Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Girl Black Confronts Domestic abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, emotional abuse, and verbal abuse. This book and all my Little Girl Black poetry books, volumes 1–6, celebrate and confront dreams, religion, marriage, unfairness, sex, friendship, racism, colorism, abuse, strength, judgments, fantasy, love, education, families, power, death, the black sheep syndrome, and many other situations. Domestic abuse. You know that old saying “You don’t really know what happens behind closed doors”? Everything looks great on the outside, but no one really knows the real deal. And there are entire families living in total fear. Looks can be very deceiving. Most people only show what they want people to see, and it’s usually a façade. Some abuse goes unnoticed, and some abuse screams out loud. Some mothers and fathers tell their kids to shush. “This is family business. Keep what’s going on at home, at home, and what’s going on outside, outside. We’re a family. We don’t mix the two.” Now you and your whole family are bound to secrecy. Physical abuse. Some people are in total denial when they don’t want anyone to notice the makeup that’s covering a black eye or when they give you an excuse for how their arm got broken and it has everything to do with falling down the stairs. But there are some people who wear physical abuse like a crown or tiara and strut like a peacock. He or she wants everybody to know how they keep their woman or man in check. Yes, women can be and are abusers too. Love should not hurt so bad until love stops breathing, and you have to give love and your heart mouth-to-mouth resuscitation every second of your every day. If that’s what you’re on, you may as well go on and buy that black dress or make orange your favorite color. Sooner or later, he or she will snap. Abuse is true life, not a TV show.

Book excerpt: As a follow-up to his bestselling Little Black Girl Lost, Keith Lee Johnson takes us back into the life of Johnnie Wise, a stunning 15-year-old whose beauty is so seductive it sparked a race riot in New Orleans. Now, the riot is over, the National Guard has left, and life can begin to return to normal in the black-owned Sable Parish. For Johnnie, though, there is still some unfinished business. She has made it her mission to get to know the white side of her family, the Beauregards, and takes a job as a maid in their home, watching quietly to learn what really goes on behind the walls of their stately home. What she sees is more than she ever expected. Outside of work, Johnnie is determined to win back the love of her life, Lucas Matthews, but first she must convince him that the night she spent with ruthless crime boss Napoleon Bentley meant nothing to her. To Bentley, however, the night was unforgettable, and he will stop at nothing to have Johnnie to himself. He has set the wheels in motion to take over the New Orleans Mob, with Johnnie by his side as his willing concubine. Keith Lee Johnson weaves an intriguing tale of love, lust, deception, and power, all against the backdrop of a racially troubled 1950’s New Orleans. Johnnie Wise is a young woman readers won’t soon forget.

Book excerpt: A Hulu Original Series Coming Soon “Riveting, fearless, and vividly original” (Emily St. John Mandel, New York Times bestselling author), this instant New York Times bestseller explores the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishing. Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she’s thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust. Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: LEAVE WAGNER. NOW. It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realizes that there’s a lot more at stake than just her career. Having joined Wagner Books to honor the legacy of Burning Heart, a novel written and edited by two Black women, she had thought that this animosity was a relic of the past. Is Nella ready to take on the fight of a new generation? “Poignant, daring, and darkly funny, The Other Black Girl will have you stressed and exhilarated in equal measure through the very last twist” (Vulture). The perfect read for anyone who has ever felt manipulated, threatened, or overlooked in the workplace.

Book Whatever Happened to Daddy s Little Girl

Download or read book Whatever Happened to Daddy s Little Girl written by Jonetta Rose Barras and published by One World. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to a little girl who grows up without a father? Can she ever feel truly loved and fully alive? Does she ever heal—or is she doomed to live a wounded, fragmented life and to pass her wounds down to her own children? Fatherlessness afflicts nearly half the households in America, and it has reached epidemic proportions in the African-American community, with especially devastating consequences for black women. In this powerful, searingly intimate book, accomplished journalist, poet, and fiction writer Jonetta Rose Barras breaks the code of silence and gives voice to the experiences of America's fatherless women—starting with herself. "We are legions—a choir of wounded—listen to the dirge we sing," writes Barras of the millions of black women like her who lost, either through abandonment, rejection, poverty, or death, the men who gave them life. A father is the first man in a girl's life—the first man to look in her eyes, protect her, care for her, love her unconditionally. Fathers fashion their daughters as expertly and as powerfully as they do their sons. When a girl loses this man, she grows up with an ache that nothing else can soothe. Psychologists have found that fatherless daughters are far more likely to suffer from debilitating rage, depression, abuse, and addictions; they tend to seek "sexual healing" through promiscuity or anti-intimate behavior and end up fearing or despising the men whose love they crave. Barras knows from personal experience the traps and the fury of being a black fatherless daughter, and she makes her own life story the heart and soul of her book, alternating chapters of spellbinding memoir with the stories she has gathered from women all over the country. Passionate and shockingly frank, Whatever Happened to Daddy's Little Girl is the first book to explore the plight of America's fatherless daughters from the unique perspective of the African-American community. Like Hope Edelman's New York Times bestseller Motherless Daughters, this brilliant volume gives all fatherless daughters the knowledge that they are not alone and the courage to overcome the hidden pain they have suffered for so long.
