Download or read book Living Parables written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Parables: Today’s Versions presents parables in updated language and images. Biblical parables are culture-bound; they are embedded in images that were well-known to a Jewish culture. Jesus was a first-century, Jewish, Galilean peasant, and his concerns, speech, and idioms belong to that culture. His milieu is far removed from ours today. The images found in parables carried meaning that is lost on modern audiences. A simple example will suffice. In the Jewish world of the first century, leaven was considered to be corrupt because people did not understand how bacteria worked. On the most important day of the year—Passover—bread had to be unleavened, uncorrupted. Today, no one thinks of yeast in that way. If we want bread dough to rise, we need to leaven it. Therefore, what image might Jesus use today that carries some of the same cultural connotations that yeast or leaven carried in his world? Might he speak about Ebola virus or radioactivity? Those images carry the same negativity that yeast or leaven bore in his world. This book contains parables found in the New Testament in a form that Jesus might tell today.

Download or read book Hell s Best Kept Secret written by Ray Comfort and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many souls have you won to Christ? How many are still walking with the Lord? All, some, a few? The facts are: Evangelical success is at an all-time low. We’re producing more backsliders than true converts. The fall-away rate—from large crusades to local churches—is between 80 to 90 percent. Why are so many unbelievers turning away from the message of the gospel? Doesn’t the Bible tell us how to bring sinners to true repentance? If so, where have we missed it? The answer may surprise you. One hundred years ago, Satan buried the crucial key needed to unlock the unbeliever’s heart. Now Ray Comfort boldly breaks away from modern tradition and calls for a return to biblical evangelism. If you’re experiencing evangelical frustration over lost souls, unrepentant sinners, and backslidden “believers,” then look no further. This radical approach could be the missing dimension needed to win our generation to Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication theory provides a compelling way to understand how people of faith can and should work together in today's tumultuous world. In A Communication Perspective on Interfaith Dialogue, fifteen authors present their experiences and analyses of interfaith dialogue, and contextualize interfaith work within the frame of rhetorical and communication studies. While the focus is on the Abrahamic faiths, these essays also include discussion of Hinduism and interracial faith efforts. Each chapter incorporates communication theories that bring clarity to the practices and problems of interfaith communication. Where other interfaith books provide theological, political, or sociological insights, this volume is committed to the perspectives contained in communication scholarship. Interfaith dialogue is best imagined as an organic process, and it does not require theological heavyweights gathered for academic banter. As such, this volume focuses on the processes and means by which interfaith meaning is produced.
Download or read book Proclaiming the Parables written by Thomas G. Long and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Proclaiming the Parables, noted preacher and scholar Thomas G. Long moves away from past treatment of the parables primarily as literary devices and moves toward an emphasis on their theological impact as pointers to the kingdom of God. While the parables are indeed significant poetic literary creations that have enchanted readers over the centuries, their main power, he claims, lies in their disclosure of the kingdom of God, which is not merely an idea, nor even just a complex symbol with generative and centrifugal force, but an event: the inbreaking of the life of God into human history and experience. Long sees parables not merely as creative figures of speech but as GPS devices taking hearers to those places where the event of God is happening all around us. This book provides two chapters for each synoptic Gospel. The first focuses on the Gospel as a whole and the parables’ place in it, and the second provides preachers and teachers with detailed exegetical and homiletical commentary for each major parable in that Gospel. Two introductory chapters additionally situate this book in the history and theology of the parables’ interpretation and address questions that preachers have about preaching the parables. Preachers who consult this volume will be informed about each major parable, guided through the controversies regarding interpretation, and stimulated to preach on the parable in fresh, faithful, and creative ways.
Download or read book Life of Christ written by Robert Geis and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life of Christ bridges the gap between commentaries and devotional accounts of Christ’s ministry. Applying the requisite analytical tools, it addresses the question, is His life worth studying? The Resurrection event would confirm it is, as would the Gospel miracle accounts—neither of which, Geis argues, skeptical response disproves. Salvation history necessitates the reality of Mary’s virginity, which the author develops lexically and theologically. Jesus’ teachings and parables bring out a Christ Whose moral precepts are rooted in His Divinity and not in western philosophic nostrums. Geis’ discussion of Christ on marriage and His commandment of love sharpens this observation with lexical application. He also addresses the inconsistent objectives and circular reasoning of various exegetical schools, which have no place in a study of the Gospels.
