Book Papers Presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies Held in Oxford 2003

Download or read book Papers Presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies Held in Oxford 2003 written by Frances Margaret Young and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2003 (see also Studia Patristica 39, 40, 41 and 42). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

  • Author : George Guiver

Download or read book Company of Voices written by George Guiver and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and updated edition of a much-praised work, this is vital reading for anyone who wishes to understand the nature of prayer. Down-to-earth and accessible, yet applauded for its scholarship, it is, as reviewers said of the first edition, truly exciting to read and full of help and sympathy for the Christian who finds prayer difficult. Company of Voices begins with a problem that is all too recognizable. If all that Christianity claims about life and living is true, then prayer ought to be the most natural activity in the world. Yet apart from moments of crisis when prayer arises spontaneously, it is mostly an added extra to the business of daily living, something that is a struggle to find time for. George Guiver, CR, sets out to find why this should be so. His search takes him to study the practice of daily prayer throughout the church's history: the offering of prayer several times a day in churches, cathedrals and monasteries, and individuals at their private payer. He considers the form and content of prayers handed down over the centuries, prayer and human nature, our understanding of the church, the varying formulas of prayer in different spiritual traditions, symbolism and gesture, prayer as work and play, wordless prayer, and much more--all with the aim of learning from the past for the needs of today. Truly breathtaking in its scope, this important study deserves its reputation as a contemporary spiritual classic.

Book Liturgical Time and Space

Download or read book Liturgical Time and Space written by Anscar J. Chupungco and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final volume in the Handbook for Liturgical Studies series, Volume V: Liturgical Time and Space contains the concluding material for an integral study of the liturgy. It opens with a preliminary notion of time and space, before discussing in detail three types of liturgical celebrations on which time and space have a direct and particular bearing. The first of these is the Liturgy of the Hours. This topic is developed in the light of the early Christian tradition until the fourth century and its subsequent forms in both East and West. The second is the Liturgical Year, traditionally called the anni circulas. The development of the Liturgical Year during the first four centuries is reviewed. This is followed by adetaled study of the Byzantine, Roman, and non-Roman Western tradition. It concludes with the theology and spirituality of the Liturgical Year wherein the mystery of Christ as a saving event is made present in time, so that the faithful may lay hold of it through the Word and the sacraments. The theology of liturgical space is drawn from the mutual interaction between the assembled community, which gives meaning to the place of assembly, and the place itself, which upholds and signifies community. Book Liturgical Hermeneutics of Sacred Scripture

Download or read book Liturgical Hermeneutics of Sacred Scripture written by Marco Benini and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to explore what a liturgical approach to the Bible looks like and what hermeneutical implications this might have: How does the liturgy celebrate, understand, and communicate Scripture? The starting point is Pope Benedict's affirmation that "a faith-filled understanding of sacred Scripture must always refer back to the liturgy" (Verbum Domini 52). The first part of the book (based on SC 24) provides significant examples to demonstrate: The liturgical order of readings intertextually combines Old Testament and New Testament readings using manifold hermeneutical principles, specifically how the psalms show the wide range of interpretations the liturgy employs. Prayers are biblically inspired and help to appropriate Scripture personally. The hymns convey Scripture in a poetic way. Signs and actions such as foot-washing or the Ephphetha rite enact Scripture. The study considers the Mass, the sacraments and the Liturgy of the Hours. In the second part, Benini systematically focuses on the various dimensions of liturgical hermeneutics of the Bible, which emerge from the first part. The study reflects the approaches the liturgy offers to Scripture and its liturgical reception. It explores theological aspects such as the unity of the two Testaments in Christ's paschal mystery or the anamnesis as a central category in both Scripture and liturgy. The liturgy does not understand Scripture primarily as a document of the past, but celebrates it as a current and living "Word of the Lord," as a medium of encounter with God: Scripture is sacramental. Liturgical Hermeneutics of Sacred Scripture seeks to contribute not only to the comparison of the Roman, Ambrosian, and Byzantine Rite regarding the Word of God, but most of all to the overall "liturgical approach" to Scripture. As such, it promotes an interdisciplinary dialogue of liturgical and biblical studies.

Book The Sabaite Heritage in the Orthodox Church from the Fifth Century to the Present

Download or read book The Sabaite Heritage in the Orthodox Church from the Fifth Century to the Present written by Joseph Patrich and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Sabas (439-532 CE), was one of the principal leaders of Palestinian monasticism, that had flourished in the sixth century in the desert of Jerusalem. As an abbot he was the first in Palestine to formulate a monastic rule in writing, and his activity as an ecclesiastical leader bore upon the life of the entire Christian community in the Holy land. He and his monks were active in the theological disputes that affected the fate of the Christian Church of Palestine, and shaped it as a stronghold of Orthodoxy. But his activity has transcended his place and time. His largest monastery - the Great Laura (Mar saba), functioned from the sixth to the ninth century as the intellectual centre of the See of Jerusalem. The most distinguished among its authors were Cyril of Scythopolis, Leontius of Byzantium, John Moschus and Sophronius, Antiochus Monachos, John of Damascus, Cosmas the Hymnographer, Leontius of Damascus and Stephen Mansur. Their treatises on dogma, and prayer, shaped Orthodox theology, liturgy and hymnography in Palestine and beyond. This literary activity in Greek was complemented by scribal activity of copying and translating of Greek manuscripts into Arabic and Georgian. There was also original composition in Arabic by Theodore Abu Qurrah and others. Monastic life in Mar Saba, that continued under Muslim rule with only short intermissions, preserved the Sabaite tradition, and contributed to its reputation, parallel to that of Jerusalem. Sabaite monks were renown as paragons of monasticism and dogma, who had inspired monastic and ecclesiastical reformers in later centuries throughout the Orthodox world. Its fame spread far and wide, from Rome and North Africa in the west, to Serbia, Russia and Georgia in the east, affecting Christian dogma and liturgy therein. The thirty-one studies included in this volume, each written by an expert in his field, present the various facets of the Sabaite heritage in the Orthodox Church, from the sixth century to the present.
