THIS immortal, divine, and inspired poet, the pride of England, and the glory of the English language, was horn April 23, 1564, at Stratford-on-Avon, in Warwickshire, a small town ahout 90 miles distant from London. His father Johu Shakspeare was a considerahle dealer in wool, and was at one time possessed of a small patrimonial estate; hat, from losses in trade, or from other misfortunes, his circumstances hecame much reduced. His mother was the daughter and heiress of Rohert Ardeu of Wellingcote. Shakspeare was the eldest of ten children, and received the 6rst rudiments of his education at the free school of Stratford. His stay there, however, was short j for, after applying some time to the study of the Latin language, he was removed, prohahly on account of the misfortunes of his father, to assist him in his husiness. Before he was nineteen years of age, he married Anne Hathawaye, the daughter of a respectahle yeoman in the neighhourhood. This lady was eight years older than her hushand.
