Book Little Did I Know

Download or read book Little Did I Know written by Stanley Cavell and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An autobiography in the form of a philosophical diary, Little Did I Know's underlying motive is to describe the events of a life that produced the kind of writing associated with Stanley Cavell's name. Cavell recounts his journey from early childhood in Atlanta, Georgia, through musical studies at UC Berkeley and Julliard, his subsequent veering off into philosophy at UCLA, his Ph.D. studies at Harvard, and his half century of teaching. Influential people from various fields figure prominently or in passing over the course of this memoir. J.L. Austin, Ernest Bloch, Roger Sessions, Thomas Kuhn, Robert Lowell, Rogers Albritton, Seymour Shifrin, John Rawls, Bernard Williams, W. V. O. Quine, and Jacques Derrida are no longer with us; but Cavell also pays homage to the living: Michael Fried, John Harbison, Rose Mary Harbison, Kurt Fischer, Milton Babbitt, Thompson Clarke, John Hollander, Hilary Putnam, Sandra Laugier, Belle Randall, and Terrence Malick. The drift of his narrative also registers the decisiveness of the relatively unknown and the purely accidental. Cavell's life has produced a trail of some eighteen published books that range from treatments of individual writers like Wittgenstein, Austin, Emerson, Thoreau, Heidegger, Shakespeare, and Beckett to studies in aesthetics, epistemology, moral and political philosophy, cinema, opera, and religion.

Book excerpt: Here is the story of an unforgettable summer. Set in Plymouth, MA in the late seventies, LITTLE DID I KNOW is the tale of a young man with an outsized dream to refurbish a dilapidated but historic theater and produce a season's worth of vibrant musicals. A recent college graduate, he fills his cast and crew with people he has come to love and trust in his university life, and with others whose talents and personalities prove undeniable. Yet, while the productions drive his ambitions, a local woman drives his passions, and their romance is fateful, star-crossed, and ultimately more than either of them expected. Told with wit, compassion, and the kind of insider's access to the theater that only someone like Mitchell Maxwell can provide, LITTLE DID I KNOW is a novel about coming of age in the spotlight and embracing one's entire future in a single season."

Book Little Did We Know

Download or read book Little Did We Know written by John R. Miller and published by Arbordale LLC. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Did We Know tells the remarkable story of the Trans Alaska Pipeline through the eyes of John Miller, who shouldered responsibility for financing Sohio’s portion of the Alaskan venture that transformed the company from a small, regional oil refiner and marketer into the fifteenth largest US industrial corporation. TAPS, as the pipeline is known, carries crude oil 800 miles from the Prudhoe Bay field on the North Slope of Alaska to the ice-free port of Valdez on the state’s southern coast. Building the pipeline—one of the largest private industrial projects ever undertaken—was an incredible feat of engineering, and for Sohio, of financing. This is a saga about an engineer with no formal training in finance surmounting an onslaught of financial challenges, raising more than $6 billion over a decade—something many thought was well beyond Sohio’s capabilities.

But not even his closest associates, let alone fans of his horror films and comedy plays, could have predicted the extraordinary turn his career took during the final years of the 20th century.McG hosted London's wildest parties at his home in the sleazy King's Cross district. They were attended by some of the biggest names of stage, screen, music and fashion. The revelations of what went on under the figurative noses of law enforcement agencies and the literal noses of McG and his high-flying guests are not for the faint-hearted.In this sensational memoir, illustrated with many previously unseen photos, McGillivray journeys six decades, taking us through the cocaine-lined world of London's media industry, the tragic heights of the AIDS epidemic and the sinful celluloid backstreets of Soho. It's a colourful picaresque account of the capital from every angle. The confessions of this outrageously funny man may amaze and amuse, scandalise or shock you. And you may never look back on Millennium Night in quite the same light again... Little Did You Know is disgraceful, indefensible... and utterly unforgettable.

Book Drinking with Men

Download or read book Drinking with Men written by Rosie Schaap and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NPR “Best Books of 2013” BookPage Best Books of 2013 Library Journal Best Books of 2013: Memoir Flavorwire 10 Best Nonfiction Books of 2013 A vivid, funny, and poignant memoir that celebrates the distinct lure of the camaraderie and community one finds drinking in bars. Rosie Schaap has always loved bars: the wood and brass and jukeboxes, the knowing bartenders, and especially the sometimes surprising but always comforting company of regulars. Starting with her misspent youth in the bar car of a regional railroad, where at fifteen she told commuters’ fortunes in exchange for beer, and continuing today as she slings cocktails at a neighborhood joint in Brooklyn, Schaap has learned her way around both sides of a bar and come to realize how powerful the fellowship among regular patrons can be. In Drinking with Men, Schaap shares her unending quest for the perfect local haunt, which takes her from a dive outside Los Angeles to a Dublin pub full of poets, and from small-town New England taverns to a character-filled bar in Manhattan’s TriBeCa. Drinking alongside artists and expats, ironworkers and soccer fanatics, she finds these places offer a safe haven, a respite, and a place to feel most like herself. In rich, colorful prose, Schaap brings to life these seedy, warm, and wonderful rooms. Drinking with Men is a love letter to the bars, pubs, and taverns that have been Schaap’s refuge, and a celebration of the uniquely civilizing source of community that is bar culture at its best.

Book Ask Me His Name

Book excerpt: The Sunday Times Bestseller 'A beautiful book' Giovanna Fletcher 'Will stay with you long after you have put it down' Jools Oliver 'Bold, compelling... will blow you away' Marina Fogle 'Heartbreaking... such an important read' Sarah Turner (The Unmumsy Mum) *********************************************** What do you do when the unthinkable happens? Elle Wright had an admittedly easy pregnancy, and in May 2016 she and her husband welcomed their son, Teddy, into the world. Just a few hours later, they woke to find him cold and unresponsive, and the happiest day of Elle's life had turned into every parent's worst nightmare. Three days after delivering him into the world, she sat with Teddy as he took his last breaths, and tucked him in for the final time. Ask Me His Name is a moving account of Elle's pregnancy, Teddy's life, and what happens when a mother leaves hospital with empty arms. In the UK, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss, but conversations about the heartbreakingly frequent experience are few and far between. In this honest and hopeful exploration of mothering, Elle shows us how she navigated a parenthood no one had prepared her for. * A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Tommy's charity.
