has been extensively (i) taught in a number of Universities around the world and (ii) used by professionals in the industry. Shipowners, professionals in the shipping industry, risk management officers, credit officers, traders, investors, students and researchers will find the book indispensable in order to understand how risk management and hedging tools can make the difference for companies to remain competitive and stay ahead of the rest.

Book Shipping in the Baltic Region

Download or read book Shipping in the Baltic Region written by Michael Roe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an original contribution to the maritime literature focusing on developments in this field in the Baltic Region. This part of the world has seen dramatic changes in recent years, particularly with the collapse of the Communist led regimes in Poland and the Soviet Union, and the emergence of the new states of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia and neighbouring Ukraine and Belarus, the reunification of Germany and the disappearance of the old DDR and the entry of Finland and Sweden to the European Union. This book looks at some of these changes and how they are impacting on the shipping sector. Its topicality reflects on growing research and teaching interests in these fields. Edited by the leading expert in East European maritime affairs and containing original material from the team of researchers at the highly prestigious University of Gdansk, it provides a welcome source of discussion and information and forms part of the new series of texts originating from the Institute of Marine Studies at the University of Plymouth, concentrating on maritime policy, law, economics and marketing.
