Book excerpt: Little Duke Boy is an inspirational fiction novel based on true life events about a young boy named Clabo. The page-turner recounts Clabo growing up in the projects in Pittsburgh, PA., in a fatherless environment and a mother addicted to heroin. Clabo doesn't allow this dynamic to affect him too deeply. At least he doesn't think so. While most of the people around him are dysfunctional, broke and broken - he has a couple of positive male role models who feeds him wisdom that he will later use when he's of age. While he didn't have a relationship with his earthly father, he forms and nurtures a strong connection with his heavenly Father. But that doesn't come right away. Before Clabo connects with God, he gets connected to the street life at the tender age of 10. By the time Clabo is 16, he's been arrested, sold drugs, gets his girlfriend pregnant, and becomes feared among his neighborhood peers. Clabo lives a fast life that is all too real to young Black boys in the hood. Surrounded by violence, drugs, dirty money, robbery, women, a near-death experience - and even murder for hire charges, Clabo eventually decides this lifestyle isn't for him and wants to change. But does he? Little Duke Boy chronicles a jaw-dropping, adrenaline rushing, heart-wrenching experience that makes you want to save this hot-head, yet it's laced with a measure of faith that will tug the hearts of even the most hardcore souls reading this story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Charlotte M. Yonge's 'The Little Duke: Richard the Fearless,' readers are transported back to medieval Normandy, where they follow the young Duke Richard as he navigates the challenges of ruling a territory while still a child. The book is written in a clear and captivating style, making it accessible to both young adult and adult readers. Yonge's detailed descriptions of the political intrigues and battles of the time add depth to the narrative, giving readers a realistic sense of the historical context of the story. Charlotte M. Yonge, a prolific 19th-century author, drew inspiration for 'The Little Duke' from her love of history and her interest in medieval European royalty. As a respected educator and novelist, Yonge's work often focused on moral and religious themes, appealing to readers looking for both entertainment and substance in their literature. I highly recommend 'The Little Duke: Richard the Fearless' to readers who enjoy historical fiction, especially those interested in medieval history and the lives of young rulers. Yonge's engaging storytelling and attention to historical detail make this book a compelling and informative read for anyone looking to delve into the world of medieval politics and power.

Book excerpt: From the famed publisher and poet, author of the million-copy-selling collection A Coney Island of the Mind, his literary last will and testament -- part autobiography, part summing up, part Beat-inflected torrent of language and feeling, and all magical. "A volcanic explosion of personal memories, political rants, social commentary, environmental jeremiads and cultural analysis all tangled together in one breathless sentence that would make James Joyce proud. . ." —Ron Charles, The Washington Post In this unapologetically unclassifiable work Lawrence Ferlinghetti lets loose an exhilarating rush of language to craft what might be termed a closing statement about his highly significant and productive 99 years on this planet. The "Little Boy" of the title is Ferlinghetti himself as a child, shuffled from his overburdened mother to his French aunt to foster childhood with a rich Bronxville family. Service in World War Two (including the D-Day landing), graduate work, and a scholar gypsy's vagabond life in Paris followed. These biographical reminiscences are interweaved with Allen Ginsberg-esque high energy bursts of raw emotion, rumination, reflection, reminiscence and prognostication on what we may face as a species on Planet Earth in the future. Little Boy is a magical font of literary lore with allusions galore, a final repository of hard-earned and durable wisdom, a compositional high wire act without a net (or all that much punctuation) and just a gas and an inspiration to read.

Book excerpt: The gulf stream flows so near to the southern coast of Norway, and to the Orkneys and Western Islands, that their climate is much less severe than might be supposed. Yet no one can help wondering why they were formerly so much more populous than now, and why the people who came westward even so long ago as the great Aryan migration, did not persist in turning aside to the more fertile countries that lay farther southward. In spite of all their disadvantages, the Scandinavian peninsula, and the sterile islands of the northern seas, were inhabited by men and women whose enterprise and intelligence ranked them above their neighbors. Now, with the modern ease of travel and transportation, these poorer countries can be supplied from other parts of the world. And though the summers of Norway are misty and dark and short, and it is difficult to raise even a little hay on the bits of meadow among the rocky mountain slopes, commerce can make up for all deficiencies. In early times there was no commerce except that carried on by the pirates—if we may dignify their undertakings by such a respectable name,—and it was hardly possible to make a living from the soil alone. The sand dunes of Denmark and the cliffs of Norway alike gave little encouragement to tillers of the ground, yet, in defiance of all our ideas of successful colonization, when the people of these countries left them, it was at first only to form new settlements in such places as Iceland, or the Faroë or Orkney islands and stormiest Hebrides.
