Book excerpt: Abstract: This research aims to identify challenges that face women living with HIV in Upper Egypt in order to help policy makers and different stakeholders to overcome those challenges. Interviews with women living with HIV from different governorates in Upper Egypt were conducted. In addition, this research included interviews with national AIDS program officials and NGOs managers to obtain different perspectives about the condition of women living with HIV. Women represent half of people living with HIV around the world. The burden of disease on women is even more challenging in many countries due to gender inequality. The effect of culture in Upper Egypt on women living with HIV was an added value to this research as there is shortage in researches that tackled this problem in this particular area in Egypt. Despite efforts to fight HIV in Egypt and to reduce stigma and discrimination, women living with HIV in Upper Egypt face many challenges. What are those challenges and how can Egypt overcome them? Main findings included that women living with HIV in Upper Egypt need a stigma free reproductive health services. They need to disclose about their illness without fear of stigma. Women face many difficulties to access reproductive health services upon disclosure about their status. Women might transfer the virus to their children due to mismanagement of their cases or lack of proper services in health care provision during child birth. Moreover, there is a shortage in the services provided for PLHIV in Upper Egypt including medications' distributing centers and laboratory tests. Finally, there is a pressing social stigma against PLHIV which results in low utilization of testing services..

Book excerpt: Urban refugees in Egypt are at high risk for HIV/AIDS because of the lack of adequate health resources, social stability and the intense stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS. Based on a literature review and semi-structured interviews conducted in Cairo, Egypt, this paper uses a vulnerability perspective to examine the challenges facing HIV-positive refugees in accessing necessary medical care. The combination of policy, structural forces and social relations results in a chain of causation that marginalizes refugees in Egyptian society. These social processes results in unequal access to health resources for refugees, thereby increasing their potential exposure to HIV transmission. This contextualized analysis of vulnerability and access to medical care highlights the potential to not only address the issue of HIV/AIDS services for refugees, but also to improve the economic, social and cultural standards of living for refugees in Cairo. Therefore a multi-faceted approach is necessary in order to find comprehensive solutions to address these underlying factors.

Drawing on the experiences of women living with HIV, in addition to the analysis of the National HIV Strategic frameworks and national media press articles, this thesis traces major events related to the bio-politics of HIV in Egypt post-2011. I conducted research with mothers living with HIV to explore how they perceived their individual experiences of living with HIV within the social and political context of Egypt post-2011. The research is an attempt to unravel glimpses of the events that affected their lives in the period from 2011 until 2015 as well as to understand how they assemble the trajectories of those events and mediate their social lives. In this thesis I deploy the issue of HIV and AIDS as a prism to analyze and trace how biopower produces HIV positive subjectivities. It aspires to document as well as examine how HIV and AIDS are deployed in the social and political arena, especially since 2011. It navigates the stories of the main research interlocutors to understand how they perceive as well as negotiate the multiple faces of authorities in their lives to construct their own realities. My aim is also to understand how HIV positive subjectivities are shaped and continuously shaping the dominant discourse on HIV and the political. The discourse here is conceptualized as a totality of circulated manifestations of the thinking, speaking, acting and the knowledge of the subjects that is continuously in an unfolding process (Foucault, 1972). Hence, HIV and AIDS related events and rhetoric are orbiting within interlinked discourses of power and authorities such as the medical, the social, the religious, the economic and the political..
