Download or read book Lives of Indian Officers Vol 3 written by John William Kaye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Indian Officers, Vol. 3: Illustrative of the History of the Civil and Military Service of India; Major D'arcy Todd, Sir Henry Lawrence, General Neill, General John Nickolson Almost from his cradle, d'arcy had evinced, in his childish actions, the kindling of that martial enthusiasm which after wards so unmistakably developed itself. It is remembered that, when only two or three years old, he would march about the house drumming, and would convert all the chairs in the nursery into soldiers, or cannon, or other ih signia of war. In due time, however, he was sent by his uncle to school - first, to a preparatory seminary, kept by Miss Dawes, at Turnham Green, and afterwards to an academy at Ware, in Hertfordshire, where, although he developed no great amount of precocious genius, he made good progress, and took a respectable place in the school. He was always, indeed, fond of reading, and the books in which he most delighted were books of adventure, illus trative of self-help and self-reliance, or those which were largely tinged with the glowing imagery of the East. 'i have been reading Robinson Crusoe and the Tales of the Gem'i, ' he wrote to his brother Frederick, when he was ten years old. They have amused me very much. I hope that you love reading as I do, and also that you remember what you read.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... of Henry Lawrence was all on the outer side; he was personally one of the most gentle, loving, and compassionate of men; and, in his relations with the great world around him, he was essentially charitable and forbearing. There was no iconoclasm in his nature. He grieved over the errors which were ever patent before him; but he had a great pity for those who professed them, and it was his desire rather to persuade than to break. I might add to these feeble words many tributes of others, but they press upon me in such numbers that I know not how to select. I cannot forget, however, that when a great meeting was held in London to do honour to the memory of Sir Henry Lawrence, Lord Stanley, who had visited him in India, threw a wreath upon his bier bright with the flowers of unquestionable truth. 'Sir Henry Lawrence, ' he said, 'rose to eminence step by step, not by favour of any man, certainly not by subserviency either to ruling authorities or to popular ideas, but simply by the operation of that natural law which in troubled times brings the strongest mind, be it where it may, to the post of highest command. I knew Sir Henry Lawrence six years ago. Travelling in the Punjab, I passed a month in his camp, and it then seemed to me, as it does now, that his personal character was far above his career, eminent as that career has been. If he had died a private and undistinguished person, the impress of his mind would still have been left on all those who came personally into contact with him. I thought him, as far as I could judge, sagacious and far-seeing in matters of policy; and I had daily opportunity of witnessing, even under all the disadvantages of a long and rapid journey, his constant assiduity in the despatch of business. But it was..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Indian Officers, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrative of the History of the Civil and Military Service of India I think that something should be said regarding the circumstances, which have resulted in the publication of this book. Two or three years ago, I was invited by the editor and by the proprietor of Good Words to write a series of biographical papers illustrative of the careers of some of our most distinguished "Indian Heroes." As the materials, in most instances, were not to be obtained from printed books or papers, to perform this task in a satisfactory manner - that is, to write month after month, throughout the year, a memoir of some soldier or statesman distinguished in Indian history - would have been impossible to one, the greater part of whoso time was devoted to other duties, if it had not chanced that for many years I had been gathering, from different original sources, information relating both to the public sendees and the private lives of many of those whose careers it was desired that I should illustrate. I had many large manuscript volumes, the growth of past years of historical research, full of personal correspondence and biographical notes, and I had extensive collections of original papers, equally serviceable, which had not been transcribed. Excerpt: ... recommended was not more politic, it was at all events more generous, and indeed more just, than the opposite course. But the Governor-General was not a man to brook opposition of any kind, and for a while he withdrew his smiles from his favourite lieutenant. But all this soon passed away. Lord Wellesley wrote him a long and very friendly letter, assuring him of his unbroken confidence--telling him that he was at full liberty to return to Mysore, to join the Government party in the Upper Provinces, to prepare for another mission to Persia, or to go home to recruit his health, as he might think best. 'You may be assured, ' wrote Lord Wellesley, ' that, although these discussions have given me great pain, they have not in any degree impaired my friendship and regard for you/or my general confidence and esteem. You cannot suppose that such transactions did not irritate me considerably at the unseasonable moment of their pressure. But you have already received from me suggestions of the same nature with those expressed in this letter, and you are aware of my aversion to every description of attack upon my judgment, excepting fair, distinct, direct argument. Reflecting on these observations, I entertain a confident expectation that you will always pursue that course of proceeding, in the discharge of the. duties of friendship towards me, which you now know to be most congenial to my character and temper; and I am satisfied that you will continue to possess the high place in my esteem and attachment to which you are so justly entitled by every consideration of gratitude and respect. I am extremely grieved to learn that your health has been so deeply affected. I trust, however, that the sea air and repose will entirely restore you. I leave you..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Indian Officers, Vol. 2 of 2: Illustrative of the History of the Civil and Military Service of India House at Montrose, illuminated with lamps from top to bottom. There must have been something in all this greatly to inspire and encourage the young Scotch subaltern, for Malcolm him self had risen from the same small beginning, and now his 3 name was in every man's'mouth, and all were delighting to do him honour. What might not any young scot, with the right stuff in him, do in India? In all directions there was encouragement and assurances not likely to be thrown away upon a youth of young Burnes' s lively imagination. A M011 trose man had sent him out to India; an Eadinburgh man was now at the head of the Government of Bombay; a Glasgow man was Governor of the Madras Presidency, and now the son of an Eskdale farmer was receiving the plaudits of all classes of his countrymen, and returning for a while to his native land, a successful soldier and a successful statesman, amidst a whirl of popularity that might have fully Satisfied the desires of the most ambitious hero 111 the world. But to young Alexander Burnes the encouragements 'of the future were not greater, than the consolations of the present. I like the country amazingly, he ete to Montrose, and as yet am not at all desirous of a return to my own land. Here I have everything to be wished for - plenty of time to myself, a gentlemanly commanding officer, and several very pleasant brother-officers. But he added, for thoughts of home were still pulling at his heart, how dearly should I like to see little Charley or Cecilia trudging into my canvas abode - but, ah! That is far beyond probability. However, I may yet see Charley'in India, for he seems a boy made for it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.
