This book was released on 2008-03-15 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a review of the current potential of Earth Observations that devotes particular attention to the challenges posed by the European Seas. The assessment of surface parameters by means of passive techniques – which measure reflected visible and near-infrared sunlight, or surface emissions in the thermal infrared or microwave spectral regions – is addressed. Active techniques – which use transmitted impulses of visible or microwave radiation – are covered as well.

Book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space

Download or read book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space (National Academies Press, 2018) provides detailed guidance on how relevant federal agencies can ensure that the United States receives the maximum benefit from its investments in Earth observations from space, while operating within realistic cost constraints. This short booklet, designed to be accessible to the general public, provides a summary of the key ideas and recommendations from the full decadal survey report.

Book excerpt: This 592-page spiral-bound reference provides a baseline of information for all those involved with managing living marine resources in California and chronicles changes that have occurred in many of the state’s fisheries. Organized by marine ecosystems: bays and estuaries, nearshore and offshore. Includes illustrated species descriptions with details of biological knowledge, fishery history, landings data, population status and references. Also includes sections on marine birds and mammals and appendices containing management considerations (by species), a glossary of technical terms and acronyms and fishing gear illustrations. Jointly produced by the California Sea Grant Extension Program and the California Department of Fish and Game following the passage of the Marine Life Protection Act in January 1999.

Book NOAA Fisheries Data Acquisition Plan

Download or read book NOAA Fisheries Data Acquisition Plan written by United States. National Marine Fisheries Service and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "NOAA Fisheries is charged with stewardship of the Nation’s living marine resources through science-based conservation and management and promotion of the health of their environment. At-sea research and monitoring is the foundation upon which stewardship is based. This report responds to OMB’s request for a data acquisition plan to outline how NOAA Fisheries’ data requirements will be met over the next five years. The report deals with the interface of three highly dynamic systems: marine resources and their environment, the science and technology used to understand and manage them, and the policy arena that directs management and distributes fiscal resources. Linkages among these systems are robust; changes in one greatly influence the status of the others. Good planning is essential to the success of any mission, but planning for the future in this dynamic environment is particularly challenging. This Data Acquisition Plan (Plan) describes NOAA Fisheries’ approach to provide the best possible information upon which to manage the nation’s living marine resources"--Executive summary.

Book Living Marine Resources and Their Sustainable Development

Download or read book Living Marine Resources and Their Sustainable Development written by J. F. Caddy and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides a broad perspective on issues related to living marine resources, their environment and management in the post-UNCED context provided by Agenda 21 and the Cancun Conference. The document begins with a sectorial discussion of sustainable development of living resources of nearshore and estuarine, semi-enclosed seas, coastal and shelf waters, the high seas and Antarctic waters. Constraints on harvesting, impacts of marine pollution, and potentials for further development of resources are addressed. Each section concludes with a discussion of elements that can be included in a programme for addressing resource management, and provides a list of references on key literature related to the themes discussed, and a series of annexes which provide a glossary of key concepts, list of acronyms, list of fisheries commissions, International Organizations concerned with marine affairs, excerpts from conventions and other international agreements relating to living marine resources and their environment.

Download or read book Marine Protected Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the ocean-and the resources within-seem limitless, there is clear evidence that human impacts such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution disrupt marine ecosystems and threaten the long-term productivity of the seas. Declining yields in many fisheries and decay of treasured marine habitats, such as coral reefs, has heightened interest in establishing a comprehensive system of marine protected areas (MPAs)-areas designated for special protection to enhance the management of marine resources. Therefore, there is an urgent need to evaluate how MPAs can be employed in the United States and internationally as tools to support specific conservation needs of marine and coastal waters. Marine Protected Areas compares conventional management of marine resources with proposals to augment these management strategies with a system of protected areas. The volume argues that implementation of MPAs should be incremental and adaptive, through the design of areas not only to conserve resources, but also to help us learn how to manage marine species more effectively.
