Book Littleton Washington s Journal

Download or read book Littleton Washington s Journal written by Douglas Lee Gibboney and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-06-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOW AVAILABLE! THE NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED MEMOIRS OF THE CONFEDERATE SECRETARY OF STATES CHIEF AIDE! As seen on Book TV! Born in the District of Columbia to one of the First Families of Virginia, Littleton Q. Washington attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, before securing a clerkship at the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1855, he joined the U.S. Customs House in San Francisco and became embroiled in that citys Vigilante Uprising. Dismissed from his patronage job during James Buchanans administration, Washington made a wild and dangerous journey home across Mexico, which was then entering a bloody reform war. Returning to the District of Columbia, Littleton tried using his government connections to earn a living as a lobbyist but he was not financially successful. He also became more active in journalism and party politics. An ardent secessionist, Washington helped send secret information to South Carolinas governor during the Fort Sumter crisis. In April 1861, he fled from the District of Columbia and traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, where he secured a lieutenants commission in the Confederate Army from Jefferson Davis. Washington served at the battle of First Bull Run. He then briefly edited the Richmond Examiner before joining the Confederate State Department where he worked as the chief aide to Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. He also enlisted in the home guard called out to defend the Confederate capital in 1863 and 1864. Littleton was a close friend of Mary Chesnut and is mentioned frequently in her famous diary. This book is a valuable reference as another first-person account of wartime Richmond. The journal offers a fascinating character study of one man caught up in the most turbulent period of American history. LITTLETON WASHINGTONS JOURNAL IS REFERENCED NUMEROUS TIMES IN WILLIAM C. DAVIS NEW HISTORY OF THE CONFEDERACY "LOOK AWAY!" About the Editor: Douglas Lee Gibboney is the author of several books, including "Stonewall Jackson at Gettysburg," "Murder at Cleaver Stadium" and "Tragic Glory." His CD of original songs, "Guitars, Girls & Motels," is available through Amazon.com.

Download or read book Look Away written by William C. Davis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-04-12 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William C. Davis, one of America's best Civil War historians, here offers a definitive portrait of the Confederacy unlike any that has come before. Drawing on decades of writing and research among an unprecedented number of archives, Look Away! tells the story of the Confederate States of America not simply as a military saga (although it is that), but rather as a full portrait of a society and incipient nation. The first history of the Confederacy in decades, the culmination of a great scholar's career, Look Away! combines politics, economics, and social history to set a new standard for its subject. Previous histories have focused on familiar commanders such as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, but Davis's canvas is much broader. From firebrand politicians like Robert Barnwell Rhett and William L. Yancey, who pushed for secession long before the public supported it; to Dr. Samuel Cartwright, who persuaded many Southerners of the natural inferiority of their slaves; to the women of Richmond, who rioted over bread shortages in 1863, Davis presents a rich new face of the Confederate nation. He recounts familiar stories of battles won and lost, but also little-known economic stories of a desperate government that socialized the salt industry, home-front stories of the rangers and marauders who preyed on their fellow Confederates, and an account of the steady breakdown of law, culminating in near anarchy in some states. Never has the Confederacy been so vividly brought to life as a full society, riven with political and economic conflicts beneath its more loudly publicized military battles. Davis's astonishingly thorough primary research has ranged across the 800-odd newspapers that were in operation during the war, but also across the personal papers of over a hundred Southern leaders and ordinary citizens. He quotes from letters and diaries throughout the narrative, revealing the Confederacy through the words of the Confederates themselves. Like any society, especially in the early stages of nation-building and the devastating stages of warfare, the Confederacy was not one thing but many things to many people. One thing, however, was shared by all: the belief that the South offered a necessary evolution of American democracy. Look Away! offers a dramatic and definitive account of one of America's most searing episodes.

Book American Glass

Download or read book American Glass written by John Stuart Gordon and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Glass can be decorative or utilitarian, and its forms often reflect technological innovations and social change. Drawing on an insightful selection from the Yale University Art Gallery and other collections at Yale, American Glass illuminates the vital and often intimate roles that glass has played in the nation's art and culture. Spectacularly illustrated, the publication showcases eighteenth-century mold-blown vessels, nineteenth-century pressed glass, innovative studio work, and luminous stained-glass windows by John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany, the latter reproduced as a lush gatefold. These are considered alongside beguiling objects that broaden our expectations of glass and speak to the centrality of the medium in American life, including one of the oldest complex microscopes in the United States, an early Edison light bulb, glass-plate photography, jewelry, and more. With an essay on the history of collecting American glass and discussions of each object that present new scholarship, this engaging book tells the long and rich history of glass in America--from prehistoric minerals to contemporary sculptures"--Dust jacket front flap.
