Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George runs eagerly to the schoolyard to celebrate the Fourth of July. He is wearing new shoes and can hardly wait to show them to his classmates. George has never before had new shoes and is surprised that his father bought them for him. Shortly after arriving at the school grounds, a few boys invite him to join them. George is pleases to be invited . The boys talk about George’s news shoes and say they are sure his is going to win the foot race. Two of the boys, Calvin and Tom, are the town bullies, and George is surprised that they are being so nice to him. One of the bullies suggests they all have a practice race. George agrees, but as soon as he begins to run, something hard hits his legs and he falls. When he falls, the nickels he is holding fly from his hand. The boys laugh and call him a dumb immigrant. Though he begs for his nickels, they laugh and toss the coins back and forth to each other. George runs from the schoolyard and follows a dry wash (gully) bed back to the family ranch. He climbs a small hill where he can look down at the valley below. As he sobs and prays, his sobs are interrupted by the whinny of a horse. George looks up and sees a herd of wild horses grazing in the valley. He notices a little black horse that seems to be looking right at George. “Are you lonely like me?” Do you need a friend?” George whispers to himself. Instantly the horses begin to gallop away and soon disappear in a nearby canyon. From that day forward, George often thinks about the little black horse. One morning when he hides behind a big rock to watch the wild horses drink at the creek, he does not see the little black horse. A terrible, empty feeling fills his heart. Suddenly, he hears a snorting sound and turning carefully around, he see the beautiful, black horse standing behind him. George and the horse stare quietly at one another until the leader of the herd calls and the little horse races off to join his companions. A few weeks later, George and his brothers are asked help their father’s friends, the Johansens, catch some wild horses. “You’re too young to be catching a wild horse,” his dad warns. “You can only go along to keep the horses from running west.” After the roundup, George looks for the little black horse and sees him walking very slowly and alone toward Coal Canyon. George runs to the canyon and finds the horse standing quietly on a side hill. The horse is exhausted and allows George to herd him down the canyon and into the family corral. With Dad’s help, George trains the little horse, and on his eleventh birthday he rides the horse triumphantly out of the corral. The following year, George rides his horse in the Fourth-of-July horse race. Before the race begins, he sits nervously on his horse. Calvin and Tom Meens point at George and laugh. The race starts and George’s horse runs so fast that George feels like he is flying. When the race ends, George hears a lot of cheering. However, until the mayor runs toward him shouting, “You won,” George doesn’t realize his horse is the winner. That day, George decides to name his horse Little Shot because the mayor says the horse runs like a bullet out of a 30-30 rifle. Winning the horse race was the start of many exciting experiences, challenges and adventures George has with his wonderful horse. The third year of riding Little Shot in the Fourth of July horse race, the running horses are startled when a motor car honks its horn. Frightened, the horses rear and bumped into each other. Angry people shout at the driver. Trying to get away from the commotion, Little Shot runs off the road. Sadly, he bangs his shoulder against a tree. The tree has a limb that has been cut but is sticking out like a knife. The sharp point of the limb stabs Little Shot. Blood immediately oozes out of the horse’s shoulder and down his front leg. In the meantime, another horse has calmed and is running down the

Book The Longest Shot

Download or read book The Longest Shot written by John Eisenberg and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the first Saturday in May every year in Louisville, Kentucky, shortly after 5:30 PM, a new horse attains racing immortality. The Kentucky Derby is like no other race, and its winners are the finest horses in the world. Covered in rich red roses, surrounded by flashing cameras and admiring crowds, these instant celebrities bear names like Citation, Secretariat, Spectacular Bid, and Seattle Slew. They're worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. But in 1992, a funny thing happened on the way to the roses. The rattling roar of 130,000 voices tailed off into a high, hollow shriek as the horses crossed the finish line. Lil E. Tee? ABC broadcasters knew nothing about him, but they weren't alone. Who knew about Lil E. Tee? A blacksmith in Ocala, Florida, a veterinary surgeon in Ringoes, New Jersey, a trainer a Calder Race Course, and a few other people used to dealing with average horses knew this horse -- and realized what a long shot Lil E. Tee really was. On a Pennsylvania farm that raised mostly trotting horses, a colt with a dime-store pedigree was born in 1989. His odd gait and tendency to bellow for his mother earned him the nickname "E.T." Suffering from an immune deficiency and a bad case of colic, he survived surgery that usually ends a horse's racing career. Bloodstock agents dismissed him because of his mediocre breeding, and once he was sold for only $3,000. He'd live in five barns in seven states by the time he turned two. Somehow, this horse became one of the biggest underdogs to appear on the American sporting landscape. Lil E. Tee overcame his bleak beginnings to reach the respected hands of trainer Lynn Whiting, jockey Pat Day, and owner Cal Partee. After winning the Jim Beam stakes and finishing second in the Arkansas Derby, Lil E. Tee arrived at Churchill Downs to face a field of seventeen horses, including the highly acclaimed favorite, Arazi, a horse many people forecast to become the next Secretariat. A 17-to-1 longshot, Lil E. Tee won the Derby with a classic rally down the home stretch, and finally Pat Day had jockeyed a horse to Derby victory. John Eisenberg draws on more than fifteen years of sports writing experience and a hundred interviews throughout Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Florida, and Arkansas to tell the story almost nobody knew in 1992. Eisenberg is a sports columnist for the Baltimore Sun and has won more than twenty awards for his sports writing, including several Associated Press sports editors' first places."

Book excerpt: Short stories and a novella from one of crime fiction's most revered writers. Whether they're cops or conmen, savage killers or creative types, gangsters or God-fearing citizens, George Pelecanos' characters are always engaged in a fight for their lives. They fight to advance or simply to survive; they fight against odds, against enemies, even against themselves. In this, his first collection of stories, the acclaimed novelist introduces readers to a vivid and eclectic cast of combatants. A seasoned claims investigator tracks a supposedly dead man from Miami to Brazil, only to be thrown off his game by a kid from the local slum. An aging loser takes a last stab at respectability by becoming a police informant. A Greek-American couple adopts an interracial trio of sons and then struggles to keep their family together, giving us a stirring bit of background on one of Pelecanos' most beloved protagonists, Spero Lucas. In the title novella - which takes its name from Hollywood slang for the last shot of the day, the one that comes before the liquor shots begin - we go behind the scenes of a television cop show, where a writer gets caught up in a drama more real than anything he could have conjured for a script. By turns heartbreaking and humane, brutal and funny, these finely constructed tales expose the violence and striving beneath the surface of any city and within any human heart. Tough, sexy, fast-paced, and crackling with energy, The Martini Shot is Pelecanos at his very best.

Book Little Miss Sure Shot

  • Author : Jeffrey Marshall
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2014-05-05
  • ISBN : 9781495450600
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book Little Miss Sure Shot written by Jeffrey Marshall and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Miss Sure Shot is a fictionalized account of the life of Annie Oakley, drawing heavily on the real timelines and events of her life. However, the book is not a biography - it invents situations, people she meets, and a myriad of conversations. Moreover, while the book is presented chronologically, apart from the prologue, it skips certain periods and attempts to focus on those that are especially vital, such as the early years Annie spent with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, including the tours through Europe. A special feature of the novel is the framing of Annie's loving marriage to fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler, whom she married at sixteen and remained married to for 50 years until her death. Frank was far more than just her husband - he was her manager (he gave up his own shooting for that role) and her constant companion. The novel closes with an epilogue in Frank's voice, presenting an overview of their lives together and the circumstances of her death in 1926.
