He went through what many people do--get a good education (IIT, Delhi, Topper, Iran Centre for Management Studies, Tehran, an affiliate of the Harvard University Business School, MBA, with Distinction), tasted material success, went through a phase of being known and recognised, travelled the world and observed people, customs and human interrelationships. However, fundamental questions about life and its reality kept surfacing repeatedly. For what ultimate purpose does one take any action? Sensing that all the trappings of success in the world did not satisfy what he was (and every human being seemed to be) striving for, he started making serious enquiries. Using the excellent training he had received from formal education as well as what he learnt from his observations of life, he tried to find the answers. He asked many famous and erudite people, read what great thinkers had to say about the subject matter, discussed with others who too were seeking answers; all of which drove to him turn to Indian scriptures, sastra. He followed it up until he reached a traditional guru who could unfold the secrets of the self, using the words of the sastra. He spent three and a half years living with and learning from his guru, Poojya Swami Dayananda Saraswati at a gurukulam (a traditional place of learning where students live with the guru) in Anaikatti in Southern India. Ganesh now lives a life of study and teaching, and helping anyone who approaches him with a problem, or with a commitment to learn.

Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

While Schweitzer made numerous significant contributions to an incredible diversity of fields - medicine, music, biblical studies, philosophy and theology - he regarded Reverence for Life as his greatest contribution and the one by which he most wanted to be remembered. Yet this concept has been the subject of a range of distortions and misunderstandings, both academic and popular. In this book, Ara Barsam provides a new interpretation of Schweitzer's reverence and shows how it emerged from his studies of German philosophy, Indian religions, and his biblical scholarship on Jesus and Paul. By throwing light on the origin and development of Schweitzer's thought, Barsam leads his readers to a closer appreciation of the contribution that reverence makes to current ethical issues. Whereas previous commentators have focused on "reverence for life" as a philosophical ethic located in that tradition, this book demonstrates that it is in fact Schweitzer's theology that provides the hitherto undiscerned foundation for his ethic. Petrie's title was stated by Meno in Plato's dialogue of that name: "A man cannot enquire about that which he knows or about that which he does not know; for if he knows, he has no need to enquire; and if not, he cannot; for he does not know the very subject about which he is to enquire." Petrie argues that Meno's dilemma poses the fundamental epistemological question for education, "How is learning possible?" He examines a variety of familiar approaches to learning, from the open classroom to back-to-basics, and finds that each of these approaches attempts to grasp one horn of the dilemma to the exclusion of the other. The examination of previous attempts to resolve the dilemma of enquiry and learning prepares the way for Petrie's proposed solution. He defines learning as an adaptation of thought and action to the demands of the natural and social world. This process has two major components, assimilation and accommodation, corresponding to the two traditional ways of attacking the dilemma. Assimilation is explained using the insights of [control] systems theory, while results in evolutionary epistemology are brought to bear on the question of accommodation. Petrie shows that only a reflective equilibrium between assimilation and accommodation will allow for a resolution of the Meno dilemma. In the course of his presentation the author challenges a number of educational dogmas, including the beliefs that clear and unambiguous goals can be stated for learning; that theory can be "applied" to practice; that "subjective" tests are inferior to "objective" tests; and that the intelligence of a child makes a difference to educational policy. The book outlines new approaches to commonplace educational phenomena such as testing and to radical phenomena such as conversion experiences. It makes novel practical suggestions for the use of activity, perceptual training, and metaphor in a variety of learning situations.

An intensely clinical work, Ritual and Spontaneity in the Psychoanalytic Process forges a new understanding of the curative possibilities that grow out of the tensions, the choices, and the constraints inhering in the intimate encounter of a psychoanalyst and a patient.
