Book Double Lives

Download or read book Double Lives written by Helen McCarthy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Fabulous' - The Times 'A milestone in women's history' - Observer 'Groundbreaking ... a fascinating read' - Herald In Britain today, three-quarters of mothers are in employment and paid work is an unremarkable feature of women's lives after childbirth. Yet a century ago, working mothers were in the minority, excluded altogether from many occupations, whilst their wage-earning was widely perceived as a social ill. In Double Lives, Helen McCarthy accounts for this remarkable transformation and the momentous consequences it has had for Britain. Recovering the everyday worlds of working mothers, this groundbreaking history forces us not only to re-evaluate the past, but to ask anew how current attitudes towards mothers in the workplace have developed and how far we have to go. 'Impressive and nuanced' - Guardian 'Brilliant' - Literary Review

Book Lives Lived Lives Imagined

Download or read book Lives Lived Lives Imagined written by Sabrina Reed and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perceptive, controversial, topical, and achingly funny, Miriam Toews’s books have earned her a place at the forefront of Canadian literature. In this first monograph on Toews’s work, Sabrina Reed examines the interplay of trauma and resilience in the author’s fiction. Reed skillfully demonstrates how Toews situates resilience across key themes, including: the home as both a source of trauma and an inspiration for resilient action; the road trip as a search for resolution and redemption; and the reframing of the Mennonite diaspora as an escape from patriarchal oppression. The deaths by suicide of Toews’s father and sister stand out as the most shocking and tragic of the author’s biographical details, and Reed explores Toews’s use of autofiction as a reparative gesture in the face of this trauma. Written in an accessible style that will appeal to both scholars and devotees of Toews’s work, Lives Lived, Lives Imagined is a timely examination of Toews’s oeuvre and a celebration of fiction’s ability to simultaneously embody compassion and anger, joy and sadness, and to brave the personal and communal oppressions of politics, religion, family, society, and mental illness.

Book Bird Lives

  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Bird Lives written by Bill Moody and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a limited time only! Purchase BIRD LIVES! for just $2.99 and get a link to download the first book in this series, SOLO HAND, for FREE! For jazz pianist Evan Horne, things couldn’t be better: His hand has healed, he’s getting gigs at some of the Southern California clubs, and he’s even been approached about a recording contract. He couldn’t have planned it any better. What he never considered, though, was that a murderer was going to add some startling improvisations… The dead sax player was someone many in the traditional jazz community wouldn’t miss; he was, after all, just another Kenny G clone, someone capitalizing on an uneducated public’s willingness to support “smooth jazz” while the heirs to the tradition and music of Charlie Parker—“Bird” to the real fans—were starved for work. It is immediately clear to Horne that the murderer must have known that Parker was one of the greatest and most influential men to wet a reed. That’s the only reason the words “Bird Lives” were scrawled on the wall above the body, the same words that appeared on walls all over the world after Parker’s death…and that soon appear next to a second corpse. With a tie-in like that, it is no surprise that the cops turn to Evan; he’d helped them before when death stalked the music community. This time, though, helping could cost him his future…and his life. Praise for BIRD LIVES! “The jazz esoterica and the unusual serial killer should keep Evan Horne fans reading.” —Publishers Weekly “The witty premise and all the jazz talk will more than satisfy series fans.” —Booklist

Book Stolen Lives

Download or read book Stolen Lives written by Sietske Altink and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dancers/Hostesses required for top cabaret nightclubs both here and overseas. No experience necessary. Mega bucks to be earned. Telephone. . . ” Would you answer an ad like this? Thousands of women do and fall victim to the illegal trafficking in women by organized crime syndicates. Driven by the desire to start a career or escape poverty, women migrate in search of work and a better life for themselves and for their families. For some, this search is the beginning of a nightmare experience. From “hotel receptionist” to nightclub “dancer” to “domestic worker,” Stolen Lives: Trading Women Into Sex and Slavery exposes how women are hired in their country of origin, transported, left without money, passports, or permits, and become trapped into prostitution or domestic slavery. Branded as illegal aliens and marooned in a culture they don’t understand, they have nowhere to go and no one to help them. With personal testimony from women caught in the trafficking web, Stolen Lives reveals the violent inner workings of international crime networks, the routes and methods involved, and how trafficking gangs are able to circumvent the law. The trade in women is one of the most shameful abuses of human rights, yet it continues to be ignored by national governments. Stolen Lives confronts the hidden scandal of global trafficking which exploits women as they attempt to emancipate themselves.

Book BROKEN LIVES

Download or read book BROKEN LIVES written by Teresa Devereux and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just like any other mother, Samantha adores her two little girls who are everything that matters to her in the world. Her own childhood was unhappy with an abusive, neglectful and inadequate mother... Tormented by her childhood memories she struggles to function as an adult and finds comfort in alcohol until it begins to destroy her life. April Gardiner is the social worker who strives to help Samantha to hold on to her children whilst her priority is to keep them safe. At the same time as dealing with the trauma and sufferings of the families she works with and making life changing decisions for children, April is trying to deal with her own personal issues which are impacting on her life. Both women had a similar start in life, but their personal childhood experiences determined the adults they ultimately became. The story raises issues around disadvantage and describes how the state and government ideology perpetuates underprivilege and inequality, making it almost impossible for those caught up in the cycle to avoid a steep spiral downwards. Whilst the story provides an insight into children and families social work and the dilemmas and life changing decisions that are part and parcel of their everyday work, the main theme of the story is how the luck of who you are born to, will determine who you later become, and the steep uphill struggle faced by the unfortunate children who are born in underprivileged circumstances and deprivation. Although there is sadness, there are also happy outcomes for some and a spattering of humour throughout. My aim was to raise laughter as well as tears.
