I've lived in my adopted home for a decade and during that time, I've met an astounding number of foreigners who were thriving here while I've also met plenty of them who clearly were only surviving, and just barely in some cases. Some people who've been here a long time still in survival mode, living in tiny apartments, bouncing around from sub-par job to sub-par job and doing nothing to plan for their futures. • ISBN : 1931930430
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Learning to Think Korean written by L. Robert Kohls and published by Nicholas Brealey. This book was released on 2001-08-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to understanding Korea - from home to work and those cultural destinations in between. Kohls shares a feast of Korean culture: a ricebowl of history and tradition complemented by an array of spicy tidbits that capture the reader's attention like a mouthful of kimchi. Based on personal experience, he provides critical incidents that explore the more puzzling aspects of Korean culture. Kohls explores Korean values - traditional values, value changes over the past forty years and projected values for the early decades of the twenty-first century. He is equally insightful when it comes to discussing the cultural patterns and practices of the workplace. He takes on management style, personal issues, networking and "pull" negotiating style, persistence, key Korean business relations and more. To a greater extent than most other Asian countries, Korea adheres to the traditional collectivist and Confucian traits of harmony, hierarchy, ingroups/outgroups, status, and proper behavior. According to Kohls, these traits plus the more Westernized values of the younger generations and the veneer of modern urban savvy surface in surprising combinations in personal and workplace relationships - often where they are least expected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In search of national unity and state control in the decade following the Korean War, North Korea turned to labor. Mandating rapid industrial growth, the government stressed order and consistency in everyday life at both work and home. In Heroes and Toilers, Cheehyung Harrison Kim offers an unprecedented account of life and labor in postwar North Korea that brings together the roles of governance and resistance. Kim traces the state’s pursuit of progress through industrialism and examines how ordinary people challenged it every step of the way. Even more than coercion or violence, he argues, work was crucial to state control. Industrial labor was both mode of production and mode of governance, characterized by repetitive work, mass mobilization, labor heroes, and the insistence on convergence between living and working. At the same time, workers challenged and reconfigured state power to accommodate their circumstances—coming late to work, switching jobs, fighting with bosses, and profiting from the black market, as well as following approved paths to secure their livelihood, resolve conflict, and find happiness. Heroes and Toilers is a groundbreaking analysis of postwar North Korea that avoids the pitfalls of exoticism and exceptionalism to offer a new answer to the fundamental question of North Korea’s historical development.

Book Cultural Dimensions of Expatriate Life in South Korea

Download or read book Cultural Dimensions of Expatriate Life in South Korea written by Bill Drake and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-10-02 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cultural Dimensions - Korea" was written for the dedicated traveler, professional or business person, and serious expatriate who wants to hit the ground running in this complex cultural environment. This is not a book about manners and etiquette - rather, it focuses on what any foreigner needs to know about how their own cultural values and perspectives are likely to interact with the values and perspectives of their Korean counterparts, co-workers, and friends. Mastering the contents of this book will propel you a long way toward the goal of being able to integrate yourself as seamlessly as possible into the social and business life of South Korea. Tim Leffel, a well-known travel writer has this to say about 'Cultural Dimensions - Korea" "I checked this one out first because I spent 14 months there as an English teacher in the late 1990s. To say it was a struggle sometimes from a cultural standpoint is putting it mildly. Some expats couldn't deal at all and they bailed out. Others coped by doing nothing but working and hanging out in expat bars, avoiding contact with most locals. Others just got bitter and were a royal pain to be around. The easiest course is to go with the flow, and this guide has plenty of advice on how to do that. I found the information throughout to be spot-on and consistent with my experiences there. I wish I'd had this in hand before I moved there and started working." http: //travel.booklocker.com/tag/expatriate-guides/

Book Living on Your Own

  • Release : 2014-03-11
  • ISBN : 1438450141
  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Living on Your Own written by Jesook Song and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living on Your Own is an ethnography of young, single women in South Korea who seek to live independently. Using extensive interviews, along with media analysis and archival research, Jesook Song traces the women's difficulties in achieving residential autonomy. Song exposes the clash between the women's burgeoning desire for independent lives and the ongoing incursion of traditional, conservative family ideology and marriage pressure into housing practices and financial institutions. She pays particular attention to the Korean rent system and the reliance on lump-sum cash even for basic subsistence, which promotes tight control of young adults' lives by family and kinship networks. The young women whose voices feature prominently in this book are a prototype of global youth in crisis: caught between aspirations for the self-development and flexible lifestyle championed by globalizing media and communication technology and the reality of their position as flexible labor in a neoliberal economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, Japan has the highest old-age dependency ratio of all OECD countries, with a ratio in 2017 of over 50 persons aged 65 and above for every 100 persons aged 20 to 64. This ratio is projected to rise to 79 per hundred in 2050. The rapid population ageing in Japan is a major challenge for achieving further increases in living standards and ensuring the financial sustainability of public social expenditure. However, with the right policies in place, there is an opportunity to cope with this challenge by extending working lives and making better use of older workers' knowledge and skills. This report investigates policy issues and discusses actions to retain and incentivise the elderly to work more by further reforming retirement policies and seniority-wages, investing in skills to improve productivity and keeping up with labour market changes through training policy, and ensuring good working conditions for better health with tackling long-hours working culture.
