Book excerpt: An Afterlife Fantasy by award winning author Eric Witchey. One human soul and a little respect isn't too much to ask for, but both are hard to get if you've only been a death for a thousand years.Shunned by other grim reapers, Littlest Death yearns for the respect given to deaths who bring human souls from Overworld into Underworld. She has only been a grim reaper for a thousand years, but she works hard at the jobs she's given. Really hard! No other death gathers in MILLIONS of souls at a time like she does. Okay, they are just the souls of fungi, bacteria, and single-celled critters like amoebas, but¿MILLIONS! If she could bring in just one human soul, the other deaths would stop looking down on her. She sets out to spy on the most accomplished death in the history of dying, Oldest Death. She figures she can learn a few things from him. And, of course, she does. She just doesn't learn what she thought she would learn, and the learning comes hard. Desperate to become a real death, frustrated by humans and their attachments to one another, hounded by a Hell Puppy, ridiculed by other deaths, and undermined by her own ambition, she journeys the Earth and the Underworld in search of a trick that will let her gain the respect she believes she deserves. Unfortunately, her actions hurt the living, undermine the natural order, and threaten the eternal flow of souls between life and death. By the time she understands the damage she's done, it may be too late to save herself and the souls she has hurt.

Book excerpt: Reuben Ortozo is four feet two inches tall, but he doesn't let that stop him. The appellate courtroom that he presides in sells decisions as if they had been placed on an online auction site. The California Supreme Court has to review enough of the bought decisions, and the corruption becomes obvious. The judges don't want to turn the appellate division in because they upheld many of the decisions. The Chief Judge connives to force an honest judge off the bench after planting the idea of nominating Reuben Ortotzo in the mind of California's governor, Brian Bryan. After being seated on the court it becomes apparent that Reuben is still doing business with his former collegues, and becoming a sore spot for his fellow colleagues who now feel a need to protect him, so that they can protect the court's reputation. The Chief Justice attempts to persuade Reuben to change his ways, but Reuben reminds him that the court protects their own, and he's one of their own. With no alternatives the court finds Reuben Ortotzo guilty in absentia, and sentences him to death with special circumstances. They hire a hit man to carry out the sentence.

Book excerpt: "Compelling, tragic, comic, tender and mystical... Combines the historical significance of Kathryn Stockett's The Help with the wisdom of Toni Morrison's Beloved." —Minneapolis Star Tribune Rich in mood and atmosphere, The Healing is a warmhearted novel about the unbreakable bonds between three generations of female healers and their power to restore the body, the spirit, and the soul. In Antebellum Mississippi, Granada Satterfield has the mixed fortune to be born on the same day that her plantation mistress's daughter, Becky, dies of cholera. Believing that the newborn possesses some of her daughter's spirit, the Mistress Amanda adopts Granada, dolling her up in Becky's dresses and giving her a special place in the family despite her husband's protests. But when The Master brings a woman named Polly Shine to help quell the debilitating plague that is sweeping through the slave quarters, Granada's life changes. For Polly sees something in the young girl, a spark of "The Healing," and a domestic battle of wills begins, one that will bring the two closer but that will ultimately lead to a great tragedy. And seventy-five years later, Granada, still living on the abandoned plantation long after slavery ended, must revive the buried memories before history repeats itself. Inspirational and suspenseful, The Healing is the kind of historical fiction readers can’t put down—and can’t wait to recommend once they’ve finished. "A remarkable rite-of-passage novel with an unforgettable character. . . . The Healing transcends any clichés of the genre with its captivating, at times almost lyrical, prose; its firm grasp of history; vivid scenes; and vital, fully realized people, particularly the slaves with their many shades of color and modes of survival." —The Associated Press
