Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lifetime of Baseball KnowledgeLittle Things Analytics is a new concept and it appears in this book for the first time anywhere. The underlying math will explain why teams who do the little things best win the games. Everyone knows that errors and misplays hurt a team's odds of winning a game. In this expanded edition of LTWBG, you'll see mathematically how those odds tend to affect a game and how those odds inflate as the game progresses. As a player, you'll learn to bear down harder in later innings. As a coach, LTWBG will tell you how to get your players to focus harder to keep a game from getting away. As a fan, this book will improve your knowledge of the game and enhance your viewing enjoyment.LTWBG is used as a teaching text for baseball and softball at the Universities of Clemson and Northern Iowa. The book is endorsed by former Major Leaguer players Jake Gibbs (Yankees, later head coach at University of Mississippi) and Ed Watt (Orioles, Cubs, Phillies, later 30-year Triple-A pitching coach), as well as many other coaches. If you're playing the game and want to improve, want to learn the fine points to improve your coaching, or are trying to get a better grasp the fine points in order to enjoy spectating to a higher degree, Little Things Win Big Games covers every position, situation, and skill. This book is detailed enough for the most knowledgeable reader, yet simple enough for sub-teens to comprehend.Among the many laudatory comments about Little Things Win Big Games, Kirkus Reviews said the following: "This is as well-crafted an introduction to baseball as one is likely to find in print, an excellent primer on the basics of the great American pastime. Gabe walks readers through the various components of the game, discussing the basic aspects of every position, and then provides insights into other key elements, such as sliding and bunting. The book accompanies each lesson with helpful pictures, which are particularly indispensable when teaching such things as proper hitting stance. It's impressively comprehensive, covering everything from proper infielder footwork to the mechanics of pitching." Larry Gabe has been a baseball player and fan since early grade school, learning from some of the best coaches and baseball minds in the country. He excelled at summer baseball and at the high school, college, and semi-pro levels, but abandoned his professional aspirations for a more predictable career. In Little Things Win Big Games Gabe shares all the knowledge he's accumulated in over 60+ years of playing and watching the game. In this copiously illustrated book (149 pictures and diagrams), you'll learn all the basics and advanced techniques that will help you improve your game, no matter what your position on defense or spot in the batting order. Even the most advanced player will pick up things he isn't doing properly, while the young player will learn the right way to play the game, how to be mentally prepared and have a competitive edge over his opponents.

The only difference is the pictures are in black-and-white instead of color. If cost is a consideration, here's the solution. Whether you're a coach, player, or fan you can enhance your knowledge of baseball by reading Little Things Win Big Games. Many knowledgeable experts say things like, "There is no comparable book. This one has it all." So, just what is "all?" LTWBG has a separate chapter on such things as hitting, pitching, baserunning, and every defensive position in the game. The book stresses the how and why of baseball and is enhanced by over 200 pictures and illustrations. Each chapter also has a section on "The Drills" wherein precise training exercises are provided to hone the skills described. By following the recommendations in this book, a player will automatically do the right thing in any situation. A player really has no time to think in the middle of a play; everything has to come automatically. A coach can get the very best from his team by employing and instilling the knowledge provided in LTWBG. Several major universities use this this book as a teaching text, which should tell you quite a bit. And finally, fans will gain more enjoyment from watching a game when they know exactly what's happening or what should have happened, and why. Special Advisory: As a coach or player, if you don't absorb and apply the principles in LTWBG, you'd better hope your opponents don't either. Little Things Win Big Games!

Book The Little Things That Matter in the Big Game

Download or read book The Little Things That Matter in the Big Game written by Kathy Boehlert and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did a high school varsity basketball team and a nine-year-old boy with cancer have to do with each other during the 20102011 season? The basketball team encouraged and lifted up the nine-year-old. The nine-year-old encouraged and lifted up the basketball team. This is the story of how a local high school basketball team helped my son, Patrick, through the difficult chemotherapy he was receiving to treat stage three acute lymphoblastic lymphoma. They didnt know anything about Patrick other than that he was a big fan when the season started. As the season went on, all thirteen players began to reach out to Patrick; eventually he became part of the team. Their interactions and support gave Patrick windows of time when he was not a cancer patient. He was a fan and a teammate. Patrick served as an example to the team that there is more to life than basketball. He showed them that life is The Big Game and that the little things really do matter. I think this is a great story, and all young athletes should read this. It reminds us all that there is always somebody watching you and you are making a difference in their life, one way or another. Dan Harwood, teacher and basketball coach at Magruder High School

