Download or read book Lives That Resist Telling written by Eithne Luibhéid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lives That Resist Telling challenges the resounding scholarly silence about the lives of migrant women who identify as lesbian, queer, or nonheteronormative. Reworking social science methodologies and theories, the essays explore the experiences of migrant Latina lesbians in Los Angeles; Latina lesbians whose transnational lives span the borders between the United States and Mexico; non-heteronormative migrant Muslim women in Norway and Denmark; economically privileged Chinese lesbian or lala women in Australia; and Iranian lesbian asylum-seekers in Turkey. The authors show how state migration controls and multiple institutions of power try to subjectify and govern migrant lesbians in often contradictory ways, and how migrant lesbians cope, strategize, and respond. The essays complicate and rework binaries of visibility/invisibility, in/out, victim/agent, home/homeless, and belonging/unbelonging. Tellability emerges as a technology of power and violence, and conversely, as a mode of healing, (re)building a sense of self and connection to others, and creating conditions for livability and queer world-making. This book was first published as a special issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies.

Download or read book Truth Telling and Other Ecclesial Practices of Resistance written by Christine Helmer and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, leading American Lutheran theologians, inspired by the Scandinavian emphasis on theology as embodied practice, ask how Christian communities might be mobilized for resistance against systemic injustices. They argue that the challenges we confront today as citizens of the United States, as a species in relation to all the other species on the planet, and as members of the body of Christ require an imaginative reconceptualization of the inherited tradition. The driving force of each chapter is the commitment to truth-telling in naming the church’s complicity with social and political evils, and to reorienting the church to the truth of grace that Christianity was created to communicate. Contributors ask how ecclesial resources may be generatively repurposed for the church in the world today, for church-building grounded in Christ and for empowering the church’s witness for justice. The authors take up the theme of resistance in both theoretical and pragmatic terms, on the one hand, rethinking doctrine, on the other, reconceiving lived religion and pastoral care, in light of the necessary urgencies of the time, and bearing witness to the God whose truth includes both justice and hope.
Download or read book Borders of Belonging written by Heide Castañeda and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borders of Belonging investigates a pressing but previously unexplored aspect of immigration in America—the impact of immigration policies and practices not only on undocumented migrants, but also on their family members, some of whom possess a form of legal status. Heide Castañeda reveals the trauma, distress, and inequalities that occur daily, alongside the stratification of particular family members' access to resources like education, employment, and health care. She also paints a vivid picture of the resilience, resistance, creative responses, and solidarity between parents and children, siblings, and other kin. Castañeda's innovative ethnography combines fieldwork with individuals and family groups to paint a full picture of the experiences of mixed-status families as they navigate the emotional, social, political, and medical difficulties that inevitably arise when at least one family member lacks legal status. Exposing the extreme conditions in the heavily-regulated U.S./Mexico borderlands, this book presents a portentous vision of how the further encroachment of immigration enforcement would affect millions of mixed-status families throughout the country.

Download or read book Daily Life of Women in Medieval Europe written by Belle S. Tuten and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the everyday lives of medieval European women: how they ate and slept, what their work was like, and the many factors that shaped their experiences. Ordinary people are often hard to see in the historical record. This resource for students reveals the everyday world of the Middle Ages for women: sex, marriage, work, and power. Using up-to-date scholarship from both archeology and history, this book covers major daily concerns for medieval people, their understanding of the world, their relationships with others, and their place in society. It attempts to clarify what we know and what we do not know about women's daily lives in the Western European Middle Ages, between approximately 500 and 1500 CE. The book's focus is everyday life, so the topics are organized around women's chores, expectations, and difficulties, especially with regard to sexuality and childbirth. In addition to broad survey information about the Middle Ages, the book also introduces major women writers and thinkers and provides some examples of their work, giving the reader an opportunity to engage with the women themselves.

Book excerpt: Love, Resistance, Betrayal is a mixture of fact and fiction, based on the true story of Gavino Luna (stage name Gavino De Lunas), a famous Sardinian poet and singer who became a war hero, fought against the regime that ruined his country and was ultimately betrayed. His heart broken, Gavino decides to enlist in the Italian army, persuading his two friends, Nigola and Martine to do the same. Although it’s 1914, and a violent war rages across Europe, Italy has chosen not to become involved. But Benito Mussolini has other ideas, plans that will change Italy forever and draw her into not one, but two World Wars. A patriotic Sardinian, Gavino decides the only way to save his country is to fight against those responsible for dragging them all into hell. As a Slovenian citizen under Austro-Hungarian control Anej has no choice but to defend the Empire from the Italians, but his fight is only just beginning. Determined his own children will grow up free and never be used in other people’s wars Anej joins the struggle for an independent country, a decision that leads to love and heartbreak. Delighted to renew his friendship with ex-lover Margherita Sarfatti, Jewish businessman Moise Pace is happy to provide financial support to her latest prodigy, Benito Mussolini, until he begins to have doubts about the direction the country is heading. As the danger from their German ally increases Moise wishes he’d made different choices. Father Ben Lawrence has no idea why God has chosen him to serve on the Western Front, but he is determined to go wherever he is needed. His faith leads him to the Vatican where he realises his purpose is to save as many people as possible from the scourge of fascism, beginning with Slovenia. Through the Great War, the turbulent decades of the 1920s and 1930s, the occupation of Slovenia and the massacre in the Ardeatine Caves on 24 March 1944, Love, Resistance, Betrayal follows the lives of several people in Sardinia, Italy, Slovenia and the Vatican. ***Contains adult content***
