Mummy Sylvia was going to give a big party to celebrate Ruth’s birthday and a number of guests were to be invited, amongst them the classroom staff. At this point, Irene started asking Ruth whether she wanted to invite Duncan. Ruth signed no. Irene repeated verbally Ruth’s sign. No, then, shall we invite Jasmine? No again. Shall we invite Irene? No also. Shall we invite Ritienne? Again a negative answer. Shall we invite Joanne? Yes. Irene said: you only want Joanne at your party? And Ruth put her hand in front of her chest and laughed, moving her right leg in the air, an action which she normally does when enjoying herself. The teaching staff were suddenly involved and very interested in this play and asked Irene to go through the story with Ruth all over again. They suggested that this time Irene should change the sequence of their names recounted to Ruth. And so she did. But once more Ruth only invited Joanne for her birthday party. The whole process was repeated several times, still with Joanne being the only person chosen from the school staff. The teaching staff now was participating and commenting on Ruth’s responses. They tried to reason with Ruth in vain and persuade her in various ways to change her mind. Their arguments were similar to the following: You say no to Jasmine, but she is the one who escorts you home everyday – now is that fair? And Duncan, who loves you so much and spends so much time with you – don’t you want to invite him to your party? The staff members became concerned at Ruth’s refusals and not a little offended. There were moments when Joanne was trying to excuse herself and explain why she thought that Ruth would choose her. She tried to convince the others that Ruth was only joking, that in reality she does want to invite all of them... (p.140) This book addresses the question of agency that children with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) have in educational contexts. When children have such severe impairment, the idea of their agency often does not cross the mind of adults around them. An author has won his spurs, his public know and love him, and he can then, if he will, talk to them in print as he might chat with friends. Trivial subjects become important because he chooses to write about them. He is at ease with his readers, so much so that he can drop all formality and discuss questions of the day, or tell them what he saw in a morning walk, or what he thinks on this or that literary subject, in much the same tone of voice that he might discuss the same things at his breakfast-table. It must be a pleasure to do this. It must be enjoyable to feel that one has the right to ramble from one topic to another, unchecked by the question which confronts a young author whether the topic of which he writes is “ timely" or “ vital." In the hands of a master, any subject is both timely and vital. He may write about that which interests himself, and he may be sure it will interest others. In his book 'Literature and Life', Mr. Howells has allowed himself all latitude in the choice of the subjects of the essays which compose the books. Lest some readers should not understand exactly what motive threw some random impressions of the horse show and an essay on the relation of the young contributor to the editor between the same covers, Mr. Howells has explained in his preface: “ I have never been able to see much difference between what seemed to me Literature and what seemed to me Life. . . . Out of this way of thinking and feeling about these two great things, about Literature and Life, there may have arisen a confusion as to which is which. But I do not wish to part them, and in their union I have found since I learned my letters a joy in them both which I hope will last till I forget my letters." The joy which Mr. Howells has felt in “ these two great things," he has conveyed in his writing. One feels that it was work which it gave him pleasure to do. It is one of those books where the author permits one to make his acquaintance; as he lingers over the book, the reader receives the impression that he had listened to someone talking rather than that he had been reading a printed page. It is certain that Mr. Howells is one of the few writers who can produce such work. These essays approach in spirit and in form the French feuilleton which, in the hands of such men as Anatole France, has attained such perfection.

Today they call themselves Uyghurs, and they have cultivated a sense of history and identity that challenges Beijing’s official national narrative. Rian Thum argues that the roots of this history run deeper than recent conflicts, to a time when manuscripts and pilgrimage dominated understandings of the past. Beyond broadening our knowledge of tensions between the Uyghurs and the Chinese government, this meditation on the very concept of history probes the limits of human interaction with the past. Uyghur historical practice emerged from the circulation of books and people during the Qing Dynasty, when crowds of pilgrims listened to history readings at the tombs of Islamic saints. Over time, amid long journeys and moving rituals, at oasis markets and desert shrines, ordinary readers adapted community-authored manuscripts to their own needs. In the process they created a window into a forgotten Islam, shaped by the veneration of local saints. Partly insulated from the rest of the Islamic world, the Uyghurs constructed a local history that is at once unique and assimilates elements of Semitic, Iranic, Turkic, and Indic traditions—the cultural imports of Silk Road travelers. In the first book to examine disruption in American life from a cultural rather than a psychological perspective, Gay Becker follows hundreds of people to find out what they do after something unexpected occurs. Starting with bodily distress, she shows how individuals recount experiences of disruption metaphorically, drawing on important cultural themes to help them reestablish order and continuity in their lives. Through vivid and poignant stories of people from different walks of life who experience different types of disruptions, Becker examines how people rework their ideas about themselves and their worlds, from the meaning of disruption to the meaning of life itself. Becker maintains that to understand disruption, we must also understand cultural definitions of normalcy. She questions what is normal for a family, for health, for womanhood and manhood, and for growing older. In the United States, where life is expected to be orderly and predictable, disruptions are particularly unsettling, she contends. And, while continuity in life is an illusion, it is an effective one because it organizes people's plans and expectations.
