Book excerpt: Alex Stone is unemployed, divorced and broke. In his desperation he remembers how he and his now ex-wife thought of a ploy to obtain a very valuable wrist watch from his father before their divorce. Unfortunately his father is now resident in a care home suffering from dementia. Alex leaves the hostel where he is living and makes his way to North Wales where he finds work and a place to live, sharing an apartment with a youngish woman who works at the home. She is seeking romance; Alex isn’t. Alex’s ex-wife, Judith, has the same idea. She persuades her new partner and daughter to accompany her to North Wales. Both she and Alex plan to use their daughter’s forthcoming eighteenth birthday as the reason for James Stone to relinquish the watch. Both are desperate for money and a competition ensues. James has lost the watch. This fact leads the competitors to put pressure on care home staff, the local police and the local vicar. The watch is finally found but problems only multiply especially after James dies. Surprisingly the final outcome is positive for James and his daughter.

Download or read book UK Airfields Past and Present written by Grant Peerless and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2020-10-04 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great many books have been written over the years about individual airfields or those in particular counties/areas but this one covers a good proportion of them in one publication, from Abbots Bromley to Zeals. It provides brief details of over 1700 airfields from before the First World War to the present day and describes the main activities carried out, based units/operators and current status. It includes military bases, civil airports/airfields, gliding sites, microlight sites and larger farm strips, together with the probable number of based aircraft. An appendix lists over 500 books which have been published about individual airfields and this, together with the details provided in this book affords a convenient source of reference for further research. It does not pretend to include every flying site that ever existed as this would require a much larger volume but covers what are considered to be the most significant airfields of the past 110 years. It includes over one hundred photographs in colour and black & white, most of which have not been published previously.
Download or read book Street Trees in Britain written by Mark Johnston and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trees which line many of the streets in our towns and cities can often be regarded as part of a heritage landscape. Despite the difficult conditions of an urban environment, these trees may live for 100 years or more and represent ‘living history’ in the midst of our modern streetscapes. This is the first book on the history of Britain’s street trees and it gives a highly readable, authoritative and often amusing account of their story, from the tree-lined promenades of the seventeenth century to the majestic boulevards that grace some of our modern city centers. The impact of the Victorian street tree movement is examined, not only in the major cities but also in the rapidly developing suburbs that continued to expand through the twentieth century. There are fascinating descriptions of how street trees have helped to improve urban conditions in spa towns and seaside resorts and also in visionary initiatives such as the model villages, garden cities, garden suburbs and new towns. While much of the book focuses on the social and cultural history of our street trees, the last three chapters look at the practicalities of how these trees have been engineered into concrete landscapes. This includes the many threats to street trees over the years, such as pollution, conflict with urban infrastructure, pests and diseases and what is probably the greatest threat in recent times – the dramatic growth in car ownership. Street Trees in Britain will have particular appeal to those interested in heritage landscapes, urban history and the natural and built environment. Some of its themes were introduced in the author’s previous work, the widely acclaimed Trees in Towns and Cities: A History of British Urban Arboriculture.

Download or read book Keeping the faith written by Keith Gildart and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Northern Soul held a pivotal position in British youth culture. Originating in the English North and Midlands in the late-1960s, by the mid-1970s it was attracting thousands of enthusiasts across the country. This book is a social history of Northern Soul, examining the origins and development of this music scene, its clubs, publications and practices. Northern Soul emerged in a period when working class communities were beginning to be transformed by deindustrialisation and the rise of new political movements around the politics of race, gender and locality. Locating Northern Soul in these shifting economic and social contexts of the English North and Midlands in the 1970s, the authors argue that people kept the faith not just with music, but with a culture that was connected to wider aspects of work, home, relationships and social identities. Drawing on an expansive range of sources, including oral histories, magazines and fanzines, diaries and letters, this book offers a detailed and empathetic reading of a working class culture that was created and consumed by thousands of young people in the 1970s. The authors highlight the complex ways in which class, race and gender identities acted as forces for both unity and fragmentation on the dancefloors of iconic clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, Blackpool Mecca, the Torch in Stoke-on-Trent, the Catacombs in Wolverhampton and the Casino in Wigan. Marking a significant contribution to the historiography of youth culture, this book is essential reading for those interested in popular music and everyday life in in postwar Britain.
