  • Author : Michael James
  • Publisher : Morgan James Publishing
  • Release : 2018-04-17
  • ISBN : 168350772X
  • Pages : 269 pages

Download or read book Life to the Years written by Michael James and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cardiologist and his patient tell a true story of surviving and thriving, in a book both informational and inspirational. After Michael Ranville’s emergency treatment, his cardiologist told him: Given the nature and severity of your heart attack, you should no longer be with us. Statistically, you are dead. Now, the doctor and patient unite to present a unique story for the benefit of heart patients—or anyone who has a heart. A generation ago, heart patients rarely defied the statistical category that dictated a sedentary existence and an abbreviated life. But this is the tale of one patient who didn’t die. He continued to live, refused to take up membership in that statistical category. Under the thirty-year care of Dr. Michael James and a forward-leaning cardiac community, Michael Ranville and a host of other determined heart patients created a new statistical category. Life to the Years is also the lively, anecdote-laden story of a tenacious and resourceful cardiologist who helped Ranville seize control of life after heart disease. The authors illustrate the development of life-saving technology with fascinating stories that underscore the human element that still drives medicine. Life to the Years does not shy from the controversial, from the uncomfortable. A confrontation with mortality is the inevitable companion of heart disease. For the authors, the significance of dignity when faced with death—for both family and patient—is far from a theoretical discussion. This is a memoir that will both enlighten and encourage, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at a successful doctor-patient relationship.

Book Pulse of My Heart

Download or read book Pulse of My Heart written by Brian O'Mara-Croft and published by Behler Publications. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patty O'Mara-Croft's "widowmaker" heart attack was a cruel assault on her body, threatening the happiest years of her life. Originally misdiagnosed as a panic attack, common among women who suffer heart attacks, Patty's heart suffers permanent damage, and her precarious condition threatens to raze all joy and hope between Patty and her husband, Brian. In a recounting both informative and inspirational, heartbreaking and funny, Patty and Brian share their stories from their own unique perspectives—the first-person account of painful revelations and medical struggles and a loved one's experience of despair, hope, and renewal. Families in medical crisis are getting sucker-punched every day and need help from those who overcame it and emerge stronger than before. The dual voice of both authors represents a love that flourishes, even as Patty's health weakens and is no longer a viable candidate for a heart transplant. Pulse of My Heart is part medical mystery, part comedy of errors, part family drama, and an enduring love story. The field notes at the back of the book focus on: The sometimes-strained relationship between doctors and patient Preparing for anticipatory grief The potential for addiction when narcotics are part of the drug protocol Dealing with familial strife during a time of need Struggling with others' prayers when one's own faith is strained Trying to maintain some level of dignity in an utterly undignified environment Finding ways to be an effective parent in a blended family when illness demands so much attention

Book excerpt: I'm not a medical physician nor do I have any extensive education on heart disease or congestive heart failure. I'm simply your everyday guy who found himself with a critical medical condition that if not treated correctly, could easily cost me my life. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a very serious condition that shouldn't be ignored. Honestly, I can say when I was first informed of my condition; I wasn't' concerned about who else was suffering from this condition or other people's opinions. What was fresh in my mind was that my father died three months after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I know firsthand what a person experience when they are diagnosed and living with CHF. My objective with this book is not to only encourage you, but also share with you steps I took to improve my condition. Six months after being diagnosed with an ejection fraction of 30%, I received a surprising phone call from the RN who was responsible for monitoring my progress. She called me after my second echo Heart Scan test results and stated, "Mr. Westbrooks, I'm not sure what took place, but I'm happy to inform you that the Echocardiogram test results show that your heart's ejection fraction improved tremendously and you're no longer on our CHF monitoring program. My heart's ejection fraction improved from 30% to 50%. No one was able to convince me that I would be able to do this.
