Book excerpt: To exalt spiritual beauty through material splendor -- this was the goal of the soaring cathedrals, the shimmering stained-glass windows and the magnificent liturgical vessels. These sacred objects fashioned with such love and attention so beautifully express in color, light and form what the liturgy attempts to say with the prescribed prayers and the ceremonial acts of the worship service. - Foreword.

Download or read book Objects in Context Objects in Use written by Luke Lavan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book promotes the study of material spatiality in late antiquity: not just the study of buildings, but of the people, dress and objects used within them, drawing on all available source material. It seeks to explore the material world as it was lived in late antiquity, in an interpretative inquiry, rather than simply describing the evidence that has survived until today. The volume presents a series of comprehensive bibliographic essays which provide an overview of relevant literature, along with discussions of the nature of the sources, of relevant approaches and field methods. The main section of the book explores domestic space, vessels in context, dress, shops and workshops, religious space, and military space. Synthetic papers drawing on a wide range of archaeological, art-historical and textual sources are complemented by case-studies of context-rich late antique sites in the East Mediterranean and elsewhere, including Pella, Dura-Europos, Scythopolis, and Sagalassos.

Book The Liturgy of the Medieval Church

Download or read book The Liturgy of the Medieval Church written by Thomas Heffernan and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to address the needs of teachers and advanced students who are preparing classes on the Middle Ages or who find themselves confounded in their studies by reference to the various liturgies that were fundamental to the lives of medieval peoples. In a series of essays, scholars of the liturgy examine The Shape of the Liturgical Year, Particular Liturgies, The Physical Setting of the Liturgy, The Liturgy and Books, and Liturgy and the Arts. A concluding essay, which originated in notes left behind by the late C. Clifford Flanigan, seeks to open the field, to examine liturgy within the larger and more inclusive category of ritual. The essays are intended to be introductory but to provide the basic facts and the essential bibliography for further study. They approach particular problems assuming a knowledge of medieval Europe but little expertise in liturgical studies per se.

Book Liturgy s Imagined Past s

Download or read book Liturgy s Imagined Past s written by Teresa Berger and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book calls attention to the importance of scholarly reflection on the writing of liturgical history. The essays not only probe the impact of important shifts in historiography but also present new scholarship that promises to reconfigure some of the established images of liturgy's past. Based on papers presented at the 2014 Yale Institute of Sacred Music Liturgy Conference, Liturgy's Imagined Past/s seeks to invigorate discussion of methodologies and materials in contemporary writings on liturgy's pasts and to resource such writing at a point in time when formidable questions are being posed about the way in which historians construct the object of their inquiry.
