Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Greek Statesmen: Second Series The lives given in the first volume of this series were pre sented to the reader as a picture of the Greek world down to the close of the struggle with Persia. I undertook in the present volume to deal with the statesmen whose lives be long, for the most part, to the period of the fatal struggle between Athens and Sparta. I have, however, been oh liged to confine myself to the lives of those statesmen whose political activity belongs almost wholly to the time preceding the catastrophe of the Athenian armament at Syracuse. The third volume will cover a larger period. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... aggression; for only by a direct and unsparing attack could they hope to arrest the progress of principles which, if not summarily checked, must in the end subvert the foundations of Spartan and Dorian polity. But although they were eager to strike the blow, they were not yet prepared to do so; and as, beyond all doubt, the Efforts to master-spirit in the camp of the enemy was Peribring "ooTM DEGREES kles, every effort must, in the mean season, be made of Perikies, to neutralise his influence and even to bring about B.c. 431 j DEGREESs rum an(j banishment. With the expulsion or the silencing of the great leader of the demos the old patrician party might regain its old ascendency, and the struggle with Sparta might be avoided by surrendering everything in the constitution of Athens to which Eupatrid feeling and fancy might take objection. The oligarchs of Athens and the peers of Sparta were, indeed, in hearty agreement. Perikles must be put down at all risks and all costs; and perhaps the easiest way of putting him down might be found in an appeal to the religious fears and superstitions of all ranks and classes in the state. For all practical purposes the Athenians were aware of the course which things were taking at Sparta. Their own Assembly of envoys, who happened to be present on other allies and business, were able to tell them of what had passed gnu at in the meeting of the Peloponnesian allies, in Sparta which they themselves took part. The formal congress which followed this debate sat with closed doors; but the tenor of the speeches made at the first assembly left little doubt of the issue of the second. This second council resolved on war, but no formal declaration had been sent to Athens when the first effort was made to get

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Greek Statesmen: Solon-Chemistokles The history of a people is often best studied in the lives of individual citizens; and this is perhaps to a larger extent the case in the ancient Greek world than elsewhere. A Greek nation, in one sense of the word, there never was; but some individual Greek citizens proposed to themselves and acted on a policy which, if consistently carried out, might have had for its results the growth of a vigorous national life. Apart from this there is the personal interest which gathers round the career of great men, and which should lead us to examine most carefully the grounds of the judgements passed upon them. These reasons have led me to hope that the cause of historical truth may be promoted by a series of lives of Greek statesmen from the dawn of contemporary history to the last days of the Achaian League. In a certain sense, it is true, all free citizens in such a city as Athens were statesmen; hut even at Athens there were always some who rose to preeminence among their fellows, and the influence exercised by Perikles has been described by Thucydides as virtually the rule or sway of one single man. It is also true that the distinction now commonly drawn between military and civil life, between the statesmanship of legislative assemblies and the tactics of commanders in war, had no existence for the countrymen of Themistokles or Timoleon. The man who had most influence in debate might be also the most successful leader in the battle-field, or, as in the case of Kleon, he might not; but there was nothing to prevent him from appearing in the character of an orator or in that of a general, and he might be called upon at any time to lay aside the former for the latter. This book was released on 2003 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Greece, Themistocles was universally acknowledged as the architect of the Greek victory in the great Persian invasion. Afterwards, however, political opinion turned against him in his native Athens. He fled into exile and eventually wound up in the court of the king of Persia. Dr. Keaveney's book examines the considerable body of evidence which survives about Themistocles' journey and his life as a refugee in Persia, endeavoring to separate fact from the abundant fiction to be found there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Outstanding individuals have the whole world as their memorial."--PericlesThe influence of ancient Greek civilization has been felt throughout modern Western history. Greek ideas can be found in the laws that govern our lives, the buildings in which we live, the books we read, and the vocabulary we use every day. Because these ideas have become so much a part of our daily life, we tend to forget that they originated more than 2,500 years ago.Ancient Greeks chronicles the lives and accomplishments of Greek figures whose influence continues to be felt today. We read about Greeks from all walks of life, including one of the greatest physicians who ever lived, the father of logic, and a brilliant mathematician who once said, "Give me a lever long enough, and a fulcrum strong enough, and I will single-handedly move the world." And move the world he did, but with his ideas, not a mighty fulcrum. In 42 essays, authors Rosalie and Charles Baker explore the lives of many personalities, from the most famous Greeks to people who are usually overlooked, including:Aesop, author of timeless fables that continue to provide lessons todayLycurgus, the legendary ruler of SpartaPlato, the great philosopher who established the Academy in AthensPhidippides, a courier and long-distance runner whose run from Marathon to Athens became the basis of the modern marathonSappho, one of the best female poets of classical antiquityHippocrates, one of the greatest physicians who ever livedAlcibiades, a patriot-turned-traitor who was exiled from GreeceIctinus, the architect responsible for the design of the ParthenonAristotle, the father of logic who tutored the teenage Alexander the GreatAlexander the Great, who ruled Greece, defeated the great Persian empire, conquered lands bordering the eastern Mediterranean Sea, including Egypt, and won control of lands stretching into India (and all that before his 33rd birthday)Zeno, founder of the philosophy known as StoicismThe biographies span the years 700 B.C. to 200 B.C., from Homer, the master of epic poetry and the author of the Iliad, to Eratosthenes, a brilliant mathematician who was the first to calculate the earth's circumference. A handy fact box that lists birth and death dates and the major accomplishments of each person profiled, abundant photographs and specially commissioned maps, a timeline, a glossary of Greek terms, an index of Greeks by profession, a pronunciation guide, and suggestions for further reading all add to the usefulness of this exceptional reference. With figures from fields as diverse as literature, mathematics, politics, the military, philosophy, and science, Ancient Greeks provides a comprehensive examination of the origins of modern civilization.
