Book excerpt: The study proposes a digital simulation-based workflow for assessing the energy performance of façade-integrated green walls to support the current practice of empirical knowledge-based intuitive design. The study focuses on "living walls," which are a specific type of green wall where the plant, substrate and structural support are directly integrated with the building wall. Living walls are acknowledged to reduce the energy consumption of buildings along with manifold other benefits including noise and air pollution reduction, carbon sequestration, ecological habitat support and biophilic design in cities. The majority of the research assessing the thermal performance of living walls used experimental methods or analytical mathematical models that are not suitable for the assessment of façade design variations during the iterative architectural design process. Studies prove that the thermal potential of vegetation integrated walls varies with climate type and context requiring case-by-case assessment and informed design decisions can significantly reduce building energy consumption. Due to the complex biological properties of vegetation, building information modeling (BIM) or building energy performance simulation (BEPS) programs do not yet include specific assessment tools for green walls. This limits the scope of performance-based evaluation at the early design phase. Few discrete attempts have been made to analyze the thermal performance of living walls using various digital simulation tools. In these studies, different modeling techniques are self-developed by researchers due to the lack of dedicated simulation tools. These studies are confined to simulation programs only and rarely combined with the design process or digital design platforms such as BIM or 3D modeling. The studies mostly draw observation on thermal performance based on a single or a few parameters while in case of design, various aspects need to be considered at once. Therefore, research gaps remain in incorporating those research findings with the design discipline. In this regard, within the limitations of the current simulation tools, this study adapts the 'Green-roof' module of the widely used simulation engine Energy-Plus based on previous studies as this plug-in includes plants' biological properties in the simulation and it is possible to use it in combination with digital design platforms. By simulating a test cell at first, the effects of changes in various parameters of the living walls integrated façades such as the orientation, placement, coverage of the living wall and relevant other detail properties such as foliage leaf area index, substrate thicknesses, bare wall material, etc. are documented and observations are made. The documentation will help architects understand how various parameter changes impact energy consumption and what parameters they need to test using a simulation tool for higher thermal performance. A workflow is proposed from this which assists in choosing a high-performing design solution through a comparative analysis of the facades' energy consumptions at an early design phase for a context-specific design case. The aim is to incorporate scientific research findings with the design process using digital design and simulation tools. The workflow can be updated through future research with the advent of further developed dedicated simulation tools for nature-based design.
