Book excerpt: 2022 Distinguished Authors Guild-DAG 2022 PenCraft Book Award 2022 Purple Dragonfly Book Award Honorable Mention Rape is an extremely difficult topic to discuss with young children; however, it is a necessary conversation we must have. This book allows parents, teachers, counselors, administrators and those who work with children to create a responsible and safe space to talk about rape. The "Me Too Movement" is not just about adults but it is a conversation for children too. Statistics have shown that every nine minutes 1 in 9 girls and 1 and 53 boys will be sexually assaulted. We can no longer wait! The time is now to have this conversation. Little Miss Linda, as a rape survivor, learns to use her voice to express thoughts about rape, but not from feeling, out of "shame or guilt." Instead, she develops a letter writing campaign to let other children know that rape is not the victim's fault. Little Miss Linda creates a community outreach program called "STAR" (Survivors Talking About Rape). She encourages other to not sit still but lift up their voices and be silent no more. Join the campaign against rape so we can "STAR" together. Please be advised that this book is best suited for those ages 12+. It contains themes around sexual assault/violence. This book may also provoke psychological distress; thus, ensure that the proper resources and contacts are available should they be necessary. Reader's Favorite Five Star Reviewed By Rylanne Burdette Little Miss Linda Speaks about Rape is a challenging yet powerful read that hit my heart in a way that I wasn't expecting when I first picked it up. Although I have not experienced anything like this, I have several friends who have, and I think that this book, even though it is marketed as a children's book, would really impact them as well. The illustrations alongside the dialogue and plot all worked together to create a story that will stick with me for a long time. I would recommend Little Miss Linda Speaks about Rape by Linda J. M. Holloway to children who are in elementary school, but I also think that parents or other trusted adults should be present when it is read. This book is one that needs to be thought about and talked about during and after reading it. Little Miss Linda Speaks about Rape by Linda J. M. Holloway is a must-read book.
Download or read book I Never Called It Rape written by Robin Warshaw and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of the 1988 classic text that exposed the extreme prevalence of rape in America, coining the term acquaintance rape and establishing the disturbing statistics on sexual assault that still hold just as true today—now featuring an original preface from Gloria Steinem, a new introduction by Salamishah Tillet, an updated afterword by Mary P. Koss, PH.D., as well as an updated resources section. “Essential. . . . It is nonpolemical, lucid, and speaks eloquently not only to the victims of acquaintance rape but to all those caught in its net.”— Philadelphia Inquirer In 1988, Robin Warshaw wrote I Never Called It Rape, the ground-breaking book that revealed a staggering truth: 25% of women were the victims of rape or attempted rape. Over 80% of these women knew their assailants. Warhsaw based her reportage on the first large-scale study into rape ever, conducted by Ms. Magazine in the late 80s. Thirty years later, we now have a wealth of statistics on rape. The disturbing truth is that the figures have not diminished. That our culture enables rape is not just shown by the numbers—the outbreak of allegations against serial rapists from Bill Cosby to Harvey Weinstein and the 2016 presidential election of Donald Trump, a man who was recorded bragging about sexual assault, have further amplified this horrifying truth. With over 80,000 copies sold to date, I Never Called It Rape has served as a guide to understanding rape as a cultural phenomenon for tens of thousands—providing women and men with strategies to address our rape endemic; survivors with the context and resources to help them heal from their experiences; and pulling the wool from all our eyes on the pervasiveness of rape and sexual assault today. As relevant today as when it was first published, this new edition features Warshaw’s original report and her 1994 Introduction, as well as an original Preface from Gloria Steinem, a new Introduction by Salamishah Tillet on how the cultural landscape has evolved since the 1980s, an updated Afterword by Mary P. Koss, PH.D., examining the ways she would approach the research she did for Ms. differently today, as well as an updated resources section.
