Download or read book Varieties Of Social Explanation written by Daniel Little and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Little presents an introduction to the philosophy of social science with an emphasis on the central forms of explanation in social science: rational-intentional, causal, functional, structural, materialist, statistical and interpretive. The book is very strong on recent developments, particularly in its treatment of rational choice theory, microfoundations for social explanation, the idea of supervenience, functionalism, and current discussions of relativism.Of special interest is Professor Little's insight that, like the philosophy of natural science, the philosophy of social science can profit from examining actual scientific examples. Throughout the book, philosophical theory is integrated with recent empirical work on both agrarian and industrial society drawn from political science, sociology, geography, anthropology, and economics.Clearly written and well structured, this text provides the logical and conceptual tools necessary for dealing with the debates at the cutting edge of contemporary philosophy of social science. It will prove indispensible for philosophers, social scientists and their students.

Download or read book The Little Typer written by Daniel P. Friedman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to dependent types, demonstrating the most beautiful aspects, one step at a time. A program's type describes its behavior. Dependent types are a first-class part of a language, and are much more powerful than other kinds of types; using just one language for types and programs allows program descriptions to be as powerful as the programs they describe. The Little Typer explains dependent types, beginning with a very small language that looks very much like Scheme and extending it to cover both programming with dependent types and using dependent types for mathematical reasoning. Readers should be familiar with the basics of a Lisp-like programming language, as presented in the first four chapters of The Little Schemer. The first five chapters of The Little Typer provide the needed tools to understand dependent types; the remaining chapters use these tools to build a bridge between mathematics and programming. Readers will learn that tools they know from programming—pairs, lists, functions, and recursion—can also capture patterns of reasoning. The Little Typer does not attempt to teach either practical programming skills or a fully rigorous approach to types. Instead, it demonstrates the most beautiful aspects as simply as possible, one step at a time.

Rather than simply focusing on "how to get the work done", this concise resource focuses on Maintenance Excellence and meeting its objectives more effectively and more efficiently. Uniquely designed for busy people who want and need to learn more about maintenance excellence but have a limited amount of time to do so, each chapter is designed to provide a stand-alone learning opportunity for individuals who have an opportunity to pick the book up over lunch or whenever the opportunity arises. Additionally, it emphasizes the part that effective and efficient maintenance plays in achieving good reliability so it provides an excellent companion for The Little Black Book of Reliability Management which was designed to be used in the same manner. This set of books is intended to provide the young professionals working in this area with a quick introduction to all the subjects they will need to learn. It is also intended for more senior managers and executives who are not experts in either maintenance or reliability, but need to be conversant with its elements.

Download or read book Reframing the Social written by Professor Poe Yu-ze Wan and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing extensively on the research findings of natural and social sciences both in America and Europe, Reframing the Social argues for a critical realist and systemist social ontology, designed to shed light on current debates in social theory concerning the relationship of social ontology to practical social research, and the nature of 'the social'. It explores the works of the systems theorist Mario Bunge in comparison with the approach of Niklas Luhmann and critical social systems theorists, to challenge the commonly held view that the systems-based approach is holistic in nature and necessarily downplays the role of human agency. Theoretically sophisticated and investigating the work of a theorist whose work has until now received insufficient attention in Anglo-American thought, this book will be of interest to those working in the field of social theory, as well as scholars concerned with philosophy of social science, the project of analytical sociology, and the nature of the relationship between the natural and social sciences.

Download or read book From Death to Life Through Forgiveness written by Evelyne Mukasonga and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyne Mukasonga’s memoir is a story of survival and forgiveness. The book describes the author’s happy childhood in Gisenyi, in the home of her parents who were successful business owners and devout Christians. The mixed ethnic background of Evelyne’s parents - her father was Hutu and her mother Tutsi – became a reason for her persecution. The book quickly evolves to a harrowing account of the author’s narrow escapes during the months of slaughter in 1994. The author survives hiding at family friends’ houses, disguising herself to escape certain death and even facing an angry mob of murderers with equanimity. The book does not end there, however, but follows Evelyne to her refuge in Goma, DRC, where she meets her husband and has her first son. What starts as a safe haven for Evelyne quickly turns into another nightmare when the DRC turns into the site of “the first African World War.” Evelyne and her family get caught up in the struggle between President Laurent Kabila’s forces, and rebel militia aiming at ousting the president. As Rwanda supports the Congolese rebels and she is perceived as Rwandese Tutsi, her life and that of her son are again in danger. She has to flee again within Zaire, hiding, starving, overcoming disease and suffering imprisonment in a man’s detention facility with her one-year-old son. Rescued by the UN and resettled in the USA, Evelyne and her husband become peace builders and community activists.
