Download or read book E E Cummings Modernism and the Classics written by J. Alison Rosenblitt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a major, ground-breaking study of the modernist E. E. Cummings' engagement with the classics. With his experimental form and syntax, his irreverence, and his rejection of the highbrow, there are probably few current readers who would name Cummings if asked to identify 20th-century Anglophone poets in the Classical tradition. But for most of his life, and even for ten or twenty years after his death, this is how many readers and critics did see Cummings. He specialised in the study of classical literature as an undergraduate at Harvard, and his contemporaries saw him as a 'pagan' poet or a 'Juvenalian' satirist, with an Aristophanic sense of humour. In E.E. Cummings' Modernism and the Classics, Alison Rosenblitt aims to recover for the contemporary reader this lost understanding of Cummings as a classicizing poet. The book also includes an edition of previously unpublished work by Cummings himself, unearthed from archival research. For the first time, the reader has access to the full scope of Cummings' translations from Horace, Homer, and Greek drama, as well as two short pieces of classically-related prose, a short 'Alcaics' and a previously unknown and classicizing parody of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. This new work is exciting in its own right and essential to understanding Cummings' development as a poet.

Book excerpt: One of the youngest survivors of the Warsaw ghetto, author Sahbra Anna Markus lived a life only those who have survived Hitlers hell can imagine. In Only a Bad Dream? she narrates the drama of her early years through her most vivid memories. Sahbra courageously recounts those childhood experiences in her compelling voice, now freed from the repeated warnings: Dont tell anyone youre a Jew. Dont forget youre a Jew. It was only a dream. Hang on tight, or youll get lost and die. She tells of traipsing through forests at night, fleeing certain death, of her parents hiding her in a church, desperate to save her life. A frantic search for surviving family found the Markuses traveling throughout Europe on foot, by rowboat, military train, farm wagon, trucks, and finally the ship Caserta that delivered them to the land of hope, freedom, and new beginningsthe only Jewish homeland, Israel. Only a Bad Dream? shares how, in the midst of hunger and deprivation, Sahbra still found joy in simple things like cats, the moon, wolves, and fireflies. A story of the triumph of the human spirit, this memoir provides strong insight into the courage, strength, and dignity possessed by those who endured the Holocaust.

Book excerpt: Summer has shed its kin by the time October comes to town. Frost is in the air, twilight lingers and the nights loom over the shortened days. Nature displays the dying of the year with a explosion of color. The nights are darker and the stars are clearer. Belief is, that the wall between the worlds is at it's thinnest during this season and on the 31st of October it's even possible to cross over in both directions. We simultaneously hope and dread that we will catch a glimpse of or come in contact with the dead, undead, those who never lived, and the undying. We all love Halloween. Of all nights of the year, Halloween is the one where we hope that the impossible can be made possible and unreal can become real. It's the day where our deepest fears and wishes take on flesh. On Halloween our souls cry out "Scare us! Show us Fear! Makes us BELIEVE!" We wear masks not to hide, for that is an illusion, but to reveal our true selves. It is the one day where we find the courage to laugh at Death.
