Book One Hundred One Beautiful Small Towns in Italy

Download or read book One Hundred One Beautiful Small Towns in Italy written by Paolo Lazzarin and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect guide for those who can't resist succumbing to Italy's charms again and again, now in a popular pocket-sized format. Who hasn't dreamt of being whisked away to a sweet little Italian town buried deep in the countryside? The small towns sprinkled throughout this expansive book are not only rich with beauty but also saturated with as much historical and cultural importance as their sister cities. The fact that they are "off the beaten path"-though sometimes extraordinarily famous for their art, food, and wine, or simply their setting-makes them rare gems even more desirable to see. The 101 towns featured represent the twenty diverse regions of Italy and their varied landscapes, architecture, and local specialties. Practical sidebars introduce the reader to traditional artisans as well as to the best place to buy Parmigiano Reggiano or the greatest terrace to take in a Tuscan sunset. Art and architecture are also amply covered, from the history of L'Aquila's ninety-nine fountains to the most elaborate of baroque churches. You will be amazed to see how much Italy has to offer beyond the well-trod paths of Venice, Florence, and Rome: from Asolo to Vicenza, flea markets to fish markets, horse races to open-air concerts, this book promises 101 great reasons to go back to Italy over and over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Cities of Italy Celt from Oxford and the Hill of Saint Genevieve, and a very plain person, of mixed British extraction, found themselves one pleasant day on the highway of Monsieur Maurel's "artistic and sociological journey in Italy." Here in still vigorous Tuscany, and over there in languid Venezia, thanks to his Little Cities of Italy, we began to observe with more sympathy and intelligence than ever before the life, the beauty, the mysticism of this enchanting country, and, above all, her centuries-long struggle for self-government, the love of which we, too, cherish before all other loves as the foundation and inspiration of every form of greatness. In Florence, we have counted the jewels in the girdle of Venus, and, in Venice, we have enumerated the precious stones of Aphrodite. We have stood in the "great, venerable hall" of San Gimignano, where Dante "took the word." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often separated from other immigrants because of their language, Italian immigrants to New York City in the 1880s formed communities apart from their new neighbors. They tended to think of themselves collectively as a small Italian colony, La Colonia, that made up part of the demographics of the city. In each of the five boroughs, Italians set up many colonie. Several of them dotted Manhattan in East Harlem, the West Village, what is now SoHo, and the downtown area of the Lower East Side, straddling Canal Street, which still identifies Manhattan's Little Italy, the best-known Italian neighborhood in America. Little Italy is made up of stunning photographs culled from numerous private and public collections. It begins with the first phase of immigrants to Lower Manhattan in the early 1800s, including political and religious refugees such as Lorenzo Da Ponte and Giuseppe Garibaldi. In the 1870s, more and more Italian immigrants settled in Little Italy. As the neighborhood grew up around the former Anthony and Orange Streets, New York's first "Little Italy" emerged. The tumultuous history of the Five Points area, the "Bloody Ole Sixth Ward," and many faces and memories from the Italian newspapers L'Eco d'Italia and Il Progresso Italo-Americano are also included in this long-awaited pictorial history.
