Book Surviving Adversity

Download or read book Surviving Adversity written by Kathryn Ann Kamp and published by University of Utah Anthropolog. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on more than ten years of field work, this is the only modern interpretive site report on the Sinagua culture. Lizard Man Village is one of many small settlements in the Flagstaff vicinity occupied by the Sinagua between AD 1050 and 1300. Generally considered affiliated with the Mogollon, the major archaeological culture group in central Arizona, the Sinagua inhabited a region where three distinct groups intersected: the Mogollon, the Hohokam, and the Anasazi. Sinagua survival strategy in this very arid region combined dispersed agriculture with hunting and foraging. It appears that an essentially egalitarian social system allowed flexibility to maximize wild resources and potential agricultural sites or vice versa. The area is characterized by a number of small villages that probably consisted of only a few families each. Precisely because Lizard Man Village is typical of such sites, the authors chose it for intensive fieldwork. According to them, "in its very ordinariness lies its importance." Based on the site report, the authors provide interpretations for comparison to other sites in the Southwest, as well as a detailed consideration of what went on at a small Sinagua village. Using material assemblages they present a picture of social organization through successive culture phases.

Book excerpt: Mankind and lizard men have been at war for many years. Recently, there has been a truce, but peace is a brittle thing, and there are those who will not accept it. When a camp of lizards hunts too close to the humans, all hell breaks loose. An act of fear leads to a massacre of lizards and men alike. Fires burn the dead, and a lone Journeyman is sent to assess the damage. Teleth is older in years than many of his compatriots, but he is smart, brave, and has a good heart. He’s horrified when he comes upon the many, many dead but takes pause when he finds a small, abandoned lizard child. Despite its initial hostility, the lizard warms to Teleth, so he names his little friend Vankor, which means “fearsome champion.” It’s not normal for a human to befriend a lizard, so Teleth worries what will become of them both as they travel lands rife with prejudice. Seeing no other option, Teleth decides to raise young Vankor. Perhaps, their dedication to each other will change the world—or perhaps, the bloodthirsty world is not yet ready to find love amidst the hate.

Book Cornwall Walks

Download or read book Cornwall Walks written by Sue Viccars and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cornwall's coastal path gives access to many of Britain's finest marine landscapes, and a great many of the walks in this guide utilise sections of the path, which is maintained to a high standard. Two walks, starting at Polkerris and Little Petherick respectively, follow parts of the Saints' Way, which crosses Cornwall from coast to coast on a route pioneered by the early Christian missionaries. Other routes take in the ever-popular Land's End, romantic Prussia Cove (an old smugglers' haunt), and Bodmin Moor, a landscape that has altered little since the Iron Age, nearly 3,000 years ago.
