Book excerpt: In the twilight of the Renaissance, the grand duke of Tuscany-a scion of the fabled Medici family of bankers-invited foreign merchants, artisans, and ship captains to settle in his port city of Livorno. The town quickly became one of the most bustling port cities in the Mediterranean, presenting a rich tableau of officials, merchants, mariners, and slaves. Nobody could have predicted in 1600 that their activities would contribute a chapter in the history of free trade. Yet by the late seventeenth century, the grand duke's invitation had evolved into a general program of hospitality towards foreign visitors, the liberal treatment of goods, and a model for the elimination of customs duties. Livorno was the earliest and most successful example of a free port in Europe. The story of Livorno shows the seeds of liberalism emerging, not from the studies of philosophers such as Adam Smith, but out of the nexus between commerce, politics, and identity in the early modern Mediterranean.

Each area of the country has a unique and special identity so the traveler experiences a range of styles that reflects the unification of this special country and people. Visiting Italy is a unique experience for me. Its history, culture, architecture, people, and food combine to provide an extraordinary experience. My review and description of the cities I visited represents months of travel and my examination of the different aspects of each city. As I've done with regard to each city in the world about which I wrote a review, the template I adopted offers a panoramic approach to appreciate its multi-faceted presence. The first section reflects the country’s and each city’s History, followed by Jewish History and Presence, and My Visit. In March 2016, I visited Civitavecchia, a beautiful city overshadowed by Rome, but a short train ride away. I then visited Naples and Pompeii. This visit was while I was aboard the Rotterdam, a beautiful Holland America cruise ship, while on a 91-day voyage from the city of Rotterdam to the Far East. I was aboard the ship as clergy, offering me the wondrous opportunity of meeting incredible people as we voyaged through the international waterways of exotic adventure. I returned to Italy on a personal visit in April 2017. This time, I stayed in Rome, Siena, Verona, Livorno, Florence, Padua, and finally in Vicenza, staying for about a week in each city, leisurely exploring each of these beautiful cities. I hope these descriptions and reviews offer travelers the opportunity to examine these beautiful cities.

Focusing on Livornese Jewry, this book offers an alternative perspective on Jewish acculturation during the eighteenth century, and reassesses common assumptions about the interactions of Jews with outside culture and the impact of state reforms on the corporate Jewish community. Working from a vast array of previously untapped archival and literary sources, Francesca Bregoli combines cultural analysis with a study of institutional developments to investigate Jewish responses to Enlightenment thought and politics, as well as non-Jewish perceptions of Jews, through an exploration of Jewish-Christian cultural exchange, sites of sociability, and reformist policies. Mediterranean Enlightenment shows that Livornese Jewish scholars engaged with Enlightenment ideals and aspired to contribute to society at large without weakening the boundaries of traditional Jewish life. By arguing that the privileged status of Livorno Jewry had conservative rather than liberalizing effects, it also challenges the notion that economic utility facilitates Jewish integration, nuancing received wisdom about processes of emancipation in Europe.

The contents are organised in three sections: Taxonomy and Biogeography (including the morphological and genetic analyses that clarify the taxonomy and phylogeny of sturgeons, focused on those from Southern Europe), Biology and Aquaculture (where several aspects of the developmental biology, feeding, and reproduction are considered in relation to the improvement of sturgeon farming), and Recovery and Conservation (that collates and analyses different recovery research actions, the ecology of the rivers for restoration as well as the problems related to the trade of caviar).
