Book Historical Fiction for Children

Download or read book Historical Fiction for Children written by Fiona M. Collins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical fiction has a great deal to offer as its readers and devotees have always known. The time is ripe however for the historical novel and historical picture book to be promoted more emphatically so that many more are made aware of the delight and learning to be found in the genre. The editors of this book invited authors, academic writers and teachers to reflect on the nature, scope, range and richness of historical fiction for children. What is collected here provides an overview of the field, a consideration of significant writers of historical fiction from the nineteenth century onwards, a sense of the various historical eras commonly explored (Stone Age to World War 2), a discussion of commonly raised issues, themes and topics such as child labor, slavery and migration, and a forum for writers to reveal their insights into the writing of historical fiction. Julian Atterton, Berlie Doherty, Michael Foreman and Philip Pullman have made contributions. It provides evidence of children and students engaging creatively with historical fiction.

The aim of this textbook is to enable student teachers to learn to teach history in a way that pupils will find interesting, enjoyable and purposeful. It incorporates a wide range of ideas about the teaching of history with practical suggestions for classroom practice. This is the third edition of a textbook that has established itself as the leading text for student teachers of history. It has been thoroughly updated, with a revised chapter on the use of ICT in history teaching and major new sections in the areas of inclusion, resources, assessment and professional development. It provides an array of references and materials that give a sound theoretical foundation for the teaching of history, including weblinks to further resources. A range of tasks enable students to put their learning into practice in the classroom. The book also provides reference and access to a wide range of recent and relevant research in the field of history education, which will be of use to student teachers pursuing courses that have a Masters Level component. Book Use of Language Across the Secondary Curriculum

Download or read book Use of Language Across the Secondary Curriculum written by Eve Bearne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational policy is becoming more concerned with the need to ensure that people leave school or college fully literate. We need good oral communicators in the workplace, and being able to understand and respond to different kinds of language is vital in today's society. Included here is a detailed and highly readable account of the ways in which language affects every aspect of study - it crosses all subject boundaries, yet it is commonly seen as the sole responsibility of the English teacher to manage this area of the curriculum. The first section of the book looks at the ideology behind language, while the second section considers how schools and local authorities have tackled improving levels of literacy. The third section is concerned with practical advice on how to teach language most successfully, irrespective of subject. Latter sections focus on developing a critical eye, and supporting pupils who have particular needs.

Book Echoing Events

  • Publisher : V&R unipress
  • Release : 2022-12-12
  • ISBN : 3737014507

Download or read book Echoing Events written by Tina van der Vlies and published by V&R unipress. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Echoing Events” questions the perpetuation, actualization, and canonization of national narratives in English and Dutch history textbooks, wide-reaching media that tendentially inspire a sense of meaning, memory, and thus also identity. The longitudinal study begins in the 1920s, when the League of Nations launched several initiatives to reduce strong nationalistic visions in textbooks, and ends in the new millennium with the revival of national narratives in both countries. The analysis shows how and why textbook authors have narrated different histories – which vary in terms of context, epoch, and place – as ‘echoing events’ by using recurring plots and the same combinations of historical analogies. This innovative and original study thus investigates from a new angle the resistance of national narratives to change.
