Alexander, curious, restless and eccentric, spent five years exploring the New World. He used his expertise in disciplines as diverse as botany, chemistry, geology, magnetism, mapping, linguistics and history to become the first ecologist of the non-maritime New World. We owe to Alexander the isotherms that we see in our weather maps, the establishment of international collaborating weather stations and popular writings where he shows 'the connection of things'.
