Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary culture, accountability is usually understood in terms of holding people who have done something wrong accountable for their actions. As such, it is virtually synonymous with punishing someone. Living Accountably argues that accountability should also be understood as a significant, forward-looking virtue, an excellence possessed by those who willingly embrace being accountable to those who have proper standing, when that standing is exercised appropriately. Those who have this virtue are people who strive to live accountably. The book gives a fine-grained description of the virtue and how it is exercised, including an account of the motivational profile of the one who has the virtue. It examines the relation of accountability to other virtues, such as honesty and humility, as well as opposing vices, such as self-deception, arrogance, and servility. Though the virtue of accountability is compatible with individual autonomy, recognizing the importance of the virtue does justice to the social character of human persons. C. Stephen Evans also explores the history of this virtue in other cultures and historical eras, providing evidence that the virtue is widely recognized, even if it is somewhat eclipsed in modern western societies. Accountability is also a virtue that connects ethical life with religious life for many people, since it is common for people to have a sense that they are accountable in a global way for how they live their lives. Living Accountably explores the question as to whether global accountability can be understood in a purely secular way, as accountability to other humans, or whether it must be understood as accountability to God, or some other transcendent reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viktor Frankl, an Auschwitz survivor, once said that to be human is to suffer. Suffering is an unavoidable part of life, but how do we engage our suffering in a culture that teaches us to avoid suffering at all costs? Through the telling of two stories, the horrific death of his parents and the exiled Judeans of the sixth century BCE, Chris Williams offers a way of engaging suffering that questions the dominant voices of popular culture. Perhaps hope is not found in avoiding suffering at all costs, but by inviting others into our darkest moments.

Our emotions and attitudes can be altered in just seconds. We are all susceptible to the many life experiences that enter our day. We are affected, consciously or subconsciously. Every moment of time is part of our life. All that we call good or bad can be used by God to teach us and to know him more. God wastes nothing.

Book excerpt: This revised, fully updated second edition covers the analysis, design, and construction of reinforced concrete structures from a real-world perspective. It examines different reinforced concrete elements such as slabs, beams, columns, foundations, basement and retaining walls and pre-stressed concrete incorporating the most up-to-date edition of the American Concrete Institute Code (ACI 318-14) requirements for the design of concrete structures. It includes a chapter on metric system in reinforced concrete design and construction. A new chapter on the design of formworks has been added which is of great value to students in the construction engineering programs along with practicing engineers and architects. This second edition also includes a new appendix with color images illustrating various concrete construction practices, and well-designed buildings. The ACI 318-14 constitutes the most extensive reorganization of the code in the past 40 years. References to the various sections of the ACI 318-14 are provided throughout the book to facilitate its use by students and professionals. Aimed at architecture, building construction, and undergraduate engineering students, the scope of concepts in this volume emphasize simplified and practical methods in the analysis and design of reinforced concrete. This is distinct from advanced, graduate engineering texts, where treatment of the subject centers around the theoretical and mathematical aspects of design. As in the first edition, this book adopts a step-by-step approach to solving analysis and design problems in reinforced concrete. Using a highly graphical and interactive approach in its use of detailed images and self-experimentation exercises, “Concrete Structures, Second Edition,” is tailored to the most practical questions and fundamental concepts of design of structures in reinforced concrete. The text stands as an ideal learning resource for civil engineering, building construction, and architecture students as well as a valuable reference for concrete structural design professionals in practice.

Book excerpt: Life Destiny is a very interesting concept. It’s a question that people often ask themselves. I've even asked myself questions about my own Life Destiny. What is my purpose here? Where is my life heading? Why do people treat me this way? Why did it happen to me? What is the meaning of it all? When it comes to Life Destiny, the questions are endless. This book will take you through a journey through some of the different stages of Life Destiny. The voyage of this book starts off with the inspiring chapter of ‘’Turning Lemons into Lemonade.’’ Then we will venture into the anger land of ‘’Ticked Off.’’ After that, we will calm down, breathe and we’ll arrive at ‘’Letting Life Flow.’’ After we are flowing for some time, we will be pulled into the sea of ‘’Depression.’’ Once we survive this, we will finally arrive at the last chapter of this book, ‘’What Does Life Mean?’’ The up and down cycles of life have touched us all at some point in our lives. It’s like a roller coaster ride that’s unpredictable. I've experienced this before. One minute my life was going great and then all of a sudden, an obstacle was thrown my way. During those times, I have asked myself these questions. What do I do? How do I handle it? How have others handled it? In some cases, knowing other people’s experiences with similar situations can bring clarity. This has helped me with some of my life decisions. Obstacles will come. That’s a fact. It’s not a matter of if; it’s a matter of when. The outcome can be affected by the decision of how it is managed. We will explore these things and more throughout this book. So fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride through this book of Life Destiny.

Book Seizing Your Divine Moment

Download or read book Seizing Your Divine Moment written by Erwin Raphael McManus and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2002-11-03 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this inspiring book, Erwin McManus uses the biblical account of Israel's war with the Philistines (1 Samuel 13 and 14) and the characters of Saul and Jonathan to demonstrate the difference between living a life of purpose and adventure, and living one of apathy and missed opportunity. In the midst of a less-than-hopeful battle, Saul-who should have been leading-rested beneath a pomegranate tree as Jonathan seized the divine moment that would impact the future of Israel. Through this story McManus artfully illustrates the eight characteristics of an adventurer's heart, what he calls "the Jonathan factor." Using powerful examples from his own life and ministry, along with fresh biblical teaching, McManus asserts that God crafts divine moments specific to each of us-priceless opportunities for us to actively engage in God's big-picture plan. Apathy and apprehension prevent us from being all we are meant to be for God's kingdom. But by developing the characteristics McManus outlines, Christians can move from mundane to miraculous living.

Download or read book My Life with Things written by Elizabeth Chin and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconventional and provocative, My Life with Things is Elizabeth Chin's meditation on her relationship with consumer goods and a critical statement on the politics and method of anthropology. Chin centers the book on diary entries that focus on everyday items—kitchen cabinet knobs, shoes, a piano—and uses them to intimately examine the ways consumption resonates with personal and social meaning: from writing love haikus about her favorite nail polish and discussing the racial implications of her tooth cap, to revealing how she used shopping to cope with a miscarriage and contemplating how her young daughter came to think that she needed Lunesta. Throughout, Chin keeps Karl Marx and his family's relationship to their possessions in mind, drawing parallels between Marx's napkins, the production of late nineteenth-century table linens, and Chin's own vintage linen collection. Unflinchingly and refreshingly honest, Chin unlocks the complexities of her attachments to, reliance on, and complicated relationships with her things. In so doing, she prompts readers to reconsider their own consumption, as well as their assumptions about the possibilities for creative scholarship.

Download or read book The Good Life in a Technological Age written by Philip Brey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern technology has changed the way we live, work, play, communicate, fight, love, and die. Yet few works have systematically explored these changes in light of their implications for individual and social welfare. How can we conceptualize and evaluate the influence of technology on human well-being? Bringing together scholars from a cross-section of disciplines, this volume combines an empirical investigation of technology and its social, psychological, and political effects, and a philosophical analysis and evaluation of the implications of such effects.