Book excerpt: Designed specifically for young baseball coaches at all levels, this book would also be a great tool for player and parent. Practicing for Perfection provides drills for each position and skill set in baseball and softball, specific fundamental drills that are key to performanceJust playing the game will improve a player's performance, but it would take a long time to reach any level of proficiency, plus you avoid the player learning bad habits that then must be broken to learn the "Right Way."Meanwhile, the player's team probably will not be too successful. This book will shorten the learning curve dramatically, from years to just weeks. Players who practice these drills diligently will maximize their natural athletic abilities and have an advantage over nearly every opponent they face. The narrative is written clearly, concisely, and is amplified with over 60 photographs that demonstrate exactly what the narrative says. A player, coach, or parent can read AND see exactly what needs to be done. You would need to buy quite a few books to get all the information contained in just this volume. LTWBG: Practicing for Perfection is "one-stop shopping" at its best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[Little Things Win Big Games is] a comprehensive instructional manual for the game of baseball. In his debut, Gabe walks readers through the various components of the game, discussing the basic aspects of every position, and then provides in-sights into other key elements, such as sliding and bunting. "The book accompanies each lesson with helpful pictures, which are particularly indispensable when teaching such things as proper hitting stance. It's impressively comprehensive, covering everything from proper infielder footwork to the mechanics of pitching. "Gabe repeatedly returns to the psychological aspect of the game; at one point, he describes a player's proper mental comportment as a combination of intense focus and an unrelenting desire to win: "The killer instinct is a tool you need to use daily, even in batting practice. It brings your concentration up to another level." "This is as well-crafted an introduction to baseball as one is likely to find in print. An excellent primer on the basics of the great American pastime."-Kirkus ReviewsENDORSEMENT BY A PROFESSIONALI found that Larry Gabe's new book on Baseball Fundamentals, "Little Things Win Big Games", meets a real need in our world of diminishing teaching of the basics of the game of Baseball. It starts in Little League with many volunteer coaches who have a basic lack of knowledge about baseball. Many of these "coaches" have never played beyond Little League or may not have even played baseball at all.The continuation of lack of learning continues through many AAU teams where the focus is on the "WOW" factors, how hard do you throw, how far can you hit a baseball. When the players reach high school most of the focus is on getting ready for the baseball season which starts in a short period of time, result, very limited time spent on fundamentals. Is it any wonder that when a young player gets to college or turns professional that there are many college and Professional coaches complaining that these young players have little understanding of the fine points of baseball that they should have learned starting at age 10-12 years of age?If you want to increase the quality of your baseball or Softball program, your coaches and your players need to read and study "Little Things Win Big Games" then practice the "Right Way", doing all the little things right that Gabe brings forth in this book. You need to get your players to the point that they never think about what they need to do---they simply react to the situation and do the little things the right way. All positions and skill sets are covered in the book. The teams that do the little things best win the games, always have and always will!!I am happy to be able to endorse Little Things Win Big Games. It is a high-quality book that has the basics of the game I love, written and illustrated (147 pictures) in a very clear concise manner. It will help coaches and players learn the correct way to play the game which will enable them to play Mentally Alert and capitalize on every mistakes made by their opposition. You will set your program and your players apart from their peer group by using "Little Things Win Big Games". Every Coach should use this book!!Jake GibbsNew York Yankees catcher/third baseman 1962-71University of Mississippi Baseball Coach 1972-90The authors of Little Things Win Big Games were tutored by some of the best baseball minds in the country from a very young age. They were exposed to the "right way" to play the game and learned very well. Luckily, they are also proficient in sharing their knowledge of the game of baseball so splendidly in this book.If you have children or grandchildren or neighbor kids who are playing baseball but aren't getting the type of coaching one might hope for, Little Things Win Big Games will be the foundation that will set your youngsters apart from their peers.

