Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judy Gray was four when the pain first struck. As mysterious as it was excruciating, Judy's anguish confounded the local doctor, who advised her mother to apply liniment. It was not until Judy was a teenager that another doctor informed her aunt of the real cause of Judy's agony - something called sickle cell anemia. The social mores of that time, however, dictated that adults discussed nothing of substance with children. So Judy learned little about her ailment other than it could cause her to die. A frightened Judy simply put sickle cell disease out of her mind and suffered in silence as she went on with her life. Readers will follow Judy's journey through college, a teaching career, a short-lived marriage, and the raising of a daughter while enduring severe pain episodes. All the while, exhaustion was her constant companion. Living with Sickle Cell Disease: The Struggle to Survive is a story of Judy Gray Johnson's perseverance in the face of living with a little-understood chronic illness.

Book excerpt: Sickle Cell Anemia is a horrible disease to an outsider looking in. However, to me, it is no different than any other life-threatening disease! The only difference is Sickle Cell Anemia does not get the much-needed recognition it truly deserves. People know little or nothing about the disease because it is not seen as important like other well-known diseases are. I personally have an issue with that problem because I have Sickle Cell Anemia, and I have always been a lifelong advocate for it! Sickle Cell Anemia has affected me as well as many of my family members. There are countless other people in the world who also suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia. I decided to write my personal story because living with this disease has been quite a challenging journey for me, from my childhood until my middle-aged years. I have had both some good days and some bad ones, but God has kept me. So, I won’t complain! I feel as if I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster that has taken me on some highs and lows. It seems like I have been on this ride a million times over, and it simply will not stop. Despite experiencing some periodic turbulence, I have still managed to have some great times on this roller coaster ride! Therefore, I can honestly say, “It’s okay! I’m going to ride this ‘til the wheels fall off.” Plus, I know God will never, ever give me or anyone else more than we can handle! I have also learned how to weather the storms over the years. Early on, I lived my life worried every day because I was told that I was going to die at the age of 17. Accordingly, I lived with that expectation until I surpassed that deadline. Ever since then, I have been living my life without the constant fear of dying at such a tender age. Life is precious, and I live each day to the fullest! Sickle Cell Anemia is only a part of me; it is not the total sum of who I am!

Book Understanding Sickle Cell Disease

Download or read book Understanding Sickle Cell Disease written by Miriam Bloom and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although more is known about sickle cell disease than about any other inherited disease, no cure for it exists. In America alone, about one in 375 who are of African ancestry is born with sickle cell disease. A smaller number of Americans descended from families from the Mediterranean area, the Middle East, and India also are affected. In addition, about eight percent of black Americans who do not suffer from the disease itself carry the gene for it that can be transmitted to their children. Sickle cell disease is of enormous biological, social, and historic importance. It was first described in medical literature almost a century ago. Improvements during the past two decades in our understanding of the disease and in medical care are permitting those afflicted to live longer, more comfortable and more productive lives. This book was written for all who are interested in this disease--those who have it, their families, the carriers of the sickle cell gene, teachers, and those who wish to update their information about it. This overview of sickle cell disease explains what it is and how it is inherited, as well as the relationship between the sickle cell gene and its geographic origins, the way the gene has been spread throughout history, and the effect of sickle cell hemoglobin on red blood cells that carry it. Understanding Sickle Cell Disease describes the variety of symptoms in both children and adults and details the emotional aspects of the disease. Of particular interest is a chapter on the care, especially the home care, of those who are affected. This book explains how it is possible today for couples carrying the genes to raise families free of the disease. Although there is no known cure for sickle cell disease, there is little doubt that one will ultimately be devised. This volume surveys current research efforts and the promise they hold.

Download or read book I Am a Living Testimony written by Bolaniran Deji-Adeyale and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked what my reason for telling this story is, I said I only want to inspire and encourage other people facing the samechallenge, make them live life to the fullest with the people they love. Encourage them to love, laugh, play and share like they were as fit as a fiddle. There's a good that has come out of my experience with sickle-cell anaemia, and that's the privilege to counsel and be a muse of hope to children with the disorder. Nothing beats the joy of earning their parents' trust in this regard. Trust me.So, I thought "why not write my experience, so I can reach a larger audience, and spread this hope?" Why not reach other Sickle Cell Warriors with this one message: the doctor's report doesn't define you. Rather, embracing God's word for your life is, of all things, most important. I am a living witness to this! We are overcomers...we are warriors.... weare survivors!"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah29:11).Furthermore, sickle cell patients are not abnormal people, the illness is not a curse and it is wrong to believe that investing in a child with the disorder is a waste of financial resources. With access to quality care, the symptoms can be controlled and disease complications managed such that sickle cell patients can live normally, even to old age. It is this positive message that I am so happy to share with my fellow survivors and the world: that they, too, can be all they want to be in life. Finally, this book is driven by a deep sense of gratitude for life and is a call of hope to all Sickle Cell Warriors to takethe life they have been given and make the most of it. For as long as there is breath in man, there is a bigger picturealready painted that in which there are no limitations to what can be achieved in between the doctor's visits and frightening episodes that leave you wishing you could do more.Of course, the challenges exist. And, for people like us, our life is rife with them, but everything works out an awesome victory for us, by God himself. Come to think of it? Without these obstacles, we'll never discover our incredible ability tobeat them, and come out dancing still? If God is by your side, you will beat any challenge.

Book The Real Life Stories Of Sickle Cell A Global Collaboration

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's deemed the world's most common genetic disorder, but why is sickle cell disease still not fully understood in communities where it's very prevalent. The Real-Life Stories of Sickle Cell - A Global Collaboration presents stories from different parts of the world to enlighten us about the effects of this condition. Stories from sickle cell warriors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates capture these people's understanding and awareness of Sickle Cell Disease. You will read stories of hope, resilience, frustration, and sadness as we strive to bring these stories to the world. Although being the most common disorder, what this project taught us was that even people living with sickle cell disease do not get adequate treatment in most parts of the world. Sickle cell warriors are still stigmatised in different parts of the world. That sickle cell warriors would rather hide from peers or employers that they are affected, fearing the treatment they may receive. We have learned of warriors bearly getting adequate treatment because it's simply not available in their area. These stories will give you that understanding of how much we still need to do as a sickle cell community, to double our efforts to support people impacted from different parts of the world, especially developing countries.
