Book Little Stories of England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Little Stories of England Classic Reprint written by Maude Barrows Dutton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Stories of England There are two reasons why such books as this may well occasionally receive a period Of the regu lar school time. In that way only will the impor tance of general reading be properly impressed upon many pupils. Only in that way, too, will the teacher have opportunity to give needed ideas about the proper method of general reading. Textbooks in school are usually covered so slowly that children rebel if they have preserved enough, individuality to harbor ideas Of their own. And, as a conse quence, any books that they are free to read in their own way they cover altogether too rapidly. They need to learn a middle way. By reading such stories as these with a class, or by talking them over one by one with a class after the latter have read them, the teacher can give many valuable facts about method that will influence all later general reading. Since general reading of books, maga zines, and papers, as distinguished from strenuous study Of a particular text, constitutes the main part of reading for most persons after their school is past, the magnitude Of this matter is easily apparent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Arthur's History of England Though I have not the happiness to be a mother, my love of children has led me to think a good deal about them. Their amusements, and their lessons. This little history was written for a real little arthur, and I have endeavoured to write it nearly as I would tell it to an intelligent child. I well remember what I wanted to be told myself, in addition to what I found in my lesson-book, when I was first allowed to read the History of England, and I hope I have answered most of the questions I recollect to have wished to ask. I may have failed in satisfying the almost bound less inquiries of intelligent children; and I could wish that the mother or governess, who may put this little book into the hands of her pupils, would read each chapter herself before she gives it to a child, that she may be ready with answers to such questions as the chapter may suggest. Book The Classic Short Story 1870 1925

Download or read book The Classic Short Story 1870 1925 written by Florence Goyet and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to construct a nuanced narrative or complex character in the constrained form of the short story has sometimes been seen as the ultimate test of an author's creativity. Yet during the time when the short story was at its most popular - the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - even the greatest writers followed strict generic conventions that were far from subtle. This expanded and updated translation of Florence Goyet's influential La Nouvelle, 1870-1925: Description d'un genre à son apogée (Paris, 1993) is the only study to focus exclusively on this classic period across different continents. Ranging through French, English, Italian, Russian and Japanese writing - particularly the stories of Guy de Maupassant, Henry James, Giovanni Verga, Anton Chekhov and Akutagawa Ry?nosuke - Goyet shows that these authors were able to create brilliant and successful short stories using the very simple 'tools of brevity' of that period. In this challenging and far-reaching study, Goyet looks at classic short stories in the context in which they were read at the time: cheap newspapers and higher-end periodicals. She demonstrates that, despite the apparent intention of these stories to question bourgeois ideals, they mostly affirmed the prejudices of their readers. In doing so, her book forces us to re-think our preconceptions about this 'forgotten' genre.

This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Stories for Little People The vocabulary used in this first supplementary reading-book is mainly confined to that found in five leading First Readers. For the most part, each lesson is a complete story. By story is meant a dramatic incident, however slight. The children's interest is gener ally better held by a story than by any other form of reading. It is noticeable in some First Readers that there is seldom any sequence of stories. Each new lesson introduces a fresh set of nouns and verbs bearing no relation to those of the story preceding. Many of these stories are arranged in little groups, the object being to retain the child's inter est in the characters, and the repeated use of the same, or similar, words, phrases, sentences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England Thirdly, I have clung pretty closely to the thread of English history, only introducing mention of other countries when their connection with England was especially close. Since England's story is so long and so eventful, I have felt that it had better here be told as simply, clearly, and continuously as possible, for its own sake, rather than to complicate it by including many facts drawn from the history of other countries. Download or read book Little Journey to England and Wales Classic Reprint written by Marian M. George and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journey to England and Wales "A snug little island! A bright little, tight little island! Search the globe round, And none can be found So happy as this little island." You and I may not agree with the person who wrote this bit of verse about England, but our English ancestors believed it firmly. To them "Old England" was the most beautiful spot on earth. We can understand why America did not seem an attractive country to them, for they endured much suffering and hardship during the first few years they spent here. When they left their comfortable homes in England and came to America they found but a wilderness. Much of the time their lives were in danger from unfriendly Indians, and in addition to this they sometimes suffered for lack of food and other necessities, so we cannot wonder at their looking back upon England as a happier place in which to live. They told their children stories of the pleasant years spent in the old home in England, and these children came to have something of the same affection for the mother country as the parents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History in Short Stories This little book is not designed to be a History of England. It is, first, a compendium of facts about England, its history, government, and antiquities, - facts which all English-speaking people ought to know, and which are not readily accessible to those Americans who do not have good libraries at hand. It contains, secondly, a series of sketches of each of the English monarchs; not histories of their reigns or complete biographies, but estimates of the historical importance of each. The English kings previous to the Hanoverians are the central figures of English history. The dates and other facts here given have been collated with the greatest care. The intelligent reader need not be informed that Freeman, J. R. Green, Pearson, and others are entirely reconstructing English history, and fresh estimates of men and events are resulting.