Download or read book Little Miss Linda Speaks Out about Diversity written by Linda J. M. Holloway and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a society that is extremely diverse, and we must find ways to treat each other with love and respect despite our differences. Little Miss Linda is a dark-skinned girl who has been treated cruelly because of the color of her skin. Her father is in the military, so she has had the privilege of living in various places around the world including Japan, Korea, Philippines, Alaska, and Germany. Often, she and her siblings would be the only African American children in their classes. Little Miss Linda was full of excitement when her father told the family he was retiring and moving to Mississippi. She thought that the mean words about her dark skin would stop. She imagined her family would be surrounded by people who were like her, but to her surprise, she continued to be teased and taunted about the complexion of her skin. This book illustrates how Little Miss Linda was able to turn a negative situation into a positive one. She did this through teaching her class, school, and community the power of appreciating and celebrating people regardless of their skin color. The power and effectiveness of Little Miss Linda's diversity story is made practical by the "Skittles Story." Yes, if only Skittles could talk right? They do in this book! Through this elementary story all children can relate to the simple truth that people are more alike than they are different and diversity is to be celebrated.

Self-Love, Self-Compassion, and African-American Hair Pride "Little Miss Linda" is an African American girl who is caught in between two worlds- the one in her head and the world outside of her mind. She is struggling to accept her hair texture. She overhears comments about her hair from those in her community. The comments are hurtful and describe her hair as "ugly," "uncontrollable," and "unappreciated." Little Miss Linda's mother is extremely instrumental in creating a safe environment, which allows Little Miss Linda to grow to appreciate, celebrate, and cherish her hair. Little Miss Linda's hair journey to accept her hair is contagious and she is able to get those around her to appreciate their hair too. This book is designed to enable young children especially Black children to feel positive and accept their beautiful hair. It promotes positive hair-esteem, self-love, and encourages all children to accept the beautiful texture of their hair and dispel hair bullying. Please join "Little Miss Linda's" global campaign against hair bullying by purchasing this book and signing the pledge!. Dr. Tommie 'Tonea' Stewart wrote, The book of innocence "I Love My Happy Hair" explores and addresses the bias expressed in the American culture. While these negative influences are real and continue to exist, time and self-discovery finds its date and place to consummate the beauty of self-validation and God given protection. In brief, such expressive denial and persecution has occurred and recurred throughout history. Yet, those who are considered with less, in fact, are blessed with more (i.e. Nina Simone, the Singer; The Williams Sisters, Tennis Players; Mae Jemison, the Astronaut; Sojourner Truth, the Activist; Maya Angelo, the Writer; Margaret Walker, the Writer; Harriet Tubman, Black Moses; 2020 Miss Universe; and Miss America). To this end, "I Love My Happy Hair" is another testament for stepping over what seems to be an obstacle onto a positive release for self-love. -Actress.--Former Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts.--Alabama State University . Readers' Favorite Four Star Review by Amy Louise Hill Linda J.M. Holloway has created an engaging and relatable story that children will both love and learn from. It's sad to think that children feel insecure about the way they look, whether it's through bullying or personal feelings. No child should dislike who they are and how they look. I Love My happy Hair is the perfect book to inspire body positivity in children, as I believe it will change the way they see themselves entirely once they read Linda's story. Linda J.M. Holloway should be proud of what she's created and I want to wish her all the best in her writing journey. Keep up the good work!

Download or read book Pure written by Linda Kay Klein and published by Atria Books. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pure, Linda Kay Klein uses a potent combination of journalism, cultural commentary, and memoir to take us “inside religious purity culture as only one who grew up in it can” (Gloria Steinem) and reveals the devastating effects evangelical Christianity’s views on female sexuality has had on a generation of young women. In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls—resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder—and trapped them in a cycle of shame. This is the sex education Linda Kay Klein grew up with. Fearing being marked a Jezebel, Klein broke up with her high school boyfriend because she thought God told her to and took pregnancy tests despite being a virgin, terrified that any sexual activity would be punished with an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. When the youth pastor of her church was convicted of sexual enticement of a twelve-year-old girl, Klein began to question purity-based sexual ethics. She contacted young women she knew, asking if they were coping with the same shame-induced issues she was. These intimate conversations developed into a twelve-year quest that took her across the country and into the lives of women raised in similar religious communities—a journey that facilitated her own healing and led her to churches that are seeking a new way to reconcile sexuality and spirituality. Pure is “a revelation... Part memoir and part journalism, Pure is a horrendous, granular, relentless, emotionally true account" (The Cut) of society’s larger subjugation of women and the role the purity industry played in maintaining it. Offering a prevailing message of resounding hope and encouragement, “Pure emboldens us to escape toxic misogyny and experience a fresh breath of freedom” (Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love Warrior and founder of Together Rising).
