Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In English for the first time, a wild and darkly funny book that combines Surrealist painter Leonora Carringon's fantastical writing and illustrations for children The maverick surrealist Leonora Carrington was an extraordinary painter and storyteller who loved to make up stories and draw pictures for her children. She lived much of her life in Mexico, and her sons remember sitting in a big room whose walls were covered with images of wondrous creatures, towering mountains, and ferocious vegetation while she told fabulous and funny tales. That room was later whitewashed, but some of its wonders were preserved in the little notebook that Carrington called The Milk of Dreams. John, who has wings for ears, Humbert the Beautiful, an insufferable kid who befriends a crocodile and grows more insufferable yet, and the awesome Janzamajoria are all to be encountered in The Milk of Dreams, a book that is as unlikely, outrageous, and dreamy as dreams themselves.

Download or read book Animal Souls Speak written by Robert Shapiro and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arcturus is the name given to the star system some thirty-seven light-years from our own. It includes at least a half dozen planetary bodies and is many times larger and much older than our own star and its system. Arcturian involvement with our system began over three million years ago when a space colony--a galactic space station--was established on Velatropa 24.4, otherwise known as Mars. With its 40,000-year warm cycles, Mars provided the perfect experimental way station. If anything went wrong, at least those on the Arcturus system would not be affected--or so it was thought. Some of those in command of the Martian project had not considered carefully enough the inexorable efficacy of karma, the law of cause and effect. By the time strange events began to transpire on Mars, little did anyone on Mars or Arcturus reckon the strange consequences of forgetting about each other's mutual existence. Thus unfolds the tale of the Arcturian experimental way station, V.24.4, otherwise kno

Book excerpt: Living Earth Community: Multiple Ways of Being and Knowing is a celebration of the diversity of ways in which humans can relate to the world around them, and an invitation to its readers to partake in planetary coexistence. Innovative, informative, and highly accessible, this interdisciplinary anthology of essays brings together scholars, writers and educators across the sciences and humanities, in a collaborative effort to illuminate the different ways of being in the world and the different kinds of knowledge they entail – from the ecological knowledge of Indigenous communities, to the scientific knowledge of a biologist and the embodied knowledge communicated through storytelling. This anthology examines the interplay between Nature and Culture in the setting of our current age of ecological crisis, stressing the importance of addressing these ecological crises occurring around the planet through multiple perspectives. These perspectives are exemplified through diverse case studies – from the political and ethical implications of thinking with forests, to the capacity of storytelling to motivate action, to the worldview of the Indigenous Okanagan community in British Columbia. Living Earth Community: Multiple Ways of Being and Knowing synthesizes insights from across a range of academic fields, and highlights the potential for synergy between disciplinary approaches and inquiries. This anthology is essential reading not only for researchers and students, but for anyone interested in the ways in which humans interact with the community of life on Earth, especially during this current period of environmental emergency.
Download or read book Living Beings written by Penelope Dransart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Beings examines the vital characteristics of social interactions between living beings, including humans, other animals and trees. Many discussions of such relationships highlight the exceptional qualities of the human members of the category, insisting for instance on their religious beliefs or creativity. In contrast, the international case studies in this volume dissect views based on hierarchical oppositions between human and other living beings. Although human practices may sometimes appear to exist in a realm beyond nature, they are nevertheless subject to the pull of natural forces. These forces may be brought into prominence through a consideration of the interactions between human beings and other inhabitants of the natural world. The interplay in this book between social anthropologists, philosophers and artists cuts across species divisions to examine the experiential dimensions of interspecies engagements. In ethnographically and/or historically contextualized chapters, contributors examine the juxtaposition of human and other living beings in the light of themes such as wildlife safaris, violence, difference, mimicry, simulation, spiritual renewal, dress and language.

Book excerpt: We all have our own thoughts on society and how the world works. Most of us are so busy with the day to day living and simply don't have the time to sit down and think about it. I was one of those people who just got on with life, until one day, I was fortunate enough to have enough money to do what I myself wanted to do. For about one year I spent time drawing, painting, meeting up with friends, going out and generally having a nice relaxing time. It also provided me with time to start writing this book. As I suddenly had all this time on my hands I read a lot, researched a lot and watched many interesting films and documentaries. This in turn, got me thinking and wanting to find out for myself how it all works. I feel very blessed to have been able to do this and wish evryone would have the same opportunity in their life. So, here it is, my thoughts and findings of what for me was a very interesting journey. Hopefully it will inspire you to seek your own answers.
Download or read book Bible and Ecology written by Richard Bauckham and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this well-argued and timely book, Bauckham considers the relationship of humans to the rest of creation. He argues that there is much more to the Bible’s understanding of this relationship than the mandate of human dominion given in Genesis 1, which has too often been used as a justification for domination and exploitation of the earth’s resources. He also critiques the notion of stewardship as being on the one hand presumptuous, and on the other too general a term to explain our key responsibilities in caring for the earth. In countering this, he considers other biblical perspectives, including the book of Job, the Psalms and the Gospels, and re-evaluates the biblical tradition of ‘dominion’, in favour of a ‘community of creation’.With its clear analysis and thought-provoking conclusions, The Bible and Ecology is an essential read for anyone interested in a biblically grounded approach to ecology.

Download or read book Starting with Heidegger written by Tom Greaves and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new introduction to Heidegger, guiding the student through the overall development of his ideas. Covering all the key concepts of Heidegger's work, Starting with Heidegger provides an accessible introduction to the ideas that are embodied in his magnum opus, Being and Time . Thematically structured, the book encourages the reader to engage with Heidegger's thought, leading him or her to a more thorough understanding of the roots of his philosophical concerns. Drawing on a wide range of Heidegger's lectures and manuscripts, the book shows how Heidegger came to arrive at the existential analysis of Being and Time and how he continued to develop insights into the problems which motivated it. Crucially, contextual detail and intellectual influences, from Husserl to Nietzsche, are introduced with an eye to uncovering the basic motivations behind Heidegger's complex formulations, elucidating not only what Heidegger wrote, but how he thought philosophy should be practised. This is the ideal introduction for anyone coming to the work of this challenging thinker for the first time.
