Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Questions: Studies in Nature and Grace IT is in behalf of friends met along the way in the journey of life, - friends both lay and clerical; those filled with faith and those troubled with doubts, -that these discourses are published. One of the thoughts that come to us with peculiar sadness when in our experience we reach the borders of old age, and one whose prediction we would gladly change if we could, is that we must be soon forgotten. No doubt this feeling so universal is prophetic, is one of the promises that God has given us of an immortal life a pledge that our names are written on an imperishable record. But when we see, as I have seen here amid these hills and valleys, an entire generation pass away, certainly the desire to bequeath some thought or act that may inspire, admonish, guide, or cheer those we love and leave, this feeling on the part of parent, pastor, and friend is not vain, but expresses our loyalty to the claims of affection and duty. Book Fundamental Questions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamental Questions Classic Reprint written by Henry Churchill King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamental Questions This volume aims to deal, in not too technical fashion, with some of the most fundamental questions, theoretical and practical, which are involved in the Christian view of God and the world. It is naturally intended, thus, both to answer difficulties and to suggest lines of thought which may help to confirm and to clarify Christian faith. Its chapters take up in order the perennial problem for all ideal views, - the question of suffering and sin; the difficulties for any religious view which gather around prayer, - the central relation of revelation and response between God and men; the question of how we may best think of Christ, - the central fact of the Christian religion; and then, in the light of these conclusions, four large problems for Christian thought and life: the questions of life's fundamental decision, of life's fundamental paradox of liberty and law, of Christian unity, and of Christianity as a world religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Issues of Life Deriving from our religion the help that it is able to give us. To fancy therefore that we have outgrown and exhausted Christ is a vain imagination, especially if we compare His sanity and His gigantic moral strength with the bloodthirsty or the puer ile substitutes proposed by men who have rejected His counsels of love and service. As a matter of fact it is impossible for the best intellect among us to draw the faint shadowy outline of the religious teacher Who should be able to succeed Him. Later and wiser generations of men will read our estimates of Christianity with a smile, and if we are still capable of blushing we shall blush for them. The present condition of the world, far from disproving the truth Of Christianity, only shows how fearful is the penalty we pay for contemning it. It is not by departing from Jesus Christ but by. Book Live Questions for Debate

Download or read book Live Questions for Debate written by Guy Vernon Bennett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Live Questions for Debate: For the Schools of California The greatest profit from debate is to be gained only when the subjects are adapted to the age and grade of intelligence of the participants. I have, therefore, arranged the questions by grades, beginning with extremely simple ones in the sixth year. Some attempt has also been made to arrange the questions in each year in the order of difficulty of making preparation - a difficulty due either to the depth of the question or to the scarcity of sources of information. Some of the questions in the earlier grades are not in the strictest sense debatable. But two good habits will be formed by the pupil - first, of controlling himself before an audience; second, of marshalling his facts and figures on one side of a question. The teacher, knowing her pupils, is of course the safest guide in assigning questions. Not all children in the sixth grade could debate even the simple questions I have proposed for that year. Grading differs somewhat in different communities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Prepared origin ally for the ear, they are lacking in much that the eye demands; but the interest awakened by their delivery was so deep and earnest that, in response to the kindly suggestion of some who heard them, they are now given to a larger circle, in the humble hope that they may help in at least a feeble way to comfort those Who mourn, and strength en such as be of a doubtful mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Live Questions The questions discussed in this volume are all of vital interest to humanity, and upon the proper solution of some of them depends the fate of the republic. While some of these papers and speeches have been published in one way or another it is believed that 'by putting them in a more enduring form I can assist the patriotic student and thus render a service to my country. In discussing the tariff, the money question and government by injunction the same illustrations are used in different speeches, which-would be objectionable if the book were a treatise to be read consecutively, but I have concluded that in this case it would be best to have each speech as nearly com plete as possible. Consequently the short repetitions have beeii al lowed to stand. Justice requires me to state that in the original preparation of the matter in this book I have been greatly assisted by the unerring judgment and wise criticism of Mrs. Altgeld. Through her influence'some of the articles were softened in tone and others were changed in character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Celebration of Discipline

Download or read book Celebration of Discipline written by Richard J. Foster and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 1988-10-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty years since its publication, Celebration of Discipline has helped over a million seekers discover a richer spiritual life infused with joy, peace, and a deeper understanding of God. For this special twentieth anniversary edition, Richard J. Foster has added an introduction, in which he shares the story of how this beloved and enduring spiritual guidebook came to be. Hailed by many as the best modern book on Christian spirituality, Celebration of Discipline explores the "classic Disciplines," or central spiritual practices, of the Christian faith. Along the way, Foster shows that it is only by and through these practices that the true path to spiritual growth can be found. Dividing the Disciplines into three movements of the Spirit, Foster shows how each of these areas contribute to a balanced spiritual life. The inward Disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study, offer avenues of personal examination and change. The outward Disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service, help prepare us to make the world a better place. The corporate Disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and celebration, bring us nearer to one another and to God. Foster provides a wealth of examples demonstrating how these Disciplines can become part of our daily activities-and how they can help us shed our superficial habits and "bring the abundance of God into our lives." He offers crucial new insights on simplicity, demonstrating how the biblical view of simplicity, properly understood and applied, brings joy and balance to our inward and outward lives and "sets us free to enjoy the provision of God as a gift that can be shared with others." The discussion of celebration, often the most neglected of the Disciplines, shows its critical importance, for it stands at the heart of the way to Christ. Celebration of Discipline will help motivate Christians everywhere to embark on a journey of prayer and spiritual growth.
