The story of William Dorrit, imprisoned for debt in Marshalsea Prison, and his daughter and helpmate, Amy, or Little Dorrit, the novel charts the progress of the Dorrit family from poverty to riches. In his Introduction, David Gates argues that "intensity of imagination is the gift from which Dickens's other great attributes derive: his eye and ear, his near-universal empathy, his ability to entertain both a sense of the ridiculous and a sense of ultimate significance."

Book excerpt: Little Dorrit illustrated Charles Dickens - Originally published as a serial from 1855 to 1857, Dickens's novel Little Dorrit tells the story of Amy Dorrit, the youngest child of her family born and raised in a debtors prison whose life is changed when she meets Arthur Clennam, returning home from a 20-year absence. Little Dorrit heavily criticises societal shortcomings of the time, in particular the existence of debtors prisonswhere Dickens's own father was incarcerated. This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with an introductory chapter from Appreciations and Criticisms of the Works of Charles Dickens by G. K. Chesterton.Charles John Huffam Dickens (18121870) was an English writer and social critic famous for having created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters. His works became unprecedentedly popular during his life, and today he is commonly regarded as the greatest Victorian-era novelist. Although perhaps better known for such works as Oliver Twist or A Christmas Carol, Dickens first gained success with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers, which turned him almost overnight into an international literary celebrity thanks to his humour, satire, and astute observations concerning society and character.

She was born in the Marshalsea debtors’ prison and has lived there with her family for all of her twenty-two years, only leaving during the day to work as a seamstress for the forbidding Mrs. Clennam. But Amy’s fortunes are about to change: the arrival of Mrs. Clennam’s son Arthur, back from working in China, heralds the beginning of stunning revelations not just about Amy but also about Arthur himself. Of the complex, richly rewarding masterworks he wrote in the last decade of his life, Little Dorrit is the book in which Charles Dickens most fully unleashed his indignation at the fallen state of mid-Victorian society. Crammed with persons and incidents in whose recreation nothing is accidental or spurious, containing, in its picture of the Circumlocution Office, the most witheringly exact satire of a bureaucracy we possess, Little Dorrit is a stunning example of how thoroughly Dickens could put his flair for the theatrical and his comic genius the service of his passion for justice. The novel attacks the injustices of the contemporary English legal system, particularly the institution of debtors' prison. Amy Dorrit, referred to as Little Dorrit, is born in and lives much of her life at the Marshalsea prison, where her father is imprisoned for debt. She and her siblings earn meager wages at jobs outside the prison walls, returning nightly to Marshalsea. Little Dorrit works as a seamstress for Mrs. Clennam, whose son Arthur takes an interest in the Dorrit family and eventually helps free Mr. Dorrit from prison. Arthur becomes a debtor himself and falls in love with Little Dorrit, but because their financial circumstances are now reversed, he does not ask her to marry him. In the end, Arthur&rsquo's mother, a miserly, mean-spirited woman, is forced to reveal that Arthur is not really her son and that she had been keeping money from him and the Dorrit's for many years. This circumstance leaves Little Dorrit and Arthur free to marry.

Book excerpt: One of Charles Dickens' most personally resonant novels, Little Dorrit speaks across the centuries to the modern reader. Its depiction of shady financiers and banking collapses seems uncannily topical, as does Dickens' compassionate admiration for Amy Dorrit, the "child of the Marshalsea," as she struggles to hold her family together in the face of neglect, irresponsibility, and ruin. Intricate in its plotting, the novel also satirizes the cumbersome machinery of government. For Dickens, Little Dorrit marked a return to some of the most harrowing scenes of his childhood, with its graphic depiction of the trauma of the debtors' prison and its portrait of a world ignored by society. The novel not only explores the literal prison, but also the figurative jails that characters build for themselves.
