Book Living Historical Farms Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book Living Historical Farms Handbook Classic Reprint written by John T. Schlebecker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Historical Farms Handbook On living historical farms men farm as they once did during some specific time in the past. The farms have tools and equipment like those once used, and they raise the same types of livestock and plants used during the specified era. The operations are carried on in the presence of visitors. The interest in such farms has resulted in the forming of the Association for Living Historical Farms and Agricultural Museums to which individuals and institutions may belong. Many of those engaged in the creating of living historical farms are starting fresh, with neither personal nor institutional experience to guide them. This handbook is intended to provide them with information gained by the experiences of others. The information here contained may be useful in helping them get started or in keeping going. Book The Natural History of the Farm

Download or read book The Natural History of the Farm written by James George Needham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of the Farm: A Guide to the Practical Study of the Sources of Our Living in Wild Nature A little earlier there lived in your locality a race of red men whose cruder tools and weapons were made of int, of bone and of copper; who planted native seeds (among them the maize, the squash, and the potato) and whose traditions were mainly of war and of the chase. These were indeed children of nature, dependent upon their own hands for obtaining from mother earth all their sustenance. There was little division of labor among them. Each must know (at least, each family must know) how to gather and how to prepare as well as how to use. Today you live largely on the products of the labors of others. You get your food, not with sickle and ail and Spear, but with a can-opener, and you eat it without even an inkling of where it grew. So many hands have intervened between the getting and the using of all things needful, that some factory is thought of as the source of them instead of mother earth. Suppose that in order to realize how you have lost connection, you step out into the wildwood empty handed, and look about you. Choose and say what you will have of all you see before you for your next meal? Where will you find your next suit of clothes and what will it be like? Ah, could you even improvise a wrapping, and a string with which to tie it, from what wild nature o ers you? Book Complete Farmer s Guide

Download or read book Complete Farmer s Guide written by Edwin Jackson Kyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Farmer's Guide: Fundamentals of Farming and Farm Life It was also the purpose of the authors to provide a book that did not stop with giving mere advice about farm prae tices to be memorized by the pupils, but taught first of all the fundamental principles of plant and animal growth and reproduction and of soil management. In this way the pupils are made able to understand the reasons for farm practices and to criticise any old or new practice independently. By emphasizing these far-reaching principles first, the thousand and one details of practice in the study of farm crops and animal husbandry which are later given become a matter for simple reasoning instead of a mere dead weight to be carried in memory. In order still further to develop the powers of observation, exercise the reason, and connect the lessons with the daily life and home needs of the pupils, lists of suggestive questions, exercises, and problems are provided for each subject. It is an astonishing fact that no text-book has given to the work of the farmer girls and farmers' wives more than a pass ing mention. Undoubtedly, the conditions in the country schools make this problem difficult, but it is believed that, with the aid of the experts in domestic economy and rural teaching who generously co - operated, a very valuable be ginning has been made in this text in enabling the school to give somewhat the same preparation for her life work on the farm to the farmer girl that is now given to the farmer boy. We have in general tried to broaden the conception of the course in elementary agriculture from that of a mere treatise on raising plants and animals for sale to that of a means of preparation for living intelligently and happily, as well as profitably, on the farm. It is a great pleasure to express here our appreciation of the assistance generously given by our colleagues in prepar ing this book. Download or read book Sky Copyright Classic Reprint written by W. J. Geib and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sky Copyright During the past two decades there has been a more rapid movement from the older established communities into the newly developing sections of the United States and Canada than during any previous period of equal length. For various reasons many farmers have left their old home surroundings and have established new homes in sections where land values are lower, but where opportunities for higher development are promising. Thousands of people in the cities and towns have become land hungry and the back to the land movement has assumed considerable proportions. People in the various pro fessions and in practically all walks of life are today giving more thought and consideration to the question of securing their living, in part at least, directly from the soil, than ever before in the history of our country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The County Agent Story: The Impact of Extension Work on Farming and Country Life, Minnesota This is a story of progress and people of a new kind a teacher and a new kind of school where the teacher, using new methods, reaches farm people who at first were not receptive, but later went all the way while they at the same time taught the teacher. We make no pretense of the scholarly approach. This is rather a simple narrative by one who, as a member of the extension service, lived and worked with farm people. I have drawn heavily on early reports and records and other source material and, perhaps too liberally on memory and experience. More has been left out than has been included. In writing I have made an effort to give due credit and recognition to extension workers for what they have accomplished. I have also tried to write of the great achieve ments of the rural leaders who have worked so unselfishly and untiringly to achieve the better living for farm people. It has been the policy, and rightly so, for county agents to stay in the background and to freely give credit to country people for their accomplishments. It took team work by the extension staff, the farm leaders and the many others who have assisted along the way to get the work done.