Book Stadium Status

Download or read book Stadium Status written by John Brubaker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business as usual is ancient history. Large corporations, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and even CEOs and politicians must make the move from simply selling a product or service to delivering a mind-blowing customer experience. They have to learn to play at the level athletes and entertainers call stadium status. Stadium status is that elusive place every coach, athlete, entertainer, and performer strives to reach. It’s moving from being an opening act to the headliner, from performing on a small stage to the greatest stage in the largest venue possible: a sold out stadium. Everything starts from humble beginnings; talent and work ethic might get you in the game, but stadium status takes strategy – and that starts with a vision. John Brubaker shares his personal experiences as a successful radio personality, coach, and executive consultant, and reveals the strategies employed by country musicians, teams, and brands to build their fan base and separate themselves from the competition. He explains exactly how readers can implement these same tactics to achieve better results in their own endeavors. Stadium Status’ real-world examples demonstrate that gaining a fresh perspective and applying ideas from outside your industry are what will truly elevate your performance.

Book excerpt: When fall rolls into winter, most sports fans in Nebraska long for spring football. But Coach Tim Miles has given hibernating fans a reason to cheer through winter for the first time in twenty years. Since taking over the men's basketball program in 2012, Miles has gone from being relatively unknown outside college coaching circles to a big name on the national stage as an up-and-coming, funny, and fan-friendly college coach. Miles scores big with Nebraska's fans with his social media acumen--he tweets during halftime--and his fan interaction--he applied (and failed) to become the leader of the student section at Pinnacle Bank Arena. But on the court and in practice, Miles is all about winning. His combination of toughness, togetherness, and humor has rejuvenated Nebraska basketball. Nebrasketball provides a full-access account of Tim Miles's path to Nebraska and his team's inaugural season in the $186 million Pinnacle Bank Arena. With full access to Miles and the team, Scott Winter provides basketball fans with an intimate look at a rising star in college basketball, detailing what it's like to coach an NCAA men's program today with all of its triumphs and struggles, along with Miles's larger story as a transformational coach who has made Nebraska basketball, and other college programs, relevant. The book also shows the small-town legacy and tenacity that created Miles, including his mother's prodding, his benching as a college player, and his significant history of losing, which he claims was his most important mentor.

Book The Sixth Man

Download or read book The Sixth Man written by Andre Iguodala and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **The Instant National Bestseller** The standout memoir from NBA powerhouse Andre Iguodala, the indomitable sixth man of the Golden State Warriors. Andre Iguodala is one of the most admired players in the NBA. And fresh off the Warriors’ fifth Finals appearance in five years, his game has never been stronger. Off the court, Iguodala has earned respect, too—for his successful tech investments, his philanthropy, and increasingly for his contributions to the conversation about race in America. It is no surprise, then, that in his first book, Andre, with his cowriter Carvell Wallace, has pushed himself to go further than he ever has before about his life, not only as an athlete but about what makes him who he is at his core. The Sixth Man traces Andre’s journey from childhood in his Illinois hometown to his Bay Area home court today. Basketball has always been there. But this is the story, too, of his experience of the conflict and racial tension always at hand in a professional league made up largely of African American men; of whether and why the athlete owes the total sacrifice of his body; of the relationship between competition and brotherhood among the players of one of history’s most glorious championship teams. And of what motivates an athlete to keep striving for more once they’ve already achieved the highest level of play they could have dreamed. On drive, on leadership, on pain, on accomplishment, on the shame of being given a role, and the glory of taking a role on: This is a powerful memoir of life and basketball that reveals new depths to the superstar athlete, and offers tremendous insight into most urgent stories being told in American society today.

Download or read book Men in White written by Chris Raymond and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling sports story, Men in White is the tale of the young athletes who defied the doomsayers and rescued Penn State’s football program from the horrors of the Jerry Sandusky scandal—told by the players themselves. On November 5, 2011, the news that Jerry Sandusky had been charged with forty counts of child molestation rocked Penn State’s leafy campus, unseating the university president, the athletic director, and head coach Joe Paterno—devastating the football program he had erected and diligently maintained over half a century. Men in White recounts the saga of the student athletes who elected to stay and rebuild the program in the face of crippling NCAA sanctions, blistering heat from the outraged media, and radio silence from the adults in the school’s administration. With the once proud program in free fall and their personal fortunes in peril, these young men refused to back down, toiling for five long seasons to rehabilitate the program and its ideals, culminating in the stirring come-from-behind defeat of Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game. Their story echoes that of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, a cast of young men—colossal underdogs—who boldly accepted the challenge of a lifetime, achieving success while shouldering the weight of a bruising political drama.
