Book Livelihood and Urban Poverty Reduction in Ethiopia

Download or read book Livelihood and Urban Poverty Reduction in Ethiopia written by Tegegne Gebre-Egziabher and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international development policy agenda is currently dominated by the theme of poverty reduction. The theme has been vigorously pursued by multilateral donors, such as The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank, and others. Their assistance has also been tuned to pro-poor policy frameworks. Poverty, however, is understood mainly to be a rural phenomenon. This is based on the fact that rural poverty is widespread and pervasive and affects a large segment of the population since the majority of people in less developed countries reside in rural areas. There is, however, an increasing trend of urban growth and with it urban poverty all over the world. In Ethiopia urban poverty, in comparison to rural poverty and national level poverty, has increased over time. This has necessitated urban poverty reduction as an important area of intervention in urban development and planning. The objective of this study is to understand the livelihood situations of the poor in big and small towns, and identify the gaps and linkages between the livelihood requirements of the poor and policies at municipal level. The study was conducted in nine cities and towns of the country, including the capital city.

Book Issues in Urban Poverty

Download or read book Issues in Urban Poverty written by Daniel Kassahun and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The urban sector in Ethiopia has largely been neglected by researchers and policy analysts, and ignored in debates on poverty. This has resulted in a 'rural bias', which is reflected in development policies and public debate in the country. If one of the goals of development is to reverse the dominance of the rural economy, and to place the urban environment on the centre stage, it is important to shift the balance of the research agenda from the rural to the urban. The papers in this volume were first presented at the Third International Conference on the Ethiopian Economy convened by the Ethiopian Economic Association in 2005.

Book Structural change and poverty reduction in Ethiopia Economy wide analysis of the evolving role of agriculture

Download or read book Structural change and poverty reduction in Ethiopia Economy wide analysis of the evolving role of agriculture written by Dorosh, Paul and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores these issues for Ethiopia utilizing an economy-wide computable general equilibrium (CGE) model based on a detailed social accounting matrix (SAM). We present the results of four alternative investment scenarios -- faster investment in i) cities; ii) crop agriculture; iii) the rural non-farm sector and agro-industry; and iv) livestock. The simulations suggest that investments in cities generate faster economic growth and structural transformation. However, given the large share of the population with incomes linked to agriculture and the rural economy, investments in the rural economy are likely to continue to be more pro-poor than urban public investments through the mid-2020s. After the mid-2020s, investments in cities become more pro-poor. In short, though rapid economic growth and structural transformation have diminished the relative importance of the agricultural sector in Ethiopia’s economy, continued public investments in agriculture and the broader agri-food system remain crucial for equity and poverty alleviation in Ethiopia, as well as for reducing food import dependency.

Book Poverty Food Insecurity and Livelihood Strategies in Rural Ethiopia

Download or read book Poverty Food Insecurity and Livelihood Strategies in Rural Ethiopia written by Shumete Gizaw Woldeamanuel and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and food insecurity are overwhelming problems of rural Ethiopia. This book argues for approaching poverty and food insecurity as the two sides of the same coin in the areas where the two ideas cannot be separated. The book begins with an exposition of the concepts of poverty and food insecurity and shows that being rural means being at risk of limited livelihood opportunities. This piece of work is an exploratory one and preferred to triangulate quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. It argues that applying sustainable livelihood framework combines rural livelihood strategies to promote rural development through growth in agriculture and rural off-farm activities with non-rural strategies that provide people with diversified livelihood sources. It goes on to argue that that there are both natural and human factors that intensified the existing poverty and food insecurity in the area. Evidence is presented to substantiate this argument. The book concludes by discussing the implications of applying holistic approach to poverty reduction and food security; and also the danger of overlooking indigenous knowledge of the local people.

Implementation of the GTP requires mobilization of financial and human resources, especially for infrastructure development.

Book Poverty Household Livelihood and Interaction with Local Institutions

Download or read book Poverty Household Livelihood and Interaction with Local Institutions written by Fredu Nega Tegebu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty reduction has been at the forefront of the literature on development. However, analysis of poverty in the developing world has been limited to static analysis using cross sectional data. Dynamic analysis of poverty requires panel data and the lack of it has been the limiting factor in developing countries until recently. Over the last decade, a growing amount of panel data sets for developing countries has enabled researchers to start addressing the movements in poverty and the factors explaining these movements. Using a panel data of three years, this volume addresses two broader issues of poverty. The first is related to understanding the level of poverty and the correlates thereof. It starts with issues related to measurement and analysis of poverty, and goes on to analyze the dynamics of poverty. It also addresses the impact of two safety net programs, the Food for Work (FFW) and the Food Security Package (FSP) programs, upon transient and chronic poverty. The second issue is on rural assets. It focused on livestock and social capital to analyze the importance of assets to household welfare.

Download or read book Ethiopia written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopia in the decade up to 2005 has been characterized by robust growth rates of the urban economy, where a still limited share of the population lives. The urban economy has been estimated to contribute at least half of gross domestic product (GDP) (53 percent in 2002/03) and to explain a significant part of its growth. Only an estimated 12.6 percent of the poor live in urban areas and the overwhelming concentration of poverty in rural areas seem unlikely to be reversed in the medium term. Sustained growth, to be shared among a relatively small part of the population, could have been expected to reduce poverty significantly in urban areas, but this has not been the case. While poverty incidence remains lower in urban than in rural areas, rural areas have made significant progress and the rural-urban gap in poverty incidence is decreasing.

Book The Bang for the Birr

Download or read book The Bang for the Birr written by Tewodaj Mogues and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2008 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, Ethiopia's government has tried to foster economic growth through agricultural development. Given the public expenditures required to achieve this goal and the limited resources available, policymakers need information on how to most effectively allocate those resources. This report provides that information by examining the relative impact that different types of spending have on rural household welfare. The results are surprising: while agricultural productivity plays a critical role in rural welfare, public spending on agriculture does not have as important an effect on productivity as would be expected. The authors find that expenditure in roads is far more effective in improving rural welfare, although its impact can vary across different regions. Public spending on education has more moderate returns than investments in road infrastructure, but these returns are still larger than those from agricultural spending, as well as being more spread out across regions than those from road infrastructure. Through such findings, the report provides policymakers, analysts, and others in the development arena with a guide to shaping future policies and a basis for additional research.

Download or read book Marginality written by Joachim von Braun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new approach on understanding causes of extreme poverty and promising actions to address it. Its focus is on marginality being a root cause of poverty and deprivation. “Marginality” is the position of people on the edge, preventing their access to resources, freedom of choices, and the development of capabilities. The book is research based with original empirical analyses at local, national, and local scales; book contributors are leaders in their fields and have backgrounds in different disciplines. An important message of the book is that economic and ecological approaches and institutional innovations need to be integrated to overcome marginality. The book will be a valuable source for development scholars and students, actors that design public policies, and for social innovators in the private sector and non-governmental organizations.
